As you travel eastward along the B8 highway, you'll pass through lush riverine landscapes, small villages, and glimpses of wildlife in the surrounding woodlands. Days 8 - 9: Okavango Panhandle

Departing from Divundu in the morning, you begin your journey southwest towards the Okavango Panhandle—an iconic gateway to the Okavango Delta. The drive itself is a visual treat, with the landscape gradually shifting from woodlands to lush riverine vegetation as you follow the path of the Kavango River. Once you’ve cleared customs and immigration at Mohembo, you enter Botswana and immediately feel the rhythm of a slower, wilder world. Crossing the border, you enter the Okavango Panhandle—an area known for its deep channels, papyrus-lined waterways, and abundant birdlife. Whether you're bound for a riverside lodge or a mokoro safari, this leg of the journey marks a dramatic transition from cultural exploration to untamed wilderness.

Expert tips

Border Formalities: The Mohembo crossing is generally quick and straightforward, but you’ll still need: A valid passport with at least 6 months before expiry. Your yellow fever certificate if you've traveled from a yellow fever zone (rare, but worth checking). You’ll be asked to step through a foot-and-mouth disinfection tray (basically, you’ll walk over a damp mat). Make sure you're wearing shoes you can easily clean—no flip-flops or fabric shoes that can soak up disinfectant. 🚙 After the Border: Once you're in Botswana, the nearest town is Shakawe (about 10–15 minutes’ drive). This is your last reliable place for an ATM, basic groceries, mobile data (BEMO, Mascom, or Orange), and fuel before heading into more remote areas. Stock up on: Snacks and bottled water (your guide will carry main supplies). Personal essentials (wet wipes, sunscreen, bug spray). A local SIM card if you want mobile reception (note: no signal in the bush!). 👣 What You Need to Do: Always stay with your guide in wildlife areas—they are there for your safety and the animals’. Do not bring fresh meat or unprocessed animal products across the border due to veterinary controls. Your guide will handle food. Listen to your guide’s safety briefings—they’ll explain camp etiquette, animal safety, and bush procedures. Botswana is incredibly well-run for safaris and your guide will handle most of the practicalities—but a little preparation on your part makes the whole experience smoother and more immersive.

Day 10: Maun

Today you continue your journey to Maun, a lively city on the edge of the Okavango Delta. This route offers you the opportunity to experience diverse landscapes, from riverbanks to open savannah, and is a popular choice for travelers looking to discover the diversity of this region.
