PETRIFIED FOREST JOSÉ ORMACHEA

The José Ormachea Petrified Forest, located at approximately 40 kilometers south of the town of Sarmiento, Chubut, is a large reserve of petrified wood found in its natural state.

It is a 75 million year old forest originated during the Paleozoic Era. As a Nature Reserve today, its petrified trees constitute an interesting landscape of singular beauty that immerses those who contemplate it for the first time, into a world that is between magical and surreal.

The fossil remains of these trees cover the largest known area in the world. When observing the fragments scattered throughout the region, scholars agree that the forest had an abundance of trees, some of which were more than 100 meters tall.
