The Amazon

Days 1 - 2

The Amazon Jungle is famous worldwide as a biodiversity hotspot and a dream destination for intrepid travellers, known for its wealth of exotic wildlife and flora. Although it extends across seven different South American nations, approximately 60% of the Amazon falls into Brazilian territory, taking up an area roughly the same size as Western Europe. Visitors who venture here will have the privilege of entering a world apart – a lush wilderness teeming with plant and animal life, offering the experience of a lifetime. Trek through a tangled rainforest, gently float upstream on a boat upriver, fish for piranha, play around with pink river dolphins, and pay a visit to the indigenous tribes of the Amazon and learn about their artwork, homes, and cuisine.

The Amazon Peru

Days 2 - 3

The Peruvian Amazon is one of the few remaining pristine environments on earth, sprawling across 60% of the country’s land mass and composed of roughly 80% primary forest. The best way to experience the region is by taking a ‘canopy tour’, or enjoying a dawn cruise down the area’s expansive system of waterways. The area is known for its incredible melange of wildlife, which includes vividly coloured macaws and parrots, vociferous red howler monkeys, capybaras, and enormous Goliath bird-eater spiders, to name but a few. The main tourist hub here is Puerto Maldonado, from where a proliferation of tour companies can transport you to the far reaches of the forest.

State of Amazonas

Days 5 - 6

Situated in northwestern Brazil where the mighty Solimoes, Negro, and Madeira rivers converge to form the grand Rio Amazonas, the Amazonas State is the largest in Brazil and is covered almost entirely by the Amazon rainforest. The rivers join at the capital port city of Manaus, which serves as a great base for exploring the area and offers some interesting forest tours and landmarks of its own. Visitors can look forward to taking a boat tour of the Rio Negro's Anavilhanas Archipelago and its hundreds of islands, occupied by a number of indigenous villages. Other popular attractions include the Jardim Botânico Adolpho Ducke in Manaus, the world’s largest urban forest, and, also in Manaus, the gorgeous opera house of Teatro Amazonas, built at the height of the rubber boom.
