San Martín de los Andes is a charming little 'Swiss-style' mountain resort lying on the banks of Lake Lácar in the Neuquen province, some 200km north of Bariloche and 40km from the Chilean border. It's best-known as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a few days of peace and tranquillity in an unspoiled natural environment. The town is in a spectacular setting surrounded by high mountain peaks and ancient beechwood and cypress forests. The area has two busy periods – in the winter for skiing at the Cerro Chapelco ski resort and in the summer for trekking, climbing, mountain-biking and horseback riding in the nearby National Park Lanín.
