Located in northeastern Brazil, the Parnaíba Headwaters National Park is 1.9-million-acre. At one third the size of New Jersey, the PHNP is one of the Brazil’s largest parks outside the Amazon and protects more dry tropical forest than any other reserve on the Americas.
Only 10% of the world’s original dry tropical forest remains today, while half of all wet tropical forest still stands so the Parnaíba Headwaters National Park is of exceptional conservation importance.
The area of the national park takes in four states of Brazil: Tocantins, Bahia, Maranhão and Piaui. The landscape comprises a mixture of pristine dry forests, wide, open valleys and rambling savannah grasslands, offset by the dusty-red sandstone mesas and cliffs, which soar up to 300 meters in places.
