Wilderness Damaraland Camp
The Huab River Valley lies in one of the best wilderness areas in Namibia, offering endless vistas of plains, valleys and mountains. Damaraland Camp is run in partnership with the Torra Conservancy and visits to the local farmstead reveal the fruits of this very positive relationship.
Each of the ten spacious en-suite, adobe-style thatched accommodations (including a family unit) has a large private viewing deck. New technology and ancient knowledge makes for an ultra-light footprint; nature drives and guided walks offer sights of desert-adapted wildlife, ancient rock-art and striking geological formations. Astonishing night skies round out each day’s experiences.

Our Purpose at Damaraland Camp
Wilderness Safaris and the Torra community in Damaraland have formed a successful partnership, with the community acting as landlord. This resulted in the 352 000-hectare (869 000-acre) Torra Conservancy being proclaimed – the first community conservancy in Namibia. Desert-adapted wildlife is flourishing again and poaching has decreased substantially.
Community Partnership: Torra Conservancy
In 1996 Wilderness Safaris and the Torra community in Damaraland formed a successful partnership, with the community acting as landlord. The partnership resulted in a 352 000-hectare (869 000-acre) conservancy being proclaimed where desert-adapted wildlife is flourishing again and poaching, once rife, has decreased substantially.
Going Green at Damaraland Camp
This camp is powered by a hybrid system, combining a diesel-powered generator that charges a bank of batteries, which in turn supplies part of the camp with electricity through an inverter. Thanks to this, the generator only needs to operate for eight hours a day. In addition, each guest tent has its own small solar panel and inverter as a solar-powered geyser to provide hot water. Waste water is treated in a Trickle Plant, ensuring that the water is clean before being allowed to enter the natural environment. In order to reduce our use of bottled water, reverse osmosis filtration is done on site to provide guests with high-quality drinking water. Like all Wilderness camps, Damaraland Camp is managed and monitored against very strict in-house environmental standards, so only approved eco-friendly detergents and chemicals are used.
Pack for a Purpose - Damaraland Camp
Wilderness Safaris has partnered with Pack for a Purpose, a non-profit organisation that provides travellers with up-to-date information about required supplies for community-based projects. Guests who would like to bring along a contribution can view the needs list for Damaraland Camp’s community projects on the Pack for a Purpose website.
