Sindile at Shamwari Private Game Reserve | Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Shamwari incorporates seven lodges and one explorer camp; each one unique in its own essence. Lodges are designed in harmony with their surroundings where guests can experience nature in sublime comfort.
Sindile at Shamwari Private Game Reserve provides luxury tented accommodation within the wilderness. Named for the matriarch of Shamwari’s leopards, the camp mimics a solitary leopard’s sanctuary, blending with the surrounding bush while providing excellent vantages over the Bushman’s River and surrounding plains. Our rangers are experts at navigating the Shamwari terrain and are readily available to answer any questions you may have. If there is a certain species you’re hoping to spot, or an area you wish to visit, chat to your coordinator to make arrangements.
We do suggest mentioning any special requests you may have when you make your booking. That way, we can advise you on the ideal time of year to visit, which lodge to stay at, and make any other arrangements that might be needed.
Unfortunately, no children under the age of 4 are permitted on the game drives; however we can arrange a childminder at an additional cost.

In collaboration with the Born Free Foundation, the Big Cat Rescue and Education Centres are situated within our game reserve. They aim to draw attention to the plight of wild cats, confined in impoverished, captive environments throughout the world.
It’s the mission of The Born Free Foundation, founded by actress and conservationist Virginia McKenna and her late husband Bill Travers, to ‘Keep Wildlife in the Wild’. Both Shamwari and Born Free aim to promote conservation and protect these species and their habitat, whilst maintaining a compassionate approach to the welfare of animals. The rescue and education centres home rescued lions and leopards from across the world and aim to be an enlightening experience for all visitors.
The Born Free Foundation is a UK based wildlife charity organisation that rescues animals from captivity and gives them lifetime care in spacious sanctuaries. The charity protects threatened species including lions, elephants, tigers, gorillas, wolves, bears, marine turtles and much more in their natural habitat. Working with local communities Born Free finds humane solutions to help people and wildlife live together without conflict.
Since its inception in 1984, it has grown and been backed by celebrities, conservationists and passionate institutions worldwide, like Shamwari Private Game Reserve.
At Shamwari Private Game Reserve we’re passionate about the conservation of nature and the animals within the reserve. One of our endeavours includes the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which helps to rescue, rehabilitate and care for sick, injured, abandoned or orphaned animals under the care of our professional veterinary team. Once these animals have been nursed back to health, they are released back into their natural habitat.
Guests staying at Shamwari have the opportunity to visit the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
Shamwari partnered with Vulpro, which is the only vulture conservation organization of its kind on the continent, spearheading population restocking and supplementation to address the severe decline of African vulture species.
Vulpro @ Shamwari offers a safe, well-balanced ecosystem for both in-situ and ex-situ conservation programmes and provides financial support and sustainability. Importantly it limits risk because the largest captive breeding population of vultures isn’t concentrated in one location. In addition, Shamwari’s anti-poaching unit provides good security.
Guests staying at Shamwari have the opportunity to visit VulPro which is adjacent to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Tsitsikamma Village Inn | Stormsriver
This magical country hotel situated in the quaint village of Storms River has been hosting travellers since 1841. The privately owned and managed country hotel consists of 49 village-style rooms, where each cottage is individually decorated to match its specific colonial building style.
The main building, which traces its roots back to 1845, has a spacious dining room, incorporating the De Oude Martha Restaurant, Hunters Pub, Cafe Bacchus and Guest Lounge.
Take a journey back in time at our Marilyn’s 60s Diner, a tribute to Marilyn and Elvis with its collection of memorabilia and a menu to match. Right next door, at Tsitsikamma Microbrewery, enjoy one of our selection of Ales, or choose from a variety of other South African craft beers.
The hotel is a perfect base to explore the natural beauty and activities of the Tsitsikamma area, close to the Tsitsikamma National Park.
The only full service hotel in the area. The Hotel is renowned for its good food, old world charm and has been a favourite for many a year!
The Premier Rooms are comprised of 4 rooms in De Oude Pastorie, and 2 rooms in the Albert and Victoria Honeymoon Cottage. De Oude Pastorie rooms are all double story, and have the familiar sash windows and flat-roofed feature of most Southern Cape villages.
The Village Square offers beautifully decorated rooms, each unique in design. The building resembles traditional building styles of the early Cape Colon, and the rooms are decorated accordingly. These rooms include Hanover, Drostdy, Ikaya, Arnistin and the Victorian Cottages.
The beautifully decorated Barn rooms date back to the 1800’s, and were originally used as stables for travelers’ horses while journeying along the Garden Route. The rooms were converted into the cosy bedrooms they are now in 1996, and offer beautiful views during your stay.
Our Log Rooms are Swiss-style, double story chalets built in 1988. The building is situated around a fountain, and offers beautiful views from all rooms. We believe these rooms provide an experience that emphasises on the wood-cutting legacy Tsitsikamma is so proud of.

Here at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge, we offer Bush Safaris not only to our residents but to the public as well.
“We call it Bush Safaris, as our guides are trained to not only educate our guests on our wide variety of animals, but also about our bird and plant species..”
– Andries van Schalkwyk | Managing Director
During our bush safaris ( game drives ), you can expect to experience true Karoo vegetation from our open game viewing vehicles. Our wide range of animals includes Hippo, Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, Buffalo, Springbok, and much more. The duration of our bush safaris is ± 2 hours. About midway through the safari, there is a refreshment break at one of our scenic lookout points. These offer 360° panoramic views of the area as well as the Swartberg Mountains.
Duration: 2 Hours
None of our elephants have been taken from the wild for captivity. The three elephants were orphaned when the adults were poached. Our elephants come from circumstances that if we did not intervene they would not be alive today. We did not choose this life for them but we rather chose to give them the best possible life within our means with the best possible love and care. All our elephant excursions have a most informative educational approach.
We are fortunate that they ended up here at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge as they are true gentle giants and have great personalities. Elephants are very affectionate and caring animals.
An early booking for an Elephant Experience is essential as our elephants are very popular. Clients should arrive 15 minutes prior to activity. Activity will automatically be cancelled if clients arrive 15 minutes after booked time and will have to wait for the next time slot. You are welcome to ask our elephant guides as many questions as you like.
Feeding: (Every hour from 08h00 to 16h00)
With this experience you get the opportunity to be educated on these magnificent animals while having the chance to feed then as well.
Duration: 30 - 45 min

At Buffelsdrift Game Lodge we offer night drives not only to our residents but to the public as well. A night drive is a safari that happens at night with the help of powerful spotlights to see the different animals. The two-hour night drive offers guest an opportunity to spot the elusive “Shy five” of Buffelsdrift Game Lodge – caracal, genet, porcupine, aardvark and aardwolf. The open game drive safari vehicle offers to witness other wildlife species such as hippo’s grazing, Giraffes, Buffalo, Cape Mountain Zebra, Sable, Eland and much more. About midway through the night drive, there is a refreshment break where you can enjoy the renowned Klein Karoo night skies. Buffelsdrift Game Lodge invites you to witness the incredible wild habituated Meerkats emerging out of their burrows at dawn, just in time to soak up the sun before they head about their daily activities.
The Meerkat Safaris at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge will bring you up close to these amazing animals. A trained ranger will meet our guests in the Lookout Lounge, where they will enjoy a warm cup of coffee and rusks, before heading to the Safari vehicle to go to the Meerkat burrows. On the way to the burrows guests are usually lucky to spot some of the 22 species of animals on the reserve.
The guests remain on the vehicle while waiting for the Meerkats to emerge at the break of dawn. The ranger will educate the guests on all the interesting facts and behavior throughout the experience.
Guests will be transported in a game vehicle to the 5ha lion enclosure where they will see our lions (Shumba, Tonga and Safia) close-up from the elevated view point. A trained game ranger will feed the lions while guests view them. It is advisable to have a camera at hand. Furthermore, the game ranger will fully inform the guests regarding important aspects of lions in general.
General Guidelines:
– These are wild Lions and will not be touched or handled by humans, including the rangers.
– Maximum of 20 guests per Lion experience. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.
– Duration of the Lion viewing experience may vary depending on their behaviour (± 1-2 hours)
In April 2020, we introduced our South African cheetahs to our guests. Die Hel | Western Cape
“The Hell” is not as ominous as it sounds. This hidden valley was once home to a small Afrikaans community that lived in near isolation for over a century. Today, less than a handful of people live here permanently, but a guest house and farm stall accommodates visitors. Also called Gamkaskloof, Die Hel is known for its soaring summer temperatures, stark surroundings and quiet solitude. Every year a popular mountain bike race challenges competitors to ride to hell and back.

A South African grillroom, ROOI offers a menu sourced from both land and sea, transformed by fire, with a touch of local South African flavours and traditions.
ROOI is the Afrikaans word for ‘red’ (one of the twelve official languages of South Africa) and is a colour traditionally associated with power, vitality, life and fire. The theme of fire is prevalent throughout the space, even in the chosen floral motif, a pincushion protea. Proteas are known as the phoenix of the floral kingdom, due to their reliance on fire to stimulate regrowth and like the Protea, ROOI too harnesses the transformative power of fire.
An elegant contemporary space, the setting brings the outside world in with the inclusion of seven living trees and ‘horned’ seats (a nod towards Ankole cattle known for their long horns) to the design scape.
