Namibia is a country of contrasts. Today we barter the desert for the sea. We shall cross the Tropic of Capricorn and transverse both Gaub and Kuiseb passes, driving down to the dry river bed at the bottom of the Kuiseb Canyon before climbing up the other side, watching the spectacular desert landscape unfold before us. Having arrived at the coast, we make a stop in Walvis Bay to enjoy the view of flamingos and other birds in the lagoons and to visit the salt works. We enter the Etosha National Park and drive through the restricted “west Etosha” zone. West Etosha is a huge area that has been set aside for wildlife research and to allow the animals to breed without disturbance from game drive vehicles. With a special permit we are allowed to transit through this area of the park. However, our special permit does not allow us to leave the main road or to make too many stops along the way. We should be lucky to see many animals, including elephants and maybe both white and black rhinos and mountain zebras, as well as other species that usually do not occur in the main tourist areas of Etosha. We will also have a good chance to see black rhinos at the waterhole of Okaukuejo.
