The Complete Sable Sands Experience
The Sable Sand Safari Experience consists of safaris in the Sable Sands private concession, neighbouring estate and into the Famous Hwange National Park; the safari planning is entirely at the expert discretion of the safari guides who decide the best routes to take depending on animal movement and participating guests.
Sable Sands is situated on a private concession 12km from the the park and 17 km from the main road and rural communities, in the specially created 'buffer zone'. The National Park is not fenced, therefore, all animals wander freely through the Park and the concession.
On a morning or an afternoon safari on the Sable Sands and neighboring concessions, you may encounter and be surrounded by the large population of the very special 'Presidential Elephants' whilst learning about their family structures and behaviours.
The area is also home to large herds of up buffalo, which can have up to 800 beasts.
Other beautiful sightings include zebra, giraffe, antelope, jackals, warthogs not forgetting vast and stunning species of birds. If you are lucky you might even spot lion, cheetah, African wild dog and sable antelope.
The guides have a wealth of knowledge to share and guests are encouraged to ask as many questions as possible. There might even be a stop at Acacia Grove, which is charming piece of land along the vlei, scattered with old dead acacias and teaks; here one can watch mischievous baboons playing with and teasing each other in this their very special jungle gym. As the drives are conducted on private property, a safari on the concession is always a special experience.
The safari in the Hwange National Park also starts with a drive through private concessions so it may take longer than an hour to get to the Park entrance (12 km) where guests register and pay entrance fees, all depending on the sightings along the way.
Covering an area of over 14,000 sq km (half the size of Belgium) the Park is Zimbabwe's largest National Park and home to over 350 bird and more than 100 mammal species. The Park is dappled with waterholes and has hidden picnic spots and viewing platforms. Dirt roads meander through the ever-changing landscape, from dense teak forests to jaw-dropping open vleis and acacia groves. Guests can take a short recess while soaking in the pristine splendour of the grassy plains and Kalahari sandveld. The Park is Wild & Beautiful, safaris here offer an incredible and unique opportunity to connect with vast expanses of pure unspoilt nature.
While safaris are the activities that are offered by the lodge, at Sable Sands guests are invited to just step out of their daily zone and take the time to go back to the basics, to listen, see, feel, smell, taste;
to de-digitalize their minds and be aware that a fire has to be made to heat up the water; to live in that 'Old Africa' - a mix of nature, wildlife, comfort, homemade wholesome meals, a big bonfire, the millions of stars blanketing the Lodge and the nightly sounds, your nightly lullaby.
The Sable Sands Experience leaves a Footprint on the Soul.
Wholesome, Home Cooked meals, prepared by Foodies & Co
The owners Marleen and Brian are both from a food background.
Brian previously worked in boutique hotels, outstanding lodges and event catering
and Marleen owned a very popular French restaurant in Utrecht, The Netherlands
which you had to book months in advance.
Needless to say, food is a passion of theirs.
The delicious and freshly prepared meals at Sable Sands are a contributing factor
to their consistently high reviews.
"We are a ‘Food Loving Home’, Vegan Friendly, and very passionate about cooking"
Where possible the local gardens supply the fresh herbs and produce, however,
due to the distance from the other suppliers (2.5 hours away) it is a good idea
to pre book any dietary wishes, so the chefs can prepare their special menu for you.
Don't be shy, Marleen eats a whole foods plant based diet herself!

Our qualified guides will take our 4 x 4 safari open vehicles into the Matobo National Park. Once in the Park we will pay for our walking permit of US 15.00 per person. From there we proceed to look for the rhino by vehicle. The vehicle is then parked close to where the rhino were last seen or where we can see fresh spoor, and we then continue on foot. Once we have sighted the rhino we accompany a team of National Parks officers up close and personal to get amazing pictures of the white rhino. US 60.00 per person excluding Park Fees and walking permit. It is truly an amazing experience! US 60.00 per person excluding Park Fees US 15.00 per person, and walking permit US 15.00 per person. Duration 3.5 hours approximately.
We normally do this activity in the afternoon. We drive from the lodge, and enter the Park from the Western side. We proceed to Nswatugi cave, which is one of the best quality San rock art sites in the Matobo National Park, and as a reminder is a World Heritage area. Once we have visited the cave, and chatted about the origin and meaning of the rock art paintings, we then proceed via Maleme Dam to Rhodes Grave. We try and get to Rhodes Grave / Worlds View around sunset, which makes for a wonderful historical tour, and even better sun downers with an incredible view! US 60.00 per person excluding Parkk fees US 15.00 per person, and Monument fees US 10.00 per person. Duration 4 hours approximately.
We have been supporting the Whitewaters Secondary School for close to 25 years now. It has been a remarkable project that has taken many different turns over the years. At one point in a severe drought we were feeding the entire school of 480 children lunch every day. Today we are sponsoring over 40 children's education every year through donor funding from our wonderful guests. In addition we are building a large computer block at the school which will have 24 laptop computers for the children to use. This through a Swedish donor Peter Karaszi. Thus guests can visit the school and join classes and chat to the staff, and then we also include a visit to one of the local Ndebele villages, as well as a visit to a traditional healer if requested. US 40.00 per person. No park fees. Duration 3 - 4 hours.
If you arrive late in the day, or perhaps just feel like having an easy afternoon, then the drive on the Big Cave property is well worth considering. We have quite a lot of plains game to see, 100 year old grain bins, as well as our own rock art hidden away! We normally land up having sun downers at either Leopard rock, or at Lightning rock. Both have magnificent views. Price US 20.00 per person. Duration 1.5 hours.
We offer a 1.5 hour walk on the property to view rock art, grain bins, balancing rocks and just the general fauna and flora of the Matobo area. The granite is incredibly easy to walk on, and makes for a very pleasant walk. US 10.00 per person. Duration 1.30 hours.
The Leopards Lair is our main dining area which incorporates a 25 meter boulder into the room. The room has a communal dining facility, lounge area, and the " on the rocks "bar. Guests can also access wi-fi in this area as well. Guests can also outside on the terrace if they prefer.
On the far eastern side of the property we have Leopard rock, which has an amazing view across to Rhodes Grave and Worlds view. Here we can offer bush breakfasts and bush dinners.

At over 5,000 km², Gonarezhou is the second largest National Park in Zimbabwe, cutting a swathe of sandstone cliffs, scrub and baobab trees along the country’s southeastern border with Mozambique. Largely undiscovered by the outside world, this striking land is one of the last great pristine wildernesses in Africa and takes in a huge diversity of habitats. Lions, cheetah, wild dogs, hyena, buffalo, hippo and giraffe can all be seen within the boundaries of Gonarezhou, but this country is known, first and foremost, as the Land of the Elephant. These massive, intelligent creatures are called Nzhou in Shona, and give their name to the National Park where they number in their thousands. Gonarezhou National Park is one of Africa's last remaining true pristine wilderness areas.

The intimate working relationship between the lodge and the local Shangaan community, makes a visit to Mahenye Village a uniquely rewarding cultural experience. This is the birthplace of the CAMPFIRE concept, which has since been replicated thousands of times around Africa. At it's core is the concept of "Community Led Conservation", and for his work setting up this initiative, and his ongoing commitment to conservation, Chilo Gorge Founder and Director, Clive Stockil, has won numerous international awards.

Trekking through a rugged landscape will lead you to a view point overlooking the Falls. As the water cascades over age-old rocks, take in the sights and satisfy your thirst with some well deserved refreshments.
The three major rivers, the Chilojo Cliffs and the vast water pans in the park support a rich variety of birdlife, including Kingfishers, Hornbills, Eagles and Raptors. Over 450 species have been recorded in and around Gonarezhou, making it one of Southern Africa's top birding destinations. The rivers attract many waterbirds from herons, storks and egrets to waders, African Skimmers and nesting Southern Carmine Bee-eaters. Purple-crested Turacos flash crimson through the denser riverine and Grey-headed, Brown-headed and Meyer’s Parrots squawk and shriek. The Chilojo Cliffs and the surrounding areas offer common sightings of Verreaux’s Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Black Storks, swifts and other raptors, including Bat Hawks and Taita Falcons. And the local Sacred Sand Forest also provides sightings of specials such as the Green Malkoha, Narina Trogon, Chestnut -fronted Helmet shrikes, and Square tailed Drongo.
