Consistently voted the happiest country in the world, the little nation of Bhutan is set at the far eastern end of the Himalayas, between India and China. Bhutan only began to open its doors to outsiders in the 1970s and still has a strict sustainability policy regarding tourism. As a result, it has retained a deep cultural authenticity and has preserved its environment admirably, making it one of Asia’s most beguiling and unforgettable destinations. Highlights include incredible forts and temples perched on sheer mountain cliffs, a rich (predominantly Buddhist) culture, and spectacular scenery – ranging from temperate sub-tropical plains and valleys cloaked with dense forest to lofty sub-Alpine mountains capped with snow.

Embedded on the western slopes of the Black Mountains is the bowl-shaped Phobjikha Valley, a staggeringly scenic glacial valley perched at 3000 metres above sea level and tucked close to central Bhutan. A large flock of black-necked cranes soar above the vast stretches of luxuriant greenery that swathe the countryside, covering the alpine territory with thick grassland, marsh, and dwarf bamboo. Abundant wildlife also inhabits the area, including the barking deer, wild boars, sambar, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan serow, leopards and foxes. Highlights include the Gangtey Goenpa Monastery, the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre, and a 2-hour trek along the Gangtey Nature Trail. The valley also serves as a convenient base for the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, one of the biggest virgin tracks of forest in the Himalayas.

Dit zijn zeven tempels, gebouwd tegen een rotswand op 3120m boven zeeniveau. Het is aangeraden om dit te doen op het einde van het verblijf, wanneer u bent geacclimatiseerd.
