Serian The Original | Mara North Conservancy

Serian was the first of Alex’s camps, and it perfectly captures the essence of its name: meaning ‘peaceful, calm, serene’ in the Masai language, it was designed to be a retreat from the bustle of contemporary life, and a chance to experience untamed Africa in traditional tented splendour.

It lies in the private Mara North Conservancy, and the beauty of this location is that only 10 other camps have access to it – so the feeling of having your own personal piece of Africa is a luxury that Serian has in spades.

Serian consists of five vast marquees perched on beautiful hardwood decking – one of which is a family suite. Each is unique in its own way, but all are furnished with elegant simplicity, complemented by countless thoughtful little personal touches that make it feel like home.

Serian's Nkorombo | Masai Mara National Reserve

Nkorombo is Serian’s tented mobile camp, set on a private riverside site in the Masai Mara Reserve. This snug little setup is chock-full of character with a view over the rushing Mara River, bursting with laughing hippo and languorous crocodile. Much like at Serian and Ngare Serian, life at Nkorombo is low-key and tranquil. Nestled among a stand of wild olive and orange croton, the camp is right next to a lively salt lick that regularly features black rhino, and lion and leopard on the lookout for kill… There is an abundance of prey in this area, and it’s the perfect spot for spectacular game viewing.

This one has more of a traditional tented feel than Serian and Ngare Serian – Nkorombo is thoroughly canvas, and touches like the time-honoured safari showers are a nod to the differences between fixed and mobile camps.

Designed to blend seamlessly into its stunning surrounds, it comprises five spacious ‘Selous style’ tents decked out in safari style of yore: leather, weathered wood, gauzy swathes of cotton, all lend accents to the essential, beautiful and comfortable style that defines Nkorombo. The en suite bathrooms blend wilderness and luxury, with flush toilets and bucket showers.

Serian's Serengeti South | Southern Serengeti

Serian’s Serengeti is a mobile camp, and from mid-December to May, it's set up on the southernmost extreme of the Serengeti’s short grass plains: prime position to spectate the wildebeest birthing season. Dramatic savannah storms sweep in nourishment and new life, and an innate primordial urge pulls the wildebeest to the site of their origins to reproduce. The plains literally come to life for the birthing season. Millions of gnus and zebra dominate the landscape, looking for the fresh green grass that follows the first rains – and to give birth to their young. This part of the world is remarkable for its sheer mind-boggling immensity: think unending savannah, massive vaulted skies – and 2 million wildebeest giving birth to 400,000 calves within a period of 3 to 4 weeks. It’s vastness and numbers on a scale that stretches the boundaries of the imagination. Ancient trails weave the migration past and through the camp. Given the sheer multitude of plains game and their brand new babies, the big cats are never far behind for an easy meal: this is especially prime cheetah country, and there is ample opportunity to watch these impressive predators in action. Birthing season aside, the camp has access to a million acres of a stunning acacia-dotted conservation area – an incredible environment for exploring. Just south is Lake Eyasi: home to Serian's Hadzabe and Ndorobo guides, who have centuries of bush craft at their fingertips. Being among these people and their ways is one of the best things about this spot: they can open your eyes to the secrets of this beautiful space.

Serian's Serengeti Mobile Kusini | Southern Serengeti

Serian’s Serengeti Mobile – as its name suggests – is a movable camp, and was created to make the most of the spectacular wildebeest migration. From December to May, it is perched on the edge of the short grass plains – a perfect vantage point over the vast space where the herds amass to give birth to their young. Nestled in a well-watered wood, ancient trails weave the migration right through camp.

Kusini is perfectly positioned to access the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, as well as the Serengeti National Park – two spectacular game-viewing areas encompassing high concentrations of cheetah, honey badger, golden-backed jackal and hyena, as well as a parade of predators feasting on the newborns.

Dramatic savannah storms sweep in nourishment and new life, and an innate primordial urge pulls the wildebeest to the site of their origins to reproduce. The plains literally come to life for the birthing season. Millions of wildebeest and zebra dominate the landscape, looking for the fresh green grass that follows the first rains – and to give birth to their young.
