CHILE: EXTREME TO EXTREME

At Alto Atacama, guests are offered the choice between 2 half day or one full day tour each day. Below a (non-exhaustive) list of examples, showing you the wide range of activities that are offered.

Excursions by vehicle

• Likanantai Culture Tour: After a short walk from the hotel to Pukara de Quitor, we will drive to the historic old town of San Pedro. There, we will stroll around the picturesque town, visit the church and the highly respected museum. We then drive to the archealogical ruins of Tulor – a 2800 year old settlement – visiting a variety of ancient villages along the way.        
• Sunset at Moon Valley: A 20 minute drive brings us to the spectacular Moon Valley. This is one of the most famous national parks in Chile and for good reason. The enormous sand dunes and dramatic rock formations create a stunning lunar landscape born of land lifts and centuries of erosion. The sunsets here are extraordinary and no visit to San Pedro is complete without an trip to the Moon Valley to watch the sun go down.   
• Tara Salt Flats: From the hotel, we drive towards the Andean cordillera. The journey takes us through the wonderful meadows of Quepiaco where you can also see the Pakana Monks, incredible rock formations created by years or erosion. We will have a buffet lunch at the salt flats while enjoying the local flora and fauna, before returning to the hotel. 

Trekking 

• Quezala Gorge: We drive south taking the east flank of the Atacama salt flat, the town of Talabre is where we start our trek. Located at the footsteps of the active Lascar volcano Talabre is a fine example of an altiplanic village, defying ages & ashes. The trek follows the river that carves the beaut i ful Quezala Gorge.
• Los Colorados: From the hotel, we take a short drive along the ancient road which crosses the Cordillera de la Sal. From here, we begin a delightful trek along the top of the cordillera which provides panaromic views of San Pedro, the oasis, the salt flats and the snowcapped Andean mountains. We descend via the dunes of Moon Valley.

Cycling

• Inca Pass: From Alto Atacama, we cycle up to the cordillera until we reach a old tunnel that cuts though the cordillera. The tunnel is an amazing feat of engineering built by the Chilean goverment early in the XX century to reduce travelling times from the Andes to the sea. We pass through the tunnel and return to the hotel via Mars Valley.
• Desert Valley: We cycle towards Mars Valley and climb up to the Cordillera viewpoint. From here, you can see across the oasis and the salt flats to the snowcapped Andes. On our way back to the hotel, we pass through the famous Moon Valley.

We will navigate across Señoret Channel towards Bahia Esperanza Park (a Patagonian ranch) where we will take our bicycles to start a circular ride towards horse trails and open country meadows. We will enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the fjords and the austral mountains that surround us, and also we will pass through Nothofagus forests.

Then, we will descend for the low grounds of the Estancia on the shores of the fjords where we can admire an array of birds from the zone.

A horseback riding excursion that lasts approximately 2 hours while riding through valleys, knolls, lenga and nirre forests trails.

We will ride through viewpoints and prehistoric sites that remain from glacier formations. We will also reach Benitez Hill and observe imposing austral birds flying over it.

What’s worthwhile is often difficult, and this challenging climb rewards adventurers with jaw-dropping views of deep-blue lakes, the Paine massif, and the vast expanse of the Patagonian steppe.

We begin in the flatlands near El Bote Bay, steadily increasing our altitude as we ascend the slope of Castillo Mountain. After marveling at our panoramic prize at the peak, we’ll descend through forests on our way back to our vehicle.

The harvest season at the vineyard starts in April and extends up to May. This tour takes place at night. Guests are invited to the vineyard to pick the grapes and then they are guided to the winery to see the hole selection and wine making process. Finally there is a grape juice tasting to learn about the fermenta-tion stages. This activity is guided by our Experience Concierges.

The purpose is to learn about chocolate tasting and then discover about wine and chocolate pairing. Extra charges apply.

Cooking class led by the Chef. Guests will receive the apron they use with the VIK logo as a complimentary gift. Extra charges apply.

Those seeking to take their wellness experience outdoors are encouraged to explore the many

hiking trails, take runs through the vineyard, horseback ride through the vines, or mountain bike through the vineyard valleys, investigating the many beautiful treasures nestled within the destination. The weather at VIK is so good almost all year around making outdoor experiences most appreciated.

Your full day will commence with some active options of your choice; choose from trekking, a bike ride, or horseback riding.

Your day will end with an excursion at the winery for a guided, private visit. In the tasting room, you can try a range of Vik’s wines, in the company of an expert who will teach you how to discover the soul of their wines.

HARVEST EXPERIENCE

The harvest season at the vineyard starts in April and extends up to May.

This tour takes place at night. Guests are invited to the vineyard to pick the grapes and then they
are guided to the winery to see the whole selection and wine making process. Finally, there is a grape juice tasting to learn about the fermentation stages.

This activity is guided by our experienced concierges.

(EMPANADAS)

Cooking class led by the Chef. Guests will receive the apron they use with the VIK logo as a complimentary gift

This activity includes a visit to the vegetables garden where guests will be able to pick the
different ingredients that will later be used in a soups or pasta cooking class.

The purpose is to learn about chocolate tasting and then
discover about wine and chocolate pairing.

Preferably for wine experts since it is technical activity.

9 wines are to be tasted: 3 Cabernet Sauvignons (one for each climate area of the vineyard),
1 Cabernet Franc, 1 Merlot, 1 Syrah, 2 Carmeneres
from two different terroirs, plus the Vik 2010 Blend.

Table served Buffet lunch:

your choice of 2 main courses, accompanied by three side dishes at the center of the table
