Lion Sands River Lodge | Sabi Sand Nature Reserve
Lion Sands River Lodge is situated in the Lion Sands Game Reserve – one of Africa’s truly unspoiled wilderness areas, where the private Sabi Sand Game Reserve meets the world-renowned Kruger National Park. The lodge is the Eden of the More family’s youth and the first Lion Sands’ lodge to welcome guests, who between visits have married, become parents, and whose children have grown and now come to stay. In recent years the lodge has undergone a renovation that has introduced a new sense of brightness and space – where lovers and families come together and share extraordinary experiences. This is a place for making memories.

Africa has been called the greatest show on earth, and Lion Sands presents a safari that plays out like a highlights reel. Our reserve conserves 5 000ha (12 500ac) of a habitat that is home to the highest and most diverse concentration of wildlife in the southern hemisphere. You will see all of Africa’s iconic species – lion leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and zebra – along with a supporting cast of no less intriguing 137 mammal species and over 450 varieties of bird. Our safaris present an adventure that is wild, and then some!
Being entirely private, Lion Sands offers you an intimate safari experience. With only six guests to a game viewer and exclusive traversing on our reserve, you’ll have minimal encounters with other people. Though compelling sightings do attract more attention, the number of vehicles here is also limited. This ensures the animals aren’t put under stress and you are able to spend more time with them, observing their natural behaviour. While you are out exploring, you will by no means be roughing it. Your game viewer has cushioned bucket seats, waterproof device holders, blankets and ponchos – and stops off in a scenic spot for drinks and snacks.
These are our after-breakfast walks on the wild side. For those who wish to experience the bush, not just observe it, there is no better guided excursion. You are dropped in the thick of things and all five senses engage… Feel the scrub crunch beneath your feet, touch a velvety acacia seed pod, hear the crack of a branch indicating you are not alone, and spot the game appear just metres off – exhilarating! This is also a wonderful opportunity to encounter the smaller creatures, often missed on safari vehicles, and to discover more about the reserve’s plants – many with fascinating medicinal properties and traditional uses.
The African landscape stretches as far as the eye can see at Lion Sands, and we knew we had to find a special place to capture and enjoy its vastness and splendour. Guy Aubrey Chalkley once set up camp in a majestic centuries old Leadwood Tree to escape predators roaming the plains below.
We decided that this would be the ideal place to build the ultimate bush bedroom, the Chalkley Treehouse. The treehouse is a secure and lavish platform under the African stars, with all the comforts that a guest can experience at a five star safari lodge.
We take our guests to the tree house at sunset, where drinks and a scrumptious picnic dinner await them. The hours of African dusk can be enjoyed relaxing and absorbing the vastness of the bushveld as it transforms from day to night, before turning in for slumber beneath the incredible night sky.
Make your way through rows of magnificent white boulders and across a small drawbridge, and you will find Africa opening up in front if you. Set amid the pure and untouched wild, you will be surrounded by African bush and uninhibited wildlife at its best.
The Kingston Treehouse is constructed entirely from wood and glass, with contemporary décor in understated hues of greys, white, black and purple. No matter what the weather has in store, you will have a safe and luxurious setting with a unique window to enjoy the ever-changing views. In fact, we defy you to find two identical African sunsets.
The 60m2 Treehouse is situated about 5 minutes from the main lodge, and you will have radio contact with the rangers, should you choose to. You will also find some cellphone reception; but don’t expect any wi-fi in the bush. Kingston is equipped with full bathroom and shower facilities, and Africology products to complete your sensory experience.
Enjoy a dinner of tapas or a full meal with Champagne, under the splendor of an African starlit sky.
From boma feasts to safari refreshment stops, dining promises to be a highlight – for all our guests, with any dietary requirement, including kosher, catered for. Our chefs transform local recipes into contemporary dishes, giving you a taste for Southern Africa. Paired with premium wines from the Cape, dining becomes an experience. Our wine tastings are also a favourite of connoisseurs and dabblers, alike.
Between game drives, find spaces to simply breathe. Lion Sands' wellness experiences restore what daily life depletes - deep sleep returns, tension melts away, and time slows enough to reconnect with yourself. Massage therapies work through safari-tired muscles to the soundtrack of birdsong drifting through open windows. Facials and deeply hydrating body treatments use TheraNaka™ and TheraVine™ products infused with African shea butter, CBD oil, and Pinotage botanicals. Hand and foot rituals bring softness after days in open safari vehicles. Couples enjoy shared spa experiences whilst the wilderness continues just beyond your treatment room. All treatments feature indigenous ingredients that nourish skin left dry by bush air. Exfoliation rituals leave you smooth and radiant, combining luxury with plants that have thrived in this landscape for millennia - shea butter, healing botanicals, restorative oils that restore and rejuvenate.
Lion Sands together with More Community Trust assists our local Huntington and Justicia B villages, and you can get involved, too. Take a community tour, the proceeds of which go to our development projects here, or roll up your sleeves to help out through our Get Your Hands Dirty initiatives.
These centre on education, infrastructure, health and environment, and you can choose the area best suited to your skills and interest. These are extraordinary social experiences that bring you to the heart of Southern Africa to make your own and others’ dreams come true.

Trade the rhythm of the road for the gentle glide of water. This river-based experience offers a different perspective on &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, where movement slows and detail comes into focus. A short drive leads to the Mzinene River’s edge, where you step aboard and begin a peaceful journey along this reed-lined river. Fever trees arch overhead, kingfishers dart across the surface, and the landscape closes in, drawing your attention to the finer details often missed on land. Whether in the calm of early morning or the golden fade of afternoon, the experience unfolds intimately, attuned to a more subtle side of Phinda.
Enjoy early morning and late afternoon game drives that continue after nightfall. andBeyond’s professionally trained guides will ask you about your favourite wildlife and will do their best to ensure that your preferences are met, whether it is tracking a particular species or spending more time enjoying each sighting and getting to know the habits of the animals. They will also tell you about the vegetation of the region and will explain the behaviour of the animals that you come across. In some cases, the guides will be able to identify individual animals and let you know about their history and habits.
andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve is renowned for its exceptional sightings of the elusive cheetah and the rare black rhino, as well as the Big Five. There is also a number of resident lion prides and rangers will do their best to provide you with an exceptional sighting of all of these animals.
Accompanied by your ranger, enjoy an interpretive nature walk, around the lodge, where you learn more about the intricacies of the African bush, from discovering fascinating flora and reading animal tracks with your guide to meeting smaller wildlife up-close. Experience the thrill of tracking animals on foot, accompanied by an armed specialist ranger and tracker team. Engage all your sense as you discover a world where each sound, scent and bent blade of grass has a meaning.
Step into a private safari vehicle, specially equipped with high-definition thermal imaging and infrared cameras. As night falls across the reserve, live footage streams onto four screen monitors (one for each row), revealing the movements, interactions and surprises of the wild in real time — often invisible to the naked eye. Listen closely, too: wireless headsets amplify the sounds of the night, from the call of a distant hyena to the rustle of a foraging porcupine.
Guided by an expert ranger, a skilled tracker and a specialist cameraman, this after-dark experience offers a rare perspective on wildlife behaviour and conservation technology. It’s quiet, immersive, and deeply intimate — an entirely new way to experience the thrill of the wild after dark.
Pangolins are the most poached mammal on the planet. They are animals in the shadowlands of extinction. Participate in our one-of-its-kind Pangolin conservation experience, and support us in this groundbreaking initiative to re-establish Temminck’s [ground] pangolin in a region where they have gone locally extinct. Intensive monitoring, using VHF and GSM/UHF tracking tags, is a core element of this project. Travel with our specialist conservation team as they locate the animal, replace the GSM/UHF tag, do general health checks, and gather crucial data.
Your Experience:
Participate in this privately guided pangolin research and monitoring experience at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, and you’ll be supporting the conservation of the world’s most trafficked mammal. In this interpretive and exclusive activity, guests will join a researcher as he (or she) locates one of the pangolins that has been reintroduced to the reserve. They will have the rare opportunity to observe the unique features and remarkable adaptations of these gentle creatures first hand as our researcher does a general health check, and downloads critical research data from the UHF tag attached to each pangolin.
This exclusive experience is available at an additional cost and is subject to availability. It will take place in the afternoon or evening in winter, or at night in summer. Guests need to be 16 years or older to participate. If less than 6 guests, a private vehicle needs to be booked. Guests will unfortunately not be allowed to touch or handle the animals.

Slip on a pair of walking shoes and spend the morning with an expert ranger and tracker to find the rare and endangered black rhino on foot. Follow rhino tracks, recognise rhino middens and scratching posts, and read the signs of the bush in search of your quarry.
For four months during the southern hemisphere summer, the enormous leatherback and loggerhead turtles emerge from the Indian Ocean at Sodwana Bay to lay their precious eggs in the sand. As the moon rises over the ocean, excitement grows as you drive along the deserted coastline in search of fresh turtle tracks that emerge from the ocean and travel along the beach in search of a suitable nesting site. Begin the day with a complimentary morning yoga session overlooking the Indian Ocean. Held daily on Sala Beach House’s ocean-facing deck, these gentle guided classes provide an opportunity to stretch, breathe and reconnect while embracing the peaceful rhythm of the coast.
Suitable for all experience levels, the sessions focus on mindful movement, flexibility and relaxation, creating a balanced start to the day. The combination of fresh sea air, panoramic ocean views and the soothing sound of the waves makes this a memorable part of the Sala experience.
Morning yoga is complimentary for resident guests. Advance booking is essential and spaces are limited.
The Spa at Sala Beach House is a tranquil sanctuary dedicated to rest, renewal and holistic wellbeing. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the spa offers a peaceful environment where guests can slow down, reconnect and embrace the restorative rhythm of the coast.
The treatment menu combines therapeutic body treatments, massages, facials and beauty therapies delivered by skilled therapists using premium African skincare brand Terres d’Afrique and advanced skincare solutions from QMS Medicosmetics. Signature treatments draw inspiration from Africa’s rich botanical heritage, while results-driven facials and wellness therapies are tailored to individual needs.
Wellness extends beyond the treatment room, with ocean-facing yoga, guided breathwork, meditation and seasonal wellness experiences designed to nurture both body and mind. The calming sound of the ocean, fresh sea air and intimate setting enhance the sense of relaxation and renewal.
Whether enjoyed as part of a longer wellness retreat or simply as a restorative addition to a beach holiday, the spa offers guests a space to pause, recharge and reconnect with themselves in one of South Africa’s most beautiful coastal settings.
KwaZulu Natal is home to South Africa’s most prestigious golf courses and country clubs.
With these fine golfing destinations being located in panoramic locations along the
North Coast, it’s no wonder the region remains a popular golfing destination.

newly-built Sala Beach House is the perfect home-away-from-home for golfers of all
handicaps who wish to explore the various golf courses in and around the Dolphin
Coast.

Sala Beach Restaurant
Dining at Sala Beach House is relaxed, personal and inspired by the flavours of the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. Rather than a traditional restaurant experience, meals are tailored around the weather, the occasion and the preferences of each guest, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a private beach home than a hotel.
The menu celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local producers wherever possible, with influences drawn from African, Indian and European culinary traditions. Fresh seafood, vibrant flavours and carefully crafted dishes reflect the diversity of the region.
Dining takes place throughout the property. Breakfast may be served on the ocean terrace overlooking the Indian Ocean, lunch beside the pool, or dinner in the sheltered courtyard beneath the stars. Indoor dining is also available, providing a warm and elegant setting when preferred.
Complemented by a carefully curated wine list featuring some of South Africa’s leading estates, dining at Sala is defined by exceptional ingredients, warm hospitality and a memorable oceanfront setting.
