We are pleased that you have chosen Trek Safari’s as the agent to organize your Bolivian fishing adventure. This popular fishing program offers you a unique angling experience in one of the most remote areas of South America. In addition to the tremendous variety of fishing species you will catch, you will also encounter caiman, capybara as well as more special of birds than you will likely see anywhere.
The Amazon and Mata Grosso rivers originate in the Beni region of Bolivia and the Itenez River is one of the main head waters that form these two giant ecosystems. Not only will you catch ferocious peacocks but you should also catch the toothy Payara, mammoth Arapaima, Pacu, Oscars, Piranhas and other species that you will have never heard of before not to mention several varieties of Amazon catfish like the Surubi ! The Caño Negro lodge is literally translated to “Black Branch” as in the black branch of the Itenez river. The water has lots of tannin from the jungle in it, giving it its dark tea colored appearance. The fishing is excellent for bait casting, spinning or even fly fishing so whatever your passion, Caño Negro has you covered. There are numerous species of fish to catch and really we suggest you fish for peacocks in the mornings, then after lunch try for Pacu and Payara late afternoon. The guides are extremely open to whatever your desires are and you could even fish till well after dark for the huge Amazonian catfish if you want. These peacocks are not normally huge, usually averaging from 3-8 pounds and Payara 6-15 pounds and the Pacu and catfish could be from 20-80 pounds. At least for one evening I suggest you hang out for some giant cat fishing. When I say giant they several different species that can get well over 100 pounds! For the heartiest of anglers we suggest targeting the monster Arapaima that frequent these waters. The current lodge record for Arapiama is a whopping 325 pounds so be prepared.
Upon arrival into Santa Cruz, Bolivia, you will met and assisted through customs before being transferred to the domestic airport for your private three hour charter flight to the Caño Negro Lodge, arriving in time for lunch and to get settled in before your first afternoon of fishing. The following two, or three days (depending on the program you have chosen) will be full fishing days, returning to the lodge everyday at noon for lunch and siesta if you wish, before heading out to fish the remainder of the day. The last day you will fish till mid morning and return to Santa Cruz where you will have time at leisure until its time to board your international flight home.
Cano Negro Lodge will only take eight anglers at a time so space will be very limited as the season is brief, from late August through October. Book your date early as the fishing is excellent in this little piece of heaven in the jungle and we always fill up.
