Trawl the Maasai market and discover a wide selection of handmade art, woodwork, textiles, clothing, jewellery and other beadwork — and take the opportunity to engage in some friendly bartering with the Maasai shopkeepers while you're at it.

Not forgetting the beginnings of this century-old estate, Legendary Lodge is surrounded by a working coffee plantation. Guests can spend a morning following a coffee bean from tree to cup: from the agriculture, to picking and roasting, to the making of that delicious blend many of us enjoy at home, as Tanzanian coffee is exported far and wide.

Very reliable, comfortable and well-maintained with charging facilities, fridge on board, photography stabilizing bean bags, vehicle recovery equipment, VHF Radio communication, specialized guide books, first aid kit, seatbelts, binoculars and last but not least, great guides who undergo bi-yearly training with our internal and external guide trainers.

A balloon safari offers an opportunity to see the wildlife areas from a unique perspective. Take in the wilderness below as you silently float over the vast plains (in whichever direction the wind takes you). Enjoy a game drive in one of the most game-rich areas in the world, the Ngorongoro Crater. Explore the vast 300km2 floor with an experienced guide and stop for lunch in a shady spot under the trees, maximising your time in this unforgettable landscape. Our seven-seater closed vehicles are fitted with power points so you’re able to charge your devices, as well as a fridge to keep your drinks deliciously frosty.

The Olmoti climb follows an ancient Maasai cattle trail through mountain forest, grasslands and rocky outcrops. Make the most of outstanding birding opportunities and the chance to see a vast array of butterfly species. At the top, you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the crater below.

Descend into the Empakaai crater accompanied by an NCA ranger and walk to the sparkling soda lake on the crater floor, famous for the pink flamingo that congregate on its shores. Because of the camp’s proximity to Empakaai, it is the only property that gives you the opportunity to make this a half-day excursion.

Guests will have the opportunity to join a Maasai staff member on a visit to a local community. Many of our staff members are drawn from the surrounding communities and are always eager to share their experiences, providing a richer understanding of the culture that defines this corner of East Africa. Guests will be invited to a Maasai boma to gain an insight into the traditional cattle-herding practices and school visits will also be available depending on the time of year.

Just because the sun has set, doesn’t mean that Tarangire goes to sleep. It becomes another world altogether bathed in the moonlight. It becomes a sensory experience and one that we highly recommend when staying with us at Lemala Mpingo Ridge. The star-studded skies, the gentle winds, shadows of elephants as they meander through the forests, the still silence broken by the lions roar and the shining eyes of curious wildlife peering at you as you drive by.

During the 2.5 hours canoe on Lake Manyara, you will get a unique perspective on Tanzanian wildlife and landscape. A well-trained guide will accompany the safari. He will ensure your safety and enjoyment while explaining more about the natural history of Manyara and its surroundings. The best way to make this activity work is to have your guide take you on a game drive as normal and meet our guides at the Endala picnic site either in the morning or the afternoon. Your guide can pick you up a few hours later at Msasa lake view point. Note - The water level in the lake needs to be sufficient.

You will be guided throughout, enjoying a cultural experience in the village of Mto wa Mbu on the border of Lake Manyara National Park, and home to banana plantations growing tens of varieties - including the sweetest red bananas! You will spend a few hours exploring the villages using the favoured mode of transport in the area - local tuk tuks - designed to give you a birds eye view as you meander around the narrow streets. You will see the rice fields and learn how it plays such a vital part in the food of Tanzanians, meet the Makonde carvers, watch the colourful Tinga Tinga painters - and try your hand yourself, visit a local primary school which we support, and before finishing up with a scrumptious Tanzanian lunch in the shade of the famous banana trees.

We believe that a visit to a Masai Boma should be an authentic cultural and educational experience based on mutual respect. Over the years we have built a close relationship with Chief Lubolo, a young visionary leader with a strong passion for education. He invites our guests to one of his bomas offering a memorable opportunity to interactively experience the Maasai way of life. During the excursion through the traditional boma guests will participate in various unique cultural activities, have the opportunity to sit and talk with Chief Lubolo and are encouraged to delve as deep into the experience as possible! There will also be a possibility to buy traditional beaded jewelry handmade by the women in the boma. A rare and authentic glimpse into the distinctive Maasai culture.
