Emboo Camp
Game Drives
The electric safari vehicles are a game changer. Emboo River's vehicles are solar powered, silent and emit zero CO2. You will be able to enjoy safaris while listening to the sounds of nature, enjoying the scents of the savanna and getting close to their favourite animals... without disturbing them.
Did you know that your sighting opportunities increase because guides can now use all their senses while tracking animals?!
Emboo River recently hosted a guest who wrote this beautiful article on the electric safari vehicles for Travel + Leisure magazine:
To continue our cat theme, if a typical safari vehicle roars and an Italian sports car purrs, then an electric safari car glides. As the 4x4 rolls across the Maasai Mara's open expanses, all you hear is the wish-swish of grass against the vehicle's metal sides while you slither in silence up to a cheetah ripping into an antelope carcass. The car is so quiet that the cat doesn't even flinch.
"It's super cool, going closer to game, with no noise, no emissions — it's just amazing," says William Partois Ole Santian, the manager and co-owner of Emboo River Camp in the Maasai Mara, the only Mara safari camp that has so far gone all-electric with its fleet. "This is exactly what the Mara needs now: People who are eco-minded and sensitive about their footprints in the wild."

Carbon Neutral Safari
“Mataramat enkop pee eramat iyook.”, a Maasai saying that translates to “If you take care of nature, nature will take care of you.”
Legend has it that the Maasai Community made an agreement with Enkai (God). The Maasai Community would be given cattle and in return they had to promise to be the custodians of nature. A promise must never be broken. Emboo River is keeping this promise by running the first truly sustainable lodge in the region. Emboo River promises to be a custodian of nature, to be a catalyst for change and to continuously promote sustainable practices.
Emboo River's carbon neutral operations are regularly assessed and include solar powered safari vehicles, 100% Solar power 24/7, 100% of grey and black water filtered via local plants and reused so not one drop of water goest to waste, organic hydroponic garden and meals prepared on biogas from its own food scraps, a community project turning trash into treasure, a tree planting project called "Rooting for our Future" and much more.
During the recent COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, the Kenyan government announced that lodges and tour operators in the Maasai Mara and other natural areas within Kenya need to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Emboo River is supporting tourism actors to turn this commitment into action... so soon the only roar you will hear during your safaris is that of a lion, and not of an engine.

Tree planting
Participate in Emboo River's project: Rooting for our future. Guests are invited to plant trees to offset the CO2 emission from their road or air transport between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara. In Emboo River's tree nursery, guests can select their own trees, plant them and write their name on a stick next to the plant. Afterwards guests will receive an email with the name and GPS coordinates of their tree, so they could visit their tree in the future.
