La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and a great jumping off point for all the adventures that the Sea of Cortez holds. It is a waterfront town with a charming malecon (boardwalk) along the sea, marinas full of sailboats and yachts, and terrific local eateries.
The sixth largest island in Mexico, this remote chunk of land punches out of the Sea of Cortez, 60 kilometres off the coast of Baja California Sur. Arid mountains dominate the rugged landscape, their peaks scraping the sky. The turquoise water surrounding the island creates a sharp contrast against the dry, earthy tones of the desert landscape. At Punta Salinas, Zodiac skiffs bring visitors to a shore dominated by a historic salt farm, its white landscape adding contrast to the island's scenery. Some may choose to explore the abandoned salt works, while others head directly to the water, with kayaks offering the chance to navigate hidden coves and coral reefs filled with marine life. Inland, hiking trails wind through the mountains, providing those who venture up with sweeping views of the island and the expansive blue horizon.
