Expert tips:

A night tour in the wild is a unique experience that allows you to discover wildlife from a different perspective. However, to ensure that this exploration respects the well-being of animals, it's essential to be properly equipped and follow certain guidelines.

Essential gear for a respectful night tour

  1. Headlamp with red or green filter: To minimize disturbance to animals, it’s recommended to use a headlamp with a red or green filter. These lights are less harsh on the eyes of nocturnal animals and won’t frighten them as much as white light.

  2. Dark and discreet clothing: Wear dark-colored clothing to avoid drawing attention. Comfortable attire suited to the weather conditions will help you move quietly and discreetly.

  3. Quiet and non-slip footwear: Choose soft, quiet shoes that reduce the noise of your footsteps. This prevents stressing the animals and allows you to observe their natural behavior.

  4. Night vision binoculars: If possible, bring binoculars adapted for night observation. They will enable you to watch animals from a distance without getting too close, limiting any disturbance.

  5. Camera with infrared flash or No Flash: If you plan to take photos, use a camera equipped with an infrared flash, or ideally, take photos without a flash. Flash can blind animals and disrupt their nighttime activities.

Guidelines for animal well-being

  • Stay Quiet and Discreet: Speak softly, walk slowly, and avoid sudden movements. Silence is key to observing animals without scaring them.

  • Respect Distances: Never approach animals too closely. Use your binoculars to observe them from a safe distance that doesn’t compromise their safety or peace.

  • Do Not Feed the Animals: While it may seem harmless, feeding animals can alter their natural behavior and diet, which can harm their health.

  • Follow the Guide’s Instructions: If you’re accompanied by a guide, always follow their recommendations. They are trained to minimize human impact on the natural environment.

By respecting these guidelines and using the appropriate gear, your night tour will not only be rich in discoveries but also respectful of the delicate balance of nature. You’ll be able to fully enjoy the experience while contributing to the protection and well-being of the animals you’re there to observe.

Day 13

Akanin'ny Nofy Reserve

Day notes

Akanin'ny Nofy, literally “Dream Nest”, is an inspiring name that stimulates the imagination. Nature lovers will discover wonders to match their expectations.

In the morning, visit the Palmarium Reserve. This natural setting, covering some 50 hectares, reveals the full beauty of Madagascar's flora and fauna. You'll find a variety of endemic lemur species, including the famous Maki, symbol of the island, as well as the Aye-Aye, Sifaka and Indri Indri. For a close-up look at the reserve's lemurs, a visit to the Palmarium is a must. This thirty-hectare site owes its name to the 100,000 palm trees it houses, including endemic and rare species such as Dypsis, Orania and Lemurophoenix. Passionate guides will be delighted to accompany you on your exploration, providing detailed information on every species, from lemurs and palms to orchids, carnivorous plants and much more.

In the afternoon, visit the Vohibola Reserve, one of the last vestiges of the island's coastal forests, a unique and fragile ecosystem. You'll discover a multitude of endemic plants, some with medicinal properties known for centuries to local communities. The reserve is also a sanctuary for several species of rare birds and lemurs, offering a unique opportunity to observe these creatures in their natural habitat. However, this precious reserve is threatened by several alarming factors. Deforestation, mainly due to illegal logging, is gradually reducing the forest cover, endangering the species that live there. Poaching, illegal hunting and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources further exacerbate the situation.

Angélique Decampe, president of the association Razan'ny Vohibola, is an environmental rights activist who has been actively involved in protecting the Vohibola forest, often at great personal risk, for some twenty years.
