Day 3 - 5

El Impenetrable National Park

Day notes

This morning you drive towards the remote northwestern border of El Impenetrable National Park, located on the banks of the Bermejo River—8 8-hour drive in total.

You will stop after 5 hours for lunch and a rest.  Then you will get into a 4x4 for the last 3 hours of the drive to Los Palmares.  It's a bit bumpy but the car is comfortable and you can have a rest stop en route and stretch your legs.

This area is a sanctuary for the gallery forest ecosystem, the beautiful palm groves of Caranday, and the Chaco Seco Mountain. The Impenetrable is a remarkable and untamed region, filled with natural wonders.

"Rewilding Argentina," a project by Tompkins Conservation, collaborates with the authorities within El Impenetrable National Park. Los Palamares, our home for the next three nights, has fixed tents raised on platforms. Each tent has a wooden deck that offers an incredible view of the river and the surrounding lush vegetation.

You will set out each day in this less-explored terrain on foot, by kayak, boat, and horseback to uncover the elusive wildlife that calls this region home.  There is a wide range of unique and notable wildlife species, including the Giant Armadillo, Tapir, Giant Anteater, Puma, Chacoan Peccary, Maned Wolf, Seriema, Black-bodied Woodpecker, and Chaco Owl.

Expert tips:

This is a very new National Park and therefore animals are shy but it's a rare and wonderful privilege to find yourself in a park in its infancy and to be one of the very few people who will make this journey to somewhere so remote.

Endemic species include the Pink Fairy Armadillo, Chacoan Mara, Chacoan Peccary, Quebracho Crested Tinamou, and even a tree species, the Argentine lignum vitae.

Mammals:  There are good chances of seeing Tapir, Peccary and  Brocket Deer.  Maned Wolf, Puma and Armadillo are rare to see, other than their tracks.

Birds: Over 300 species of birds are present including the Crowned Eagle, Jabiru, Blue-fronted Amazon, Black-bodied Woodpecker, Chaco Chachalaca, Skimmer and Rufous-fronted Thornbird.

Day 6

Day 7 - 9

Ibera Wetlands

Day notes

Following breakfast, we will drive to Casa de Esteros at the Ibera Wetlands.

The Casa de Esteros lodge is located in Colonia Carlos Pellegrini in a six-hectare farm on the coast of the estuary and the Iberá Lagoon.

The house has a living room with a library, grounds and gardens over the lagoon and a swimming pool.  Rooms are comfortable, spacious and bright, decorated in the local style of a refined rural home, but with the comforts and service of a hotel. The gardens allow you to enjoy stunning sunsets and sunrises over the estuary.

Activities include:

Boat safari through different sectors of the Iberá Lagoon, visiting areas of reservoirs, forests and grasslands where wildlife viewing is excellent: caiman, capybaras, swamp deer, river otters and birds of various species.

Visit to the “Agua Brillante” Interpretation Center, located at the southern access to Pellegrini,  helps to understand the natural and cultural legacy of the Iberá Reserve. From there 3 trails are available to walk.

Combined car and trail hiking.  The night safari travels by vehicle along route 40 from the inn to the south, arriving at Lobo Cuá, where we walk into a small lapacho mountain, reaching the edge of the Iberá Lagoon. We accompany the route with reflectors that allow us to find and observe nocturnal fauna: foxes, skunks, corzuelas (Red Brocket), vizcachas (rare rodents of two genera in the family Chinchillidae), among others.

Paddling in the Ibera Lagoon allows you direct contact with the biodiversity of the estuaries. The outings are accompanied by guides qualified for this activity

Horseback ride through the sandy streets of the Colony reaching the coast of the estuary. It is ideal for those who have little experience of horseriding

Guided tour by “the women of the Colony”  to learn about the history, customs and traditions of the Carlos Pellegrini Colony.

Northeast Argentina

Day notes

We stop for the night at Momora, located 2 kilometres from the historic town of Santa Ana, Misiones.

This is a fantastic place, tucked away in woodlands.  The main building is a restored old tannery that processed leathers through vegetable tanning many years ago.  Be prepared for a huge open space filled with art and objects, relaxing seating and a restaurant.  The wine cellar is magnificent and the owner is a real wine aficionado, the food is locally sourced and superbly cooked.

Accommodation consists of domes made of a wooden structure covered with insulated panels. Each dome has large windows and ceilings and a private deck and is strategically located in the jungle so that we are immersed in the natural surroundings.

Guatambu (Balfourodendron riedelianum): A hardwood tree species used for furniture and construction.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis): A native plant species whose leaves are used to prepare the popular South American drink mate.
