Makakatana | iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Set inside the UNESCO-listed iSimangaliso Wetland Park on Lake St Lucia (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), Makakatana is a family-run lodge welcoming guests for over 25 years. From one easy base, days move at the park’s natural pace—calm, guided, and water-threaded—linking estuary, bush, and ocean without the rush. Guided experiences include sunrise and sunset solar-powered eco-boat safaris; a full-day beach trip crossing Lake St Lucia to the Indian Ocean; a full-day boat trip on our private concession; and morning, afternoon and evening game drives on the Western Shores. On Lake St Lucia, eight suites tucked into dune forest keep you close to still water and birdsong; the lodge blends quietly into its setting with thoughtful hosting, clear guiding and generous, unpretentious cuisine. Birders will find a remarkable stronghold, with 500+ species recorded in the greater park. Ideal for couples, small families and photographers seeking presence over pace.

Three Tree Hill Lodge specializes in the history of the South African War, (2nd Anglo-Boer War 1899 – 1902) with the Battle of Spioenkop being our focal point. One cannot however hope to understand this watershed event without studying what caused one of the smallest countries in the world to declare war on the world’s greatest empire of the time. Our guides will bring this dramatic period of our history to life, presenting world class, holistic, evocative and insightful tours.
1.Battle of Spioenkop – Three Trees Flagship Tour – half-day(4hours) This tour tells of the bloodiest single day of the entire South African War. During January, General Sir Redvers Buller was joined by Lt General Sir Charles Warren, but their renewed attempts to breach the Boer defense line along the Thukela River were unsuccessful. Spioenkop was the highest point on the Boer defensive line and on 23 January 1900, a British attempt to capture it began. Astonishingly, Louis Botha, Winston Churchill and Mohandas Ghandi all played a role in this battle. The result of this battle confirmed that those early disasters of ‘Black Week’ were not merely beginners luck on the part of the Boers. Spioenkop, together with Majuba, are arguably the best known of all the battles between the British and the
Boers.
2. Battle of Colenso & Churchill’s Capture – half day (4 hours) The Boers, in response to the anticipated arrival of thousands of British troops in Durban, took up defensive positions along the Thukela River near Colenso. In mid-December a British force of over 15,000 men, under Sir Redvers Buller, suffered a humiliating defeat in attempting to break through to Ladysmith. In this battle 7 Victoria Crosses were won, contributing to two of only three father & son VCs ever to be awarded. Young Winston was contracted by the Morning Post to cover the war in South Africa. However, his capture near Frere and subsequent remarkable escape, thrust him into the political and public limelight, and arguably launched his political career. Less than a year later, aged 25, he became a MP for Oldham.
3. Ladysmith Siege, Battle of Caesar’s Camp & Wagon Point – half day (4 hours)
The siege of Ladysmith lasted 118 days from 02 November 1899 until 28 February 1900. The town was the northern post of the British garrison in Natal, chosen for its strategic position on the Klip River and the junction of the railway lines from Durban to both the Free State and Johannesburg, providing communications between the harbour and the interior.
4. Three Tree Hill Artillery Trail – 2 hours by foot – Also suitable for children under 16 years
This 5km (return) walking trail to the site of General Warren’s Camp, provides you with spectacular views of the Drakensberg & Spioenkop from the British perspective. Opportunity to visit all 16 marked gun placement sites
5. Anglo-Zulu War Tours: Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift – full day (10 hours) The British army under Lord Chelmsford had moved from the Eastern Cape border to the Zululand border during 1878. When the British ultimatum to the Zulu king, Cetshwayo, expired in January 1879, the British invaded Zululand in three separate columns. The Battle of Isandlwana took place when the central British column came into contact with the Zulus and suffered a humiliating and bloody defeat at the hands of a spirited Zulu army.
6. Battle of Blood River 1838, Battles of Talana & Elandslaagte – full day (10 hours) In 1838, the mighty Zulu army was defeated for the first time by the Voortrekker Commando under their leader, Andries Pretorius, hereby opening the way for the proclamation of the first Boer Republic – The Republic of Natalia. Talana was the Boers opening gambit in Natal, and although hailed as a British success, it was a pyrrhic victory with the Boers withdrawing in good order, leaving major casualties on the British side, including their general. Elandslaagte, fought the next day, was a decisive British victory. It may be considered to be the last of the set piece battles of the war. Curiously, having driven the Boers from the railway line, the British immediately withdrew, allowing the Boers to re-occupy it.
What to expect:
Half day tours 1,2,3 begin either at 08h30 & return around 13h00 for lunch or begin after lunch around 13h30 & return at sunset around 18h00. Times will be determined by guest numbers or weather conditions at the time. Full day tours 4 & 5 will depart at 07h00 & return around sunset.
Picnic lunches & refreshments are included on the tours. However, it is possible to dine at eateries on the battlefields route at your own cost.
A small amount of walking on fairly uneven terrain is required, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Sunscreen, sunhat & sunglasses are always required, winter or summer. Light fleece or jacket to be taken during all seasons. Light rain or wind proof jacket also recommended. Binoculars are recommended if you have an interest in nature, as you never know what might be encountered whilst on tour.
Hiking In The Drakensberg
Three Trees offers great access to The uKhahlamba National Park (formerly the Royal Natal National Park), Cathedral Peak and the Champagne Valley, which are all within an hours drive of the lodge. Maps & guide books can be arranged at the lodge with picnic lunches for hikes ranging from short half hour walks to full day hikes. Guided hikes can be arranged with our resident qualified guides. The rate includes transport, entrance fees, picnic lunch & guide for the day.
Guided Walks
The lodge is situated on 1,200ha of naturally rolling Drakensberg foothills. Both Simon & Cheryl are FGASA qualified Field Guides and have a wealth of knowledge on the Natural Fauna & Flora in the area. Joined by the dogs, and walking alongside the game reserve, a walk out in the hills is not to be missed. Well-marked trails are also available if you want to meander along in your own steam.
Self-guided walks on the property
There are numerous marked trails that are safe to navigate at your own steam. Wonderful vistas, birds & the occasional wild game can be spotted.
There are numerous opportunities for horse riding at and around Three Trees. We offer rides on the property, which is a working Brahman cattle farm, providing wonderful views of the Spioenkop Battlefield, the Game Reserve and the Drakensberg Mountains. They provide a wonderful opportunity to experience the spectacular countryside up close whether to view the flora and fauna, to gain insights into the difficulties of fighting a war with Victorian impedimenta on this terrain, or to view seldom visited parts of the Battlefield (for example the Boer trenches on nTabanyama).
Pony rides can also be arranged for children on request.
Spioenkop Game Reserve
Our position overlooking the Spioenkop Game Reserve affords great game viewing opportunities, whether it is from your room, on horseback or whilst out walking on our property. Rhino and giraffe and many varieties of antelope may be spotted grazing near the Lodge on the other side of the fence.
Managed by Ezimvelo Wildlife the park is well worth a visit. It is easily accessible by car and takes an hour to get to the entrance.
Birding
A bird list of 300 species has been recorded in the area, with Cape Vultures, Lanner Falcons, Buff Streaked Chats & Fairy Flycatchers all residing here. In the winter months (when the aloes are flowering) most mountain-dwelling birds descend to the foothills to take advantage of the sweet nectar & insects that adorn these spectacular plants. The Malachite sunbird is a stunning example of this. In the summer months, Northern migrants arrive to fill the air with calls & twittering that will keep any “twitcher” on his toes.
Mountain bikes available for guests to use. Road riding & technical guided trails available on request. Few children size bikes available too. These trails can be done with or without a guide, depending on the guest experience level.
Trails on the property providing wonderful views of the Spioenkop Battlefield, the Game Reserve and the Drakensberg Mountains. They provide a wonderful opportunity to experience the spectacular countryside up close whether to view the flora and fauna.
A truly authentic experience with one of the Three Trees staff members that takes you to the nearby village (8km down the road) for a look into the lives of the Hambrook residents.
Tailor-made to suit the guests interest or just an introduction to the Zulu culture. Can be done by bicycle for a half day outing or by vehicle for a shorter experience.

EXPERIENCE THE NAMIB
DESERT ON HORSEBACK
For the more adventurous of spirit, Desert Homestead Lodge offers a unique experience where guests can ride out onto the private reserve and sleep out in nature. The reserve is situated in between the majestic red sand sea of the Namib Desert and the rugged Naukluft mountains.
Leaving the stables and lodge behind, an unforgettable journey set off through wide open plains riding over a varied terrain changing from soft, sandy, stretched open fields, to rockier mountain trails, through dry riverbeds, under social weavers nests and around camelthorn trees.
The experienced guide will eagerly tell more about the environment, fauna and flora. Riders are almost guaranteed to come across a herd or two of grazing Oryx, springbok, or Zebra and some varieties of smaller carnivores, such as Jackal and bat-eared foxes.
Riding takes place at a comfortable pace so that everyone feels comfortable. Slower riders can hang back while more experienced riders go for long stretched-out gallops over grassy plains while winding the way towards the tented Camp, where refreshments await for a truly remarkable sundowner with magnificent views. After watching the sunset over the majestic mountains it’s time to kick off the boots, relax and enjoy the Namibian night skies. While Dinner gets ready on the campfire true Namibian style a refreshing shower awaits.
Dinner is served next to the crackling fire whilst conversation is sure to revert to the days riding. Then it’s time to retire to the comfortable tent or even a stretcher outside, for those who prefer to sleep out in nature under starry skies to get some rest before the next day’s riding.
Riders will wake up the next morning to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon and eggs cooking over an open fire while watching the horses being prepared for the next stretch of riding. After a hearty breakfast, it is time to stretch the legs once again and set off on horses who eagerly await the rest of the adventure.

It has 2 extended length single beds in an upstairs loft area accessible by stairs and an extended length king bed for parents downstairs. This room is perfect for families with children aged between 3 and 13. Under 3, the steps may be difficult and over 13... teenagers like more privacy. Note, that we don't hold to this age range. The landmark of Swellengrebel Street in Swellendam, better known as Swellendam's 'Historical Mile', the Drostdy Museum has been voted the best museum in South Africa and has become a landmark of South African heritage. The creative colaboration between owners of the Bukkenburg Pottery Studio and Gallery, David Schlapobersky and Felicity Potter, started in 1973 and lead them to Swellendam in 1996 when they opened the studio. Bukkenburg Pottery Studio and Gallery is situated in Swellengrebel Street, a short stroll down the street from Schoone Oordt.

De Hoop Nature Reserve is a 50km drive from Swellendam where the Potberg Mountains meet the shore. The reserve makes the perfect location for a day-trip and has its own restaurant that is open daily. Activities at De Hoop Nature reserve are endless - you can hike through Fynbos plains, go mountain biking along the gravel backroads, laze on the beach or take a game drive through this scenic reserve.
Marloth Nature Reserve is named after the pioneer botanist who, together with a deputation of Swellendam residents, petitioned the Minister of Lands and Forestry in 1928 to set aside part of the mountain as a nature reserve. During 1981, the reserve was enlarged to include the rest of the State Forest and the Swellendam hiking trail was opened.
The reserve’s vegetation is predominantly mountain fynbos, with patches of forest. There are several species of Protea and more than 25 species of erica, most of which flower in November. Marloth, like the rest of the southern Cape, has hot summers and cold winters. The higher mountain peaks are occasionally dusted in snow during the cold winter months.
As riding horses is not natural to the horse, we strive to keep our approach as pleasant and ethical as possible. We strive for “Harmonious Horse-Human Handling” (Debra-Leigh Mohle)
Our training techniques are based on evidence based scientific research and the horse’s welfare and also the horse and the rider’s safety are paramount at all levels of interaction.
A lot of our techniques and principles of training come from the work of Dr Andrew Mclean and the work of the international Society of Equitation Science. These techniques are firmly rooted in learning theory. Amy also spent some time training in Classical Dressage in Spain.
We take into consideration how the animal lives, behaves, how it learns and how it socializes in order to develop an uncomplicated “language” or “method” of communication between horse and rider. This allows us to safely and pleasantly influence the horse to do all the strange things we as humans require them to do.
Diesel & Crème is a Vintage Diner & Motel (The Karoo Moon Motel, House & Cottage) situated on the scenic Route 62 in Barrydale.
This place is crammed full of memorabilia which is famous for it's milkshakes in enticingly different combos. There's more, a large breakfast and lunch menu, they make a mean variety of burgers, but prepared to queue, such it's fame. Caution, it closes at 5pm.
David and Rita Trafford discovered the future Sijnn land while on holiday in Malgas in 2000. The soil and landscape reminded them of Portugal and they were immediately intrigued. A purchase agreement and more than 200 soil profiles later, approximately ten hectares of vines were planted and the name Sijnn Wines was appropriated to the venture – fittingly so as the word 'sijnn' is derived from the Khoisan word meaning riverbank. Today Sijnn Wines has become well known for our interesting and bold choices of cultivars and award-winning blends.
Open every Saturday 10:00 – 15:00 or by appointment during the week.
Sixty-one years ago, Schalk-Willem Joubert left Wellington for the fertile Tradouw Valley to farm mainly with fruit and wine grapes. His son, Jacobus Joubert, Meyer’s father, realised the potential of growing premium grape cultivars for the production of wine. They delivered Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to the Co-operative Cellar in Barrydale, Cabernet Franc was planted on the farm in 1982. The fermentation cellar was built in 1998 out of stone from the rocky soils, characteristic of the farm. In 1999, the first grapes were harvested and crushed for the production of wine. The R62 Merlot/Cabernet Blend (60:40) was released after a 14-month ageing period in Burgundy oak barrels. The production is currently just below 3000 cases per year.

The Conservatory at Schoone Oordt
Food is our thing. Meals at Schoone Oordt are made with love and passion. Our country food is respectful of ingredients, unpretentiously fine dining, honestly delicious and served with true Schoone Oordt style and flair. We are particularly particular about ethically sourcing the best produce from small local artisans, suppliers and growers. Being in the Overberg, we sit in the ‘breadbasket’ of the country, so it’s easy.
Our meat comes from Jacques at WildKalahari, our eggs, fresh fruit & veg from Shantal at The Earth Centre, our salmon trout from Alicia at B’Bos Trout, our duck from Kim at Serendipity Homestead, our pork from Richard, Lowerland Farm. Our wines from all over the Overberg, but especially Sijnn, Olivedale, Silverthorn, Joubert-Tradauw, Springfield and we source artisanal rum from Dawid at Afrikanis, tequila from Tim at Three Agave in the klein karoo as well as a massive selection of gins… too many to name here. You’ll have to come and try them for yourself.
We handmake as much as we can (so that we know what’s in it) from our breads, the most delicious cheese biscuits and scones to our chocolate truffles that appear at evening turndown.
We pay particular attention to and are very conscious of dietary requirements. There are already vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free and gluten-free options on the menu and we can exclude nuts if necessary. Note that our kitchen uses a lot of these ingredients in daily practice, so please do mention any serious allergies beforehand though so that we may be properly prepared.
We are thrilled to say that The Conservatory at Schoone Oordt has grown from strength to strength over the years and we can proudly stand as one of the top Swellendam Restaurants.
