Day 1: Mashatu Game Reserve

Sat. 4 May 2019

Make your way to Mashatu Tented Camp located in the Tuli Block in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, on the border of South Africa.

There are several ways to get here, please talk to us about any of the following options:

  • Self-drive or transfer (about 6 hours from Johannesburg)
  • Scheduled daily light aircraft from Johannesburg to Limpopo Valley Airfield (1hr30), departing at 12h00

You can drive to the border and transfer to camp, or if in a 4x4, drive to the camp or light aircraft transfers can be arranged.

Runners transferring from the border must be at the Pont Drift border post between 12h30 and 13h00 for the scheduled transfer at 13h00.

Tonight you will have a briefing on the routes that you will run over the next few days and how the trail run will be conducted and how to manage running in Big 5 territory. You can also find out more about the Mashatu Research Project which is the beneficiary of the run.

Expert tips

Notes for self-drive runners:

Please note that the South African police at Pont Drift Border Post will request sight of a certificate of registration in respect of all motor vehicles, even if only parking at the border post and not driving through the Limpopo River to Botswana.

This must include a proof of ownership of the vehicle, or letter of authority from the rental company in the case of rental cars or from the owner of the vehicle in the case of company vehicles or owners other than the driver, both giving the respective drivers permission to take the vehicle through the border post.

Notes for fly-in runners:

This departure is from Lanseria Airport.  Transport from OR Tambo International Airport is included when booking this light aircraft transfer.

  • Johannesburg/LVA 12h00/13h30
  • LVA/Johannesburg 13h30/14h00

The flight departs with a minimum of 2 passengers and there is a luggage restriction of 20kgs per person in total. All stowed luggage must be in soft-sided bags.

This morning your run takes you through another part of the reserve to run about 35km that will ultimately bring you to the main camp where you can relax by the pool.

A well-deserved massage has been included this afternoon and if you would like to enjoy an afternoon game drive this will also be available.
