Welcome to the enchanting Zambezi Region, formerly known as the Caprivi Strip! Nestled in northeastern Namibia, this wild and untamed paradise beckons birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. The strip is renowned for its unique blend of habitats, ranging from verdant floodplains and dense woodlands to expansive grasslands and meandering rivers. This ecological diversity creates an ideal environment for an impressive array of bird species, including some of the most sought-after sightings in Southern Africa.
With over 450 recorded bird species, this region is a birdwatcher’s dream. Many of these species are exclusive to the Zambezi.
Key Species: Rufous-bellied Tit, Souza’s Shrike, Sharp-tailed Starling, Racket-tailed Roller, Slaty Egret, Pel’s and African Barred Owlet, African Skimmer, Rock and Collared Pratincoles, Arnot’s Chat, Shelley’s and Purple-banded Sunbirds, African Finfoot, Western-Banded Snake-Eagle, Dickinson’s Kestrel, Eastern Nicator, Yellow-throated Leaflove, Trumpeter Hornbill, Schalow’s Turaco, Lesser Jacana, Wattled Crane, Brown Fire-finch, Allen’s Gallinule, Luapula Cisticola, Saddle-billed Stork, Pennant-winged and Swamp Nightjar, African Pygmy Goose, Rosy-throated Longclaw, Southern Ground Hornbill, Green-capped Eremomela, Green-backed and Brown-backed Honeybird, Greater Swamp Warbler and Stierling’s Wren-Warbler.
Other Species: Crested and Black-collared Barbet, Bearded and Bennett’s Woodpeckers, Grey-hooded (Chestnut–bellied), Pied, Giant, Brown-hooded, Half-collared and Malachite Kingfisher, African Fish Eagle, Village, Southern Brown-throated, Thick-billed, Village, Golden (Holub’s) and Spectacled Weaver, Tinkling and Chirping Cisticola, White-backed Night Heron, Goliath Heron, Black Heron, Cattle, Intermediate, Little and Great Egrets, Swamp and Tropical Boubou, Kurrichane Buttonquail, African Golden Oriole, African Yellow White-eye, Southern Black Tit, Dark Chanting Goshawk, White-browed, Black, Coppery-tailed and Senegal Coucal, Hartlaub’s and Arrow-marked Babbler, White-browed Robin Chat, Bearded and White-Browed Scrub Robin, Little, White-fronted, Blue-cheeked and Southern Carmine Bee-eaters and Broad-billed Roller.
Habitat: A good selection of habitats is on offer from broad-leafed, brachystegia and riparian woodlands, to vegetated dunes and ancient drainage lines with established Acacia, Terminalia and Combretum woodland and permanent rivers, swamps, and floodplain areas.
The tour starts and ends in Katima Mulilo. The closest international airports are Kasane (Botswana), Vic Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingston (Zambia).
