“El Solitario” is an old trail around the southeast face of the Osorno Volcano in Chile’s oldest national park, Vicente Pérez Rosales, founded in 1926. During our hike we will see the effect that thousands of years of volcanic activity has had on the site’s geomorphology.
We will hike through forest that grew back naturally (secondary forest) after an eruption and see trees of the Nothofagus species, such as the Coigüe, which is endemic to southern Chile and Argentina.
The trail is covered with ash from a recent eruption of the Calbuco Volcano in 2015. The forest eventually ends abruptly onto a clearing
where an old river once flowed and that was one of the primary places that lava descended during the last eruption of the Osorno Volcano in 1834 when this area was still completely uninhabited. The volcano has been dormant ever since.
The El Solitario Trail provides an introduction to southern Chile’s typical Valdivian forests as well as the geological processes that have taken place over a very long period of time.
Optional: After completing the trail, hikers can visit the Saltos de Petrohué, one of the area’s primary attractions.

This hike covers an old trail used by Chile’s original peoples as well as the Jesuits who came to evangelize the region. The “Jesuit’s Route” crosses the pampas on the eastern side of the Andes Mountains on the Argentine side.
This walk begins in a little-known sector of the park called La Picada, where Chile’s first mountain refuges were built in 1933 and where there was once a ski center on the volcano. It begins with a 40-minute ascent to reach the pass between the Osorno Volcano and the La Picada Hill. This spot provides an incredible panoramic view of the Todos Los Santos Lake and the peaks of the park’s primary volcanoes.
The view of the lake continues as the trail descends to the beach in the Petrohué sector. This hike provides a view of the peak of the Osorno Volcano, with its ice caves on the eastern side as well as signs of the volcanic and glacial processes that sculpted the unique geography of the southern Andes.
This is an ideal program for hiking and nature photography enthusiasts.

Travelling east along the Reloncaví Sound, we come to the first stretch of the famous Austral Highway, one of the most scenic roads in the world. We follow it to the entrance of the Alerce Andino National Park and enter either through the Correntoso or Lenca sectors where we will have beautiful views of volcanoes, valleys, and the Pacific Ocean.
This park was created to protect one of the last alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides) forests. This species of conifer tree was on the brink of extinction due to indiscriminate foresting in the 19 th and 20 th centuries because its wood is highly prized for building homes and ships. Alerces are considered of enormous
importance and thought to be the second oldest species on Earth, and there are some that are more than 3,000 years old. It s also grows to more than 40 meters in height, making it the tallest tree in the Southern Cone.
The biodiversity in the Alerce Andino National Park is quite unique and is home to many species, such as the pudú, the world’s smallest deer, a wild cat called a guiña, and marsupials called monitos del monte.
We will see more than 50 lagoons within the park and marvel at ancestral species that were alive before the time of Christ.

This hike will take us to different parts of the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. We have two options for our descent; we can hike down along the El Solitario Trail through secondary forests or we can visit the beautiful Laguna Verde and walk along its short interpretive trails. Next we stop for lunch, either at the hotel or in a spot hidden among nature

This beautiful spot also provides impressive views of the Osorno and Puntiagudo Volcanoes and the imposing 3,491-meter Mt. Tronador, the highest peak in the southern Andes. Todos Los Santos Lake & the Cayutué Lagoon Trail

Program duration: 7 hours

Total elevation gain: 413 m.
Total elevation decrease: 259 m.
Maximum altitude: 479 m.a.s.l.
Minimum altitude: 180 m.a.s.l.
Difficulty: Moderate
Trail time: 4–5 hours

We begin this excursion by boating across the beautiful Todos los Santos Lake with its intense emerald-green color produced by fine glacial sediments from Mt. Tronador in the water.
The boat heads through the Cayutué Bay to the southernmost point on the lake to the Cayutué Cove (ensenada). We will hike along an old trail known as the Route of the Jesuits and cross the valley that divides the Sierra de Santo Domingo in half. We will hike southward on an easy trail surrounded by Valdivian forest to the beautiful Cayutué Lagoon in the middle of the valley, where we will stop for lunch while enjoying the beautiful view of the Puntiagudo Volcano.
We will then continue south, where the trail becomes the first section of the Vuriloche Pass, a historic route used by the indigenous Huilliche people on the Chilean side and the Poyas on the Argentine side, who engaged in constant exchange of species and products. Spanish expeditions later used the same path on their search for the mythical City of the Caesars that they thought they would find in this zone of the southern Andes.
There is evidence that the people of Monte Verde may have been the first to travel this trail, which would make it the oldest in all of the Americas.

Archaeology and Nature: Monte Verde & Lahuen Ñadi:

Program duration: 7 hours
Activities: Visit the Monte Verde archaeological site / Walk through the Lahuen Ñadi Natural Monument
Includes: Transportation – Entrance to the Monte Verde site – Entrance to the Lahuen Ñadi Reserve – Snack – Binoculars – Hiking poles – WFR-certified bilingual guide.
What to bring: Hiking shoes – waterproof jacket – fleece – base layer – sun hat – sun block – water bottle – sun glasses – hat.

The day begins with a visit to one of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas —Monte Verde, just 35 kilometers northeast of the city of Puerto Montt, where local residents discovered evidence of ancient human occupation in 1977.
In 1997 the scientific community certified that the Monte Verde site was inhabited by humans 14,500 years ago, significantly predating the 12,900-year-old Clovis site in North America, making Monte Verde the oldest human settlement in the Americas.
The discovery disproved the theory that humans made their way southward through the Americas from the northern hemisphere and also opened many questions that are still unanswered.
A historian and Monte Verde expert will accompany us at the site, showing us where the
discoveries were made and sharing all the stories and current theories about this interesting and mysterious place.
Next we make a brief tour of the Lahuen Ñadi Natural Monument, a small, 200-hectare perfectly conserved natural oasis just 15 kilometers from Puerto Montt. This green nature sanctuary is home to a wide variety of native trees, such as the alerce—some more than 1,800 years old—as well as the coigüe, canelo, tepa, luma, arrayán, and tepú. It is also an excellent spot for bird watching. This site gives us an idea of what the local environment must have been like when the first inhabitants of Monte Verde arrived thousands of years ago.
