The Cellars Hohenort | Cape Town

The Cellars Hotel is a gracious period hotel set in beautiful landscaped gardens in the historic Constantia Valley of Cape Town - the wine estate area of Cape Town on the slopes of Table Mountain. It's probably fair to say that the Cellars Hotel, (as the Cellars-Hohenhort is usually known), was the original country house hotel in South Africa and it remains the ultimate for romantic getaways. It backs onto the forested slopes of Table Mountain and offers stunning views over the vineyards of Constantia to False Bay.

The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel comprises two buildings, both filled with fine antiques and original art. The Cellars building was originally an 18th century Cape Dutch homestead on the Klaasenbosch wine estate whilst the Hohenort is a Victorian manor house with beautifully proportioned rooms, high ceilings and original features. It has two award-winning restaurants overseen by Cape Town's only Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef, Peter Tempelhoff. The Greenhouse is one of South Africa's top 10 restaurants. Here the cuisine focuses on South African ingredients with modern interpretations. The more relaxed Conservatory serves simple beautiful fare and a selection of Liz McGrath's favourite dishes. The Cellars even offers cooking mornings for those guests who are interested in learning more about Cape cuisine. Cellars Hotel has certainly kept up with the times - the stylish vibey cocktail bar provides a great counterpoint for the elegant sitting rooms.

The 48 rooms and suites of the Cellars Hotel - including the charming Dovecote Honeymoon Suite - are decorated with immaculate taste. Rooms in the Cellars building are more contemporary in style whilst the Hohenort rooms have retained their classical ambience. You may also like to consider the Madiba Suite which is a self-contained small villa with two bedrooms (and a smaller third bedroom adjoining it).

Outside the nine-acre spectacular garden of the Cellars Hotel is lovingly attended - with garden tours on offer if you are interested - with rose gardens leading into terraced shrubberies and mature woodland. These are probably the best hotel gardens in South Africa and certainly some of the finest gardens in Cape Town. Within these extensive gardens are two swimming pools, a Gary Player putting and chipping green, tennis court and the Fresh Wellness centre. Beyond lies a small vineyard to complete the country ambience.

The Marine | Hermanus

The Marine Hotel has a stunning cliff side location overlooking the bay. A path leads down to the crashing waves and it is an easy two- minute walk to the market square. Though a luxurious five star hotel, The Marine has relaxed contemporary décor, with much use of light and bright colours in the 45 bedrooms and suites. All bedrooms have private bathrooms, remote controlled colour television with satellite and integral radio, direct dial telephone, personal electronic safes and under floor heating. A sophisticated cocktail bar and a lounge offers wonderful seaviews. Here there's a small seafood deli for light meals. The Marine has two restaurants, one serving seafood in a vibrant contemporary setting and one more traditional focusing on haute cuisine. Other facilities include a heated courtyard pool with pool service, the Carchele Spa, and the Sun Lounge with nothing between you and the South Pole, other than 3,000 miles of ocean. The Marine has direct access to a tidal pool, where you can swim as close to 100m away from the whales.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve | Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

The malaria-free Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is around a three-hour scenic drive from Cape Town in the heart of the Little Karoo, along Route 62 – the world’s longest wine route. At the foot of the towering Warmwaterberg Mountains, Sanbona boasts 58 000 hectares of sculpted Cape Fold Mountains, wide-open Karoo plains, indigenous flora and fauna and rare examples of San rock art, some dating back more than 3 500 years.

Sanbona is also an ongoing conservation project that aims to restore the ecological balance in a landscape formed during cataclysmic times 350 million years ago. As part of our conservation efforts, we have reintroduced animals that once roamed the area freely, but were eradicated due to farming. The Big 5 and various other species such as the rare and endangered riverine rabbit, gemsbok, springbok, hartebeest, eland, kudu and zebra can now all be seen on Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

Immerse yourself in a landscape where the wildlife and natural landscape leave you truly captivated and transformed. Take a journey to the Western Cape’s Premier Wildlife Destination, more than a Big 5 wilderness reserve, it’s the vastness of the landscape and alluring stillness that makes Sanbona unforgettable.

The Plettenberg | Plettenberg Bay

The Plettenberg has one of the most idyllic settings in South Africa - on a rocky headland overlooking the rolling breakers of the Indian Ocean, Lookout Beach and Robberg Nature Reserve. Impeccable service, soft contemporary décor and gourmet cuisine at the Sand restaurant are the hallmarks of this luxury five star beach hotel in Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route.

The Plettenberg will suit many tastes as it has lost some of its starched formality and now embraces a more relaxed style of beach hotel, albeit still with understated elegance. Much of the Plettenberg has been opened up by the use of glass walls so that now from the restaurant, terrace, garden and pool deck, you can enjoy sightings of dolphins and whales in the bay below. The sitting rooms are still furnished in a rather grand, classical style whereas the new Sanbar is now distinctly funky and modern - a glass and leather concoction with sandstone walks and atmospheric lighting. Their acclaimed restaurant, The Sands, has a glass atrium leading out onto the garden giving some dinners an ocean view. It offers some of the best cuisine in Plettenberg Bay with a wine list and top sommelier to match it.

The 38 superbly furnished rooms and suites at The Plettenberg have a fresh modern décor and original South African art. Many have sea views and all offer underfloor heating, air-conditioning and minibar. There are two pools - the one that you see in all the pictures where the pool seems to disappear into the view beyond, and a second one for the Blue Wing. Beauty treatments available at the Carchele Spa, with its modern facilities. The Plettenberg is a Rélais & Chateaux member.

The Plettenberg has two villas next to the hotel - the two bedroomed Beach House and the three bedroom Lookout Villa which are ideal for families or friends. Though The Plettenberg doesn't take young children, that rule is relaxed for the luxurious villas.

The Beach House is decorated in soft creams and blues with bleached wooden floors, with two en-suite bedrooms, large sitting room with fireplace, dining room and smallish kitchen. The main bedroom leads onto a sundeck and plunge pool, with spectacular views of the bay and mountains. The Lookout Villa is a contemporary beach house which enjoys a view of magical sunrises, whales breaching in the winter months, and pods of dolphins rejoicing the whole year round. Gentle sandy and ocean colours with a mix of textures and lighting create a warm and relaxing atmosphere.
