Foothill hikes through the yellow-wood forest, or climbing to the top of the mountain, are also popular. The camp is popular with birders because it provides easy access to the near-by Blouberg Reserve with its famous vulture colonies and an array of games. A short walk to beautiful rock pools for swimming is a wonderful summer refresher. Visitors interested in meeting the local community can join guides from the camp on an easy walk through the area, and meet the locals at nearby taverns. Nestled at the foot of the Luaname Mountains, Fundudzi Cultural Camp is in the heart of traditional Venda territory. Just above the village of Mukumbani, this is an ideal place from which to explore a region famed for its sacred places and traditional Venda arts and crafts. Visitors to Fundudzi have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a beautiful environment. In a hugely fertile valley with modern tea plantations, the real gems are the natural areas with forests, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. The area is well populated with rural villages and tourists will be spoilt for choice visiting crafters, manufacturers of Minwenda (traditional Venda clothing), Malungu (traditional beads) and Makunda (traditional bangles).
Interested in truly local art? Many artists, potters, and crafters work in the area.
For those wanting a closer understanding of some of the local rituals, a demonstration of the Domba Dance (python dance) can be pre-arranged for evening entertainment at Fundudzi. Fundudzi Cultural Camp has 5 stand-alone thatched rondavels, each with two ¾ beds, chairs, and a bedside stand. Ablutions are communal, with flush toilets, shower and basins.

On a high ridge above the Mutale River, the view from Mutale Falls allows you to see so far that ‘you can see tomorrow’. The wild and beautiful Makuya Reserve provides visitors to this safari camp with a rugged safari experience – and views that will never be forgotten. Mutale Falls in Makuya Reserve provides safari enthusiasts as a true opportunity to get away from it all. With a network of roads for 4×4 vehicles, visitors to this reserve can explore to their heart’s content, or visit viewing points over the Luvuvhu Gorge, and relax at the side of the Mutale River near the potholes and Mutale Falls. Facing the setting sun, guests have an extraordinary view of the Mutale River below, and a wilderness area of baobabs. Makuya Reserve is unfenced from Kruger National Park and is home to the Big 5, and especially well-known for magnificent birding. Close to Kruger’s Pafuri Gate, visitors can also use Mutale Falls to access the famous Pafuri Drive along the Luvuvhu River for stunning game viewing experiences. Baleni is situated near the banks of the Klein Letaba River, on land belonging to the Mahumani Traditional Authority. Staff from Baleni can take guests for a walk down to a geothermal hot spring – the only undeveloped hot spring in Southern Africa. Maintaining a water temperature of around 42 degrees, this spring is a sacred site for the local Tsonga community. Your guide will explain the spiritual significance of the spring, and educate you in the expected terminologies and behaviors for visitors. After washing away your bad luck in the spring, your walk can continue to the nearby Ka Mukhulu – another interesting geological formation.
During the winter months, guests can watch local ladies making salt from the crystals that are deposited from the Soutini spring. This is an ancient skill and of important economic value to the people of the area. (Salt-making demonstrations can be arranged for a fee at any time of the year – please pre-book.) In addition, with prior arrangement, guests can do a trip into the local village to meet crafters and residents of the area. Baleni Cultural Camp has 5 stand-alone thatched rondavels, each with two ¾ beds, chairs, and a bedside stand. Ablutions are communal, with flush toilets, shower, and basins.
