Ficus Tree Climbing
Test your strength - both mental and physical - in the peaceful surroundings of our secondary forest. Venture to the heart of EL RIO with your Guía, who will introduce you to a tall ficus tree. The uniqueness of the trunk of these trees makes them perfect for climbing - twisted limbs rising from the soil provide nooks and crannies that you can utilize to hoist yourself to the top. Securely attached to a guiding rope - and with the expert guidance of your Guía - it will be your challenge to scale the tree. Whether you make it all the way to the top, or only half way up the trunk, this thrilling adventure will teach you as much about yourself as about the wonder of Mother Nature. Once you’ve hit your limit, enjoy an adrenaline rush as you abseil back to the forest floor. *To complement your active adventure, head up to THE WELL upon your return to enjoy a recovery session. We suggest the Hypervolt, a strong percussion device, offering deep-penetrating relief to stiff muscles. High Canopy Tree Net
Few have had the opportunity to alter their perspective so dramatically that they are sitting above the jungle canopy. Follow the adventure pathways of EL RIO to one of the tallest trees in our secondary forest. Once properly geared up, your Guía will give you an overview of your harness and teach you how to utilize your equipment to get you to the tree net awaiting at the top. As you make your way up, be sure to take your time and breathe as you connect more closely with nature and the world around you. Once above the treetops, kick back in the hand-crafted rope canopy as you observe various species of birds, the rustling of leaves and the rushing river below. When ready, you will finish with a true thrill: abseiling 100 feet down to the forest floor. One of our best-loved experiences, a visit to Don Nery’s farm is a must for all guests of AltaGracia. Set off on horseback through the forest, over shallow rivers and through tall-grass fields until you arrive at the humble abode of Don Nery and his wife Doña Yamileth. This beautiful couple will welcome you arms wide open into their home and farm, where you’ll receive an immersive education on the local way of life, extracting sugarcane and mastering the technique of homemade tortillas. Their farm boasts a diverse collection of livestock - from cows and goats to bunnies, chicken and geese - making for a fantastic destination for couples and families alike. Follow the journey of one of the country’s most famous crops from bean to cup with Los Jilgueros, our local coffee cooperative. High up in the hills of CEDRAL, tour this small, but renowned Pérez Zeledón producer, from their coffee farm to the processing facilities. Wrapping up the tour, you’ll get a brief lesson in various roasts, before sitting down for a tasting. Tastings are accompanied by a collection of local sweet and savory treats, and provide the perfect morning or afternoon snack. Roca de nubes
A hike for the true explorers, this high-altitude adventure sees you gaining close to 900 meters altitude over three kilometers. Starting early morning, you’ll walk amongst the clouds, through thick primary forest, over rivers and around large boulders. When you reach the top, you are treated to an unbelievable view. High in the mountains, you float above the clouds - giving true meaning to ‘Roca de Nubes.’ You’ll enjoy a fire-grilled mountain picnic along the way, your Guía building your personal fire. The way down sees you testing your balance, as your descent reveals a different challenge. *Recommended for active hikers and adventurers, this is a 6-hour roundtrip journey. Upon your return, enjoy a recovery session at THE WELL. Treat your feet using advanced, touchless lymph boots. This equipment uses dynamic air compression to create a restorative massage that increases circulation leaving you feeling refreshed and rested.
