Patagonia Puma Quest: From Chile to Argentina. March 2026: Torres del Paine and Parque Patagonia
This journey into the heart of South America’s southern wilderness takes you across two of Patagonia’s most spectacular conservation landscapes: Chile’s Torres del Paine and Argentina’s Parque Patagonia. The focus is clear—seeking out the elusive and iconic Puma. With experienced trackers and naturalists leading the way, you'll follow fresh signs—tracks, scrapes, scat—and immerse yourself in the art of quiet observation, often walking through open valleys and rolling steppe where sightings are most likely.
Parque Patagonia, once a vast sheep estancia, is now a flagship rewilding project led by Tompkins Conservation. The area is a mosaic of grasslands, basalt cliffs, riverine woodland and high Andean ridges, offering ideal habitat for Guanaco, the puma’s main prey, as well as Andean Condors, Armadillos, and the rare Huemul deer. In contrast, Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park combines glacial lakes, jagged peaks, and windswept plains. Known for its dramatic scenery, the park is one of the best places in the world for wild Puma encounters.
Along the way, you may encounter a wide array of Patagonian wildlife. Herds of Guanaco are a constant presence, and their alarm calls often signal a nearby predator. You’ll scan cliffs for Condors and Caracaras, walk quietly through lenga forests in search of foxes, and keep an eye on the waterways for Upland Geese, Torrent Ducks, and the occasional Patagonian Hog-nosed Skunk. With luck, you may even glimpse the world’s southernmost cats—Geoffroy’s Cat or Andean Cat—though both are extremely rare.
This itinerary is paced for time in each park to follow the rhythms of the animals and the weather. You’ll be based in comfortable accommodation with good access to key wildlife areas and be guided by local guides and trackers with intimate knowledge of the terrain and Puma behaviour. It's a chance to experience a wilder side of Patagonia—where conservation, landscape and wildlife all come together.
