Andare in barca nelle acque profonde e permanenti del Delta dell'Okavango è senza dubbio una delle esperienze di safari più memorabili che si possano fare. Saliamo a bordo delle nostre barche e scivoliamo attraverso stretti canali fiancheggiati da canneti, dove l'attesa cresce ad ogni momento che passa. All'improvviso, i corsi d'acqua si aprono, rivelando la maestosa laguna di Xakanaxa, una delle lagune più grandi e mozzafiato dell'intero Delta dell'Okavango.

Dirigendosi verso nord, il paesaggio si apre in un tranquillo splendore. I riflessi specchiati del papiro e delle nuvole danzano sulla superficie dell'acqua, scanditi dal leggero rumore della barca e dal richiamo occasionale di un'aquila pescatrice africana. Le ninfee galleggiano delicatamente lungo il nostro percorso e le piccole isole orlate di palme sembrano miraggi: spesso ospitano lechwe rosse, elefanti che brucano, ippopotami che sguazzano nelle secche e occasionalmente coccodrilli che si crogiolano sulle rive.

L'avifauna abbonda qui: i martin pescatori sfrecciano tra le canne, aironi e cicogne pattugliano i bordi e le jacana attraversano con leggerezza le ninfee. È uno scenario di serenità e pura bellezza naturale, un'esperienza che risveglia l'anima e rimane nella memoria molto tempo dopo la fine del viaggio.

Fare birdwatching al Gomoti Villas è un'esperienza molto gratificante, sia all'interno del parco del lodge che durante i safari guidati da esperti. Situato lungo il fiume stagionale Gomoti, nella parte meridionale del delta dell'Okavango, il lodge è circondato da un mosaico di habitat, dalle zone umide stagionali e dalle lagune punteggiate di gigli alle fitte foreste fluviali e ai boschi aperti, ognuno dei quali offre un rifugio per una notevole varietà di uccelli. In campeggio, le prime mattine sono piene dei richiami melodici dei pettirossi dalle sopracciglia bianche e del tamburo dei picchi, mentre i pigliamosche del paradiso africano svolazzano tra gli alberi e i martin pescatori in malachite si appollaiano in riva al mare. La diversità delle specie osservabili senza nemmeno lasciare il campo è sbalorditiva, il che lo rende un santuario per gli amanti del birdwatching.
