Early adventurers, artists and romantics popularised their seafaring expeditions to this island where the Greeks called it Taprobane, The Arabs knew it as Serendib, the Portuguese called it Ceilao, which the British changed to Ceylon while the India subcontinent it was know as Lanka.
The tropical island has been famous for its precious gems, tea plantations, citadels and forts, ancient temples, nature reserves and sandy beaches.
