Passear de barco nas águas profundas e permanentes do Delta do Okavango é, sem dúvida, uma das experiências de safári mais memoráveis que se pode ter. Embarcamos em nossos barcos e deslizamos por canais estreitos com juncos, onde a expectativa aumenta a cada momento que passa. De repente, os canais se abrem, revelando a majestosa Lagoa Xakanaxa — uma das maiores e mais deslumbrantes lagoas de todo o Delta do Okavango.

Indo para o norte, a paisagem se desdobra em um esplendor silencioso. Os reflexos espelhados de papiros e nuvens dançam na superfície da água, pontuados pelo toque suave do barco e pelo canto ocasional de uma águia-pescadora africana. Os nenúfares flutuam delicadamente ao longo de nosso caminho, e pequenas ilhas com palmeiras parecem miragens — geralmente abrigando lechwe vermelho, elefantes voadores, hipopótamos chafurdando em águas rasas e ocasionalmente crocodilos se aquecendo nas margens.

Situado ao longo do sazonal Rio Gomoti, no extremo sul do Delta do Okavango, o chalé é cercado por um mosaico de habitats — de zonas úmidas sazonais e lagoas pontilhadas de lírios a densas florestas ribeirinhas e bosques abertos — cada um oferecendo um refúgio para uma variedade notável de pássaros. No acampamento, as primeiras manhãs são repletas de sons melódicos de bate-papos com sobrancelhas brancas e tambores de pica-paus, enquanto os papa-moscas do paraíso africano voam pelas árvores e os martins-pescadores malaquita se empoleiram à beira da água.
