A rare journey into Zambia’s wild western frontier

This is a safari for travellers who already know Liuwa is worth the effort.

Liuwa Plain is one of Zambia’s most remote and unusual wildlife areas: a vast open grassland in the far west of the country, shaped by seasonal water, big skies, traditional Lozi use, and a wildlife story quite different from Zambia’s better-known safari regions.

Rather than rushing straight in and out, this journey has been planned to make sense of the distance. We begin in Lusaka, travel through Kafue National Park, continue west across the Barotse Floodplains and the Zambezi River to Mongu, and then head into Liuwa Plain for a mobile safari in one of Africa’s least conventional and most rewarding wilderness areas.

The safari then returns through Kafue, finishing with time at Kaingu, a lovely place to relax and be well looked after after the mobile camping and long road journeys.

This is not a standard lodge-to-lodge safari. It is a more exploratory journey, with some long travel days, mobile camping, changing landscapes, and the chance to experience parts of Zambia that relatively few visitors reach. For the right guests, that is exactly the appeal.

Expect wide open country, excellent birdlife, Liuwa’s distinctive plains wildlife, the possibility of hyena, wild dog and lion, and the feeling of travelling properly through western Zambia rather than simply flying over it.
