Bordering the Luangwa River, the North and South Luangwa National Parks contain some of the most breathtaking and untouched wilderness in Africa. As a result of this and the parks’ successful anti-poaching campaigns, the area has developed into a world-renowned wildlife haven. The South Luangwa National Park is famous for it's walking safaris, which allow visitors to view elephant, hippo and even lion close-up under the supervision of professional and knowledgeable armed guides.
The area is one of the best in the world to see leopard, who favour the areas around the lagoons and woodlands on the river floodplain. Hippo, crocodile and over 400 species of birds are found along the waterways. Plentiful elephant roam the valley while large herds of buffalo are frequently seen. Unique species such as Thornicroft's giraffe and Cookson's wildebeest are also found in the valley. A major highlight are the healthy populations of wild dog.
