No visit to Zimbabwe would be complete without a visit to Victoria Falls, and time your visit around late February and March, and you will experience the falls in peak flow, along with hitting the best birding season!

1. Chamabondo Tented Camp (Zambezi National Park); Set within the beautiful teak woodlands and Kalahari sands of Zambezi National Park, Chamabondo offers an immersive, wild birding environment. Here, the landscape transitions dynamically from open mopane forest and seasonal vleis (shallow, marshy wetlands) to dense, vibrant riverine growth flanking the Zambezi River. The birding experience is fast-paced and incredibly rewarding; recent groups have recorded an astonishing 251 species over a four-day stay, with single guests comfortably ticking off 127 species just within the immediate camp and riverfront.

• Avian Highlights: Keep your eyes on the water and overhanging branches for the elusive African Finfoot, Rock Pratincole, Collared Palm-Thrush, Western Banded Snake Eagle, and the Schalow’s Turaco. If you are lucky, the seasonal African Skimmer can be seen gliding over the water's surface.

2. The Hide (Hwange National Park); Positioned inside a private concession adjoining the legendary Hwange National Park, The Hide places you in the heart of classic big-game country where birding and traditional safaris seamlessly merge. The terrain is a diverse patchwork of dry mopane woodland, acacia scrub, expansive open grasslands, and vital seasonal pans (waterholes). With over 400 species recorded, the experience here is grand in scale, heavily featuring massive raptors and iconic terrestrial birds walking the plains.

• Avian Highlights: The ultimate prize here is the massive Southern Ground Hornbill and the heavy-set Kori Bustard. The skies and scrub are equally alive with the Bradfield's Hornbill, Martial Eagle, Bateleur, African Hawk-Eagle, Dickinson's Kestrel, and the striking Rosy-throated Longclaw.

3. Amanzi Lodge (Harare); Aklthough this stop is mainly for logistical reasons, the lodge is set in tranquil urban oasis, which provides a remarkably relaxed pace of birding, making it an absolute dream for photographers wanting to set up steady, well-lit shots. The terrain comprises beautifully manicured mature gardens, pockets of native wetland, nearby dams, and classic Miombo woodland (open deciduous woodland characterised by Brachystegia trees). It is an incredibly productive stopover, frequently yielding over 100 species right on the property or directly adjacent to it.

• Avian Highlights: This is your premier spot for target Miombo specials, including the Miombo Double-collared Sunbird, Miombo Tit, and Green-backed Honeybird. The gardens are also home to the flamboyant Purple-crested Turaco and the elegant African Paradise Flycatcher.

4. Aberfoyle Lodge (Honde Valley); For the true connoisseur, Aberfoyle Lodge is the crown jewel of the itinerary. Nestled in the dramatic, mist-shrouded Honde Valley at the absolute base of the Eastern Highlands, the terrain shifts into a lush montane paradise. You will be birding through pristine evergreen and riverine forests, rolling green tea estates, and montane grasslands. The experience here requires a bit more focus and patience as you peer into the thick canopy, but the rewards are unmatched: this is Zimbabwe's premier hotspot for endemic and near-endemic forest species.
