Expert tips:

Nakipelemoru manyatta

Traveling from Karenga in the direction of Kotido, you will see more and more people along the roadside wrapped in the traditional Karamojong blankets. Men wear typical hats, often with a feather on top, while women, elegantly walking with heavy goods on their head, have colourful beads around their neck.

As you arrive at the Nakipelemoru manyatta, the largest settlement of huts in East-Africa, you will instantly feel immersed in the daily life of an African village. Large herds of cows, sheep and goats graze in the fields, guarded by shepherds. The life of Karamojong is all about cattle: the more they own, the more important and respected they are. Should they want to get married, the dowry could be up to fifty cows per bride. For a long time the Karamojong tribe was notorious for the violent cattle raids in the area. However, in recent years the warriors surrendered their weapons and since then they live in peace with their neighbours.

Together with a local guide, you will visit one of the families and learn about their habits and lifestyle. Once you have crouched through the very low entrance, you can have a look around in their banda. You can see the cow skins on the floor, used as mattresses, all kind of cutlery hanging on the wooden beams and sometimes even a modern bicycle.

A short hike up the hill will give you the perfect overview of the entire manyatta.

When you plan your visit on a Sunday, you can even enjoy the traditional singing and dancing.

Day 8

Kidepo Valley National Park

Day notes

At 06.00 you leave in the direction of Mount Morungule where the hike starts. Around 8.00 am you begin with the steep wall walk up, with good weather it is possible to be at the top at 11.30 and enjoy the beautiful view. After lunch, you will go down again and continue towards Kotido. You will notice that the landscape is slowly changing. This part of Uganda is much drier and warmer. You immediately will notice that in the environment.

On the way from the ferry to the Delta you will also be able to spot many wild animals, especially the Giraffe is very common here. Murchison falls even has the largest population of Rothschild giraffes in the world. At 2 o'clock the boat trip starts on the Nile, to the foot of the Murchison Falls. This boat trip takes about 3 hours, and during this tour, you will see a lot of wild animals, such as Hippos, Buffalo, Crocodiles and perhaps some Elephants. Day 18

Lake Mutanda

Day notes

Today is the day of the Gorilla tracking. After breakfast, you will meet the rangers at the rangers post for the briefing. After the briefing, the search begins for the Mountain Gorillas. Depending on the location of the Family you are going to visit, the trip may take a few hours. The landscape is mountainous, so it is advised to bring suitable walking shoes. After this exciting day and unique experience, it's time to relax at the lodge

Expert tips:

When you are with the gorillas:

  1. A 7 meter (21 feet) distance should tried to be observed at all times from the gorillas. The further back you are, the more relaxed the group will be.
  2. You must stay in tight group whey you are near the gorillas.
  3. Keep your voices down at all times. However, it is okay to ask the guide questions.
  4. Do not smoke, drink or eat when you are near the gorillas. Eating or drinking inevitably will increase the risk of food/drink morsels/droplets falling, which could increase the risk of transmission of diseases.
  5. Sometimes the gorillas charge. Follow the guides example (crouch down slowly, do not look the gorillas directly in the eyes and wait for the animals to pass). Do not attempt to run away because that will increase the risk.
  6. Flash photography is not permitted! When taking pictures move slowly and carefully.
  7. Do not touch the gorillas. They are wild animals.
  8. The maximum time you can spend with the gorillas is one hour. However, if the gorillas become agitated or nervous, the guide will finish the visit early.
  9. After the visit keep your voices down until you are 200 meters away from the gorillas.

General health rules:

Remember that mountain gorillas are very susceptible to human diseases. The following rules are ways to minimize the risk your visit might poses to them:

  1. Respect the limits imposed on the number of visitors allowed with the gorillas each day. This minimizes the risk of disease transmission and stress to the group.
  2. If you are feeling ill, or you are carrying a contagious disease, volunteer to stay behind. An alternate visit will be arranged for you, or you will be refunded your money.
  3. If you feel the urge to cough or sneeze when you are near the gorillas, please turn your head away and cover your nose and mouth in order to minimize the spread of bacteria or viruses.
  4. Always stay 7 meters (21 feet) away from the gorillas. This is to protect them from catching human diseases.
  5. Do not leave any rubbish (eg. food wrappers) in the park; foreign items can harbor diseases or other contaminants.
  6. If you need to go to the toilet while in the forest, please ask the guide to dig you a hole with his panga. Make sure the hole is 30 cm deep and fill it in when you are finished.

What to bring on your Gorilla Safari:

  1. Wear comfortable hiking shoes suitable for steep muddy slopes.
  2. Carry a packed lunch and enough drinking water.
  3. Carry rain gear, sunscreen lotion, a hat (as the weather is unpredictable) and insect repellent.
