Zakouma National Park, managed by African Parks and the Chadian government is renowned for its dramatic recovery from poaching, it hosts over 500 African bush elephants, 50% of the world's critically endangered Kordofan giraffe population, and over 370 bird species.
This expedition is a real adventure for those truly looking to get off the beaten pathway, away from the crowds and experience this unique and exciting destination. We will spend the night out on the pans in order to to spend time with the mega herd of elephants and the huge flocks of birds enormous herds of antelope and Central African savanna buffalo that roam the park’s plains. The antelope include rarities such as the northern greater kudu, red-fronted gazelle, Lelwel hartebeest, tiang (a type of topi), roan antelope and Buffon’s kob. You’ll also find Defassa waterbuck, oribi, Bohor reedbuck, duiker, and warthog. With so much prey around it is also a haven for the predators lion, leopard, and cheetah – are all present in increasing numbers, was well as the smaller species such as serval, caracal, jackal, pale foxes and both species of hyena.
The wetlands are vital for migrating birds who use them as breeding grouns and have enormous flocks of pelicans, storks, black crowned cranes and surrounding the wetlands you can find the northern carmine bee-eaters, black crested barbet and Abyssinian ground hornbill as well as the largest number or northern African ostriches.
A truly unique, off-the-beaten-track adventure where their visit directly contributes towards an ongoing conservation success story. Zakouma’s recovery is nothing short of remarkable and has set it on the firm path to becoming one of the continent’s top (and most unusual) safari destinations. A big 5 destination with endemic and unusual animals and birds it is the ultimate destination for those that are looking for something beyond an infinity pool and a G&T its an exploration for those who feel privileged to receive genuine authenticity whilst managing expectations of luxury. Joy and growth come from getting out the comfort box and into the adventure box.
This trip will be guided by Chris Walti was born in Switzerland and is fluent in Spanish, Italian, English and German, he has travelled over 70 countries and has a passion for the path yet unexplored. He discovered photography in 2017 after a desire to share more than stories from his adventures and his travels are largely shaped on what species you can find in a destination. Chris has been leading wildlife explorations world wide and takes pride in his ability to connect with people on the ground as well as his guests! He loves nothing more than a truly authentic experience which has led him lead trips to places most can only dream of or watch on National Geographic. His love for this has led him to be one of the industries most intriguing guides well known for daring to go beyond the traditional destinations.
Co-hosting is Chloe McCormack, born in Scotland, functional in English she has explored fewer countries but the majority of the African continent. A firm wildlife fanatic, former guide, qualified in wildlife forensics, keen wildlife photographer and manager of a lodge in Zambia she loves nothing more than sharing her passions with guests and loves hosting! With age came a passion for exploring and the harder to reach destinations have been a huge pull in her latter years. The link between conservation and tourism is incredibly important and she firmly believes each tourist can and should make a difference to encourage a partnership between people and wildlife.
