Day 2

Laikipia

Day notes

After an early breakfast, transfer to Wilson Airport for a scheduled flight to Nanyuki (depending on the time of year the flight can take between 45min or longer - as the some flights may go via the Mara first). On arrival at Nanyuki, you will be met by your safari team and transfer by road (a 2 hour drive) to Nayasura Camp where your safari will start at your first mobile tented camp.

You will be welcomed by your guide and team of Laikipia Masai and Samburu staff and the camels. The local Laikipia Masai call these rocks Nayasura and stone chippings suggest that they have been used as a camp for millennia. The rocks will be used as a starting point for you with a refreshing lunch and short afternoon rest in classic roomy safari tents.

Once it cools off a little, you will head out on a walk looking for game and getting a feel for the country. As the sun begins to set you will find yourself at the crest of Nayasura with drinks and bitings, looking for wildlife below and watching the baboons come back to roost on the face of the rock. Back at camp after hot showers and drinks around the fire you will have a sit down dinner under the stars.

Day 3

Laikipia

Day notes

From Nayasura you will head out early after breakfast to see as much game as possible on your walk north towards Nyarara Camp. Nyarara means cheetah in Masai and the camp was given this name because of a large male that has been seen in the area.

You will walk across large plains as well as mixed bush looking for herds of Common and Grevy’s zebra, oryx and Grant’s gazelle, which predominate on the large plains. In the mixed bush you will find Dik Diks, Gerenuk, Impala and Lesser Kudu if you are lucky enough to see them. The pack camels with your camp will have taken a more direct route than you and they will have arrived and set up the camp before your arrival. You will arrive at camp in time for lunch and a cold drink. After lunch you will relax and walk to a pretty spot for sundowners.

Day 4

Samburu National Reserve

Day notes

Today, you will be heading down toward the Ewaso Nyiro River where you will stay, which runs along the eastern edge of the Laikipia Plateau and then turns eastward toward Samburu National Reserve. Along the way you will be looking for Eland, Steinbuck and Giraffe while enjoying the changing scenery. When you arrive at the river you may want to take a quick swim before lunch.

After lunch you can visit a local manyata and watch the livestock coming in for the night or head to a pretty rock for a sundowner. There are amazing granitic outcrops that are perfect for rock climbing with top ropes where guides can take you here if you wish. There are varying degrees of difficulty, from beginners to extreme.

Expert tips:

Activities on offer at Tumaren Camp;

Guided Walks

These can be short walks / strolls or longer walks for a few hours.The wildlife in this area is rich and you can enjoy walks in different locations each day.

Camel Rides

Especially popular with children. The camels are very friendly and useful for carrying children that can tire faster than adults giving parents a bit more freedom to walk for a longer time without complaints.

Rock Climbing

Trained guides are available and have set up a number of top rope climbs which range from beginner levels to inter mediate levels . The guide belays the climber from below and the climber simply climbs up to the anchor and is then lowered back down. The routes are good for children and adults alike.

Tracking

The trackers are excellent and it is very rewarding tracking and trying to sneak up on an animal and learning their skills.

Swimming

The river is a great place to cool off in the heat of the day and with kids a wonderful way to pass an afternoon.

Game drives & Night drives

The Community;

School

If you are interested you can visit the nearby school that is supported by the camp, and if you are willing, you may want to donate to these causes;

  • A food programme where the school lunches are susidised with protein and additional food, so that there is enough for the children.
  • Fund a child whose parents cannot afford the fees
  • Fund a teacher – many times the teachers are unpaid
  • Bring books, solar lights,pens and pads and these are always very useful and appreciated.

Market visit

Please ask your guide as this happens once every two weeks on a Wednesday in Kimancho and every Tuesday in Ol Donyo Nyiro. This is a 1 hour drive away.

Manyatta visit

It is interesting visiting a local home in the evening when the livestock is coming in for the night. You can watch the goats and cows being milked and go in to a home and see how the people live their daily lives.

Camel creche

A visit to the female camel boma is very rewarding, where you can watch the baby camels suckling and help milk a camel if you wish.

Samburu Games

The trackers and guides have a wealth of local games that they can play with the children.

Beading

Making a beading masai bracelet or ring with the guidance of Mary or Leah.

Football

With the local village / community

Jogging

We often have people wanting a quick run in the morning – please arrange this with your guide and he can send a person with you.

If you are interested in Research;

This needs at least 48 hours notice to arrange so please let us know as soon as possible if this is of interest to you.

Baboon walk (www.baboonsrus.com)

There are some habituated baboons that have been studied for the last 20 years by Shirley Strum and her team through the Uaso Ngiro Baboon Project. This is a great way to spend a few hours following this troop with the resident research assistant and learning about these fascinating creatures.

*Cost is US$ 80 per person including the donation and transport to and from the baboons. This is an early morning activity.

Mpala Research Centre (www.mpala.org)

This centre is about a 1 hour drive from Tumaren Camp and there are many fascinating research programmes that are ongoing from here. By prior arrangement you can take a morning tour.

Some projects include: Grevy Zebra Research, Vulturine Guinea Fowl and Grassland Restoration project.

*There is an extra cost for this of US$ 150 per person including transport and the donation to Mpala.
