Set on the eastern shore of Sicily, a 55 minutes’ drive north of Catania, Carruba is a tranquil, tiny town boasting dramatic natural scenery, swathes of lush vineyards and unspoilt forests, and a diversity of excellent accommodation and dining options. The town is famous for its striking wall of a cliff, a long stretch of stone fringing the coast that plunges from a great height down into the azure Mediterranean waters. Carruba has plenty of good services and makes a quieter location as a base than some of the other towns for exploring the beautiful island.
Resting at the foot of a looming active volcano is Stromboli, the main settlement on Stromboli Island in the Aeolian archipelago located just off the northern tip of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The small town is covered by white cubic-shaped buildings and a few restaurants and bars overlooking a black sand beach.
Situated in Salina, the greenest of the seven Aeolian Islands, the Malfa commune famously produces capers, olives, figs, and sweet white wine sourced from the island's fertile soil. Across the lush expanse of vineyards and fields are humble dwellings and an assortment of resorts, boutique hotels, B&Bs, holiday houses, restaurants and bars nestled amid verdant slopes that descend to the seashore. In the sleepy old town, the 18th-century Church of Sant'Anna houses many precious paintings dating back to the 20th century. At the Aeolian Museum of Emigration of Malfa, fascinating displays full of testimonies, tickets, passports, photographs, and original documents are displayed in honour of the many islanders who emigrated to Australia and America for a better life.
With its visibly smoking craters and the engrossing sulphurous aroma, the unique island of Vulcano, the southernmost of the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, rests off northeastern Sicily. Boasting more than meets the eye, travellers who explore beyond the lively Porto di Levante will discover the flourishing vineyards and olive groves of the central plateau’s villages; two unique beaches that are characterised by their beautiful dark, volcanic sand; the warm and welcoming water that surround the island; and the healing mud baths which have made Vulcano famous. This seemingly hidden European gem is an adventure seekers playground and a nature lovers dream, with its plethora of comfortable, yet rewarding hikes up the enchanting volcanoes, all of which overlook breathtakingly beautiful vistas over the rocky terrain and azure waters.
