Gamkaskloof (The Hell) represents one of the most hidden-away valleys in SA, formed by the cleavage caused by adjacent iron-ore and scaly sandstone formations in the Swartberg Mountain Range. No wonder that it had been declared a World Heritage Site in 1997 and therefore not to be missed. The road into the valley below follows this cleft in the mountains and therefore is winding, narrow and contains a fair number of passes.

It is a trip not easily forgotten: the mountains, gorges, vegetation and clear air bedazzle the visitor. Although the road department always tries to keep the road in a good state, sudden mountain storms can cause it to become quite rough. The first 37 kilometers follows the contours of the mountains, but as the Kloof itself is reached the road forms a winding and spectacular pass leading to the valley floor far below. In the valley the road now passes through riverine shrubs and an abundance of thorn and wild olive trees.

History unfolds itself as old dwellings, the old school house and remnants of farming activity is passed. The Gamka River is crossed by a low water crossing and should be crossed with care. Our gate lies right at the end of this road – past Annatjie Joubert’s “Fonteinplaas”, across the Gamka River and past Cape Nature’s “Ouplaas” – a distance of approximately 20 kilometers on the valley floor.

Accommodation includes Rustic Cottages for sharing.

Day 12: Cape Town

One Way Vintage Car Transfer from Hotel to Franschhoek

Enjoy a Franschhoek Guided Cape Gourmet Delights Tour with Wine and Food pairings that will delight you.

The rates will include the wine and food pairing fees at the 3 wine estates mentioned as well as lunch (choice of starter and a main OR a main and a dessert), one large bottle of still / sparkling water and a warm drink of your choice.  Please just keep in mind that there are other exciting estates that we can include on the Cape Gourmet Delights Tour if we have to change the itinerary for whatever reason. Now, more about the fabulous Cape Gourmet Delights Tour.

Our first stop in the Gourmet Tour is at the beautiful Moreson Wine Estate. Moreson’s Charcuterie and wine tasting is their own twist on novel wine tasting. Stretch out at the Farm Grocer bar counter while you sample a range of Moreson wines, each individually paired with mouth watering yummy homemade charcuterie. You get to experience two different wine and food pairings at Moreson as part of the Cape Gourmet Delights Tour. We prefer to keep at least one of them a secret.

Our next stop will be at the Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate where you will enjoy a wine and food pairing in their modern tasting centre. This wine and food is a match made in heaven and is for many the highlight of the gourmet tour. During the winter months you will enjoy our wine and food pairing close to the crackling fireplace while during summer you will be able to tickle your taste buds in the air-conditioned tasting room and enjoy the view of the majestic mountains outside. The beautiful wine estate also offers visitors amazing gardens and buildings – making for excellent photo opportunities.

The gourmet pairing at this beautiful estate changes every couple of months to reflect the season and fresh products available.

Believe it or not, but by now it should be time for a spot of lunch (included in the Gourmet Tour).

After lunch, at the Lust Bistro, the day will come to a delightful end.
This Gourmet Tour has been described by many as the highlight of their trip to South Africa. The wine areas of the Cape Winelands are known as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa.

Time permitting we can also visit a local Franschhoek coffee roaster to see how they roast their delicious coffee beans. If we are lucky we might even be able to taste some of the coffees that they offer. This visit is however, strictly time permitting.

Please note that this tour can only be done Mondays to Fridays.
