Located deep within the park in an area renowned for Leopard, Kaingo Camp offers just 6 traditional brick and thatch rooms nestled discretely along the banks of the Luangwa River.
Large, gauzed windows and skylights offer uninterrupted views and a real sense of being immersed in nature. The spacious and beautifully styled rooms feature comfortable king size beds, solar powered charging points and fan, with the choice of indoor shower or indulgent outdoor bathtub. When not out on activity, guests can enjoy the sights and sounds of the bush from their shaded veranda, day bed or private viewing deck perched high above river.
At the heart of this friendly and relaxed camp, guests come together in our open sided lounge and dining area, sharing a drink over the thousand-year-old leadwood bar.
Our lower deck extends out over the Luangwa with large, comfy sofas for guests to curl up and enjoy the sights and sounds.
Two of our world-famous hides are just a short drive from the camp. The towering Elephant Hide, sited at an ancient elephant crossing point on the river, and the Hippo Hide. Built into the riverbank and offering a breath-taking, eye-level perspective of our resident hippo pod.

The traditional game drive allows you to explore further and get closer. Offered morning, afternoon and evening, each drive is typically 3.5 - 4 hours in duration and is led by your expert guide as well as a scout or spotter.
Like everything else at Shenton Safaris, Derek and Jules have worked alongside our guiding team to refine the experience, making each drive as comfortable and rewarding as possible.
Our custom built, open game viewers and extensive 120km of graded roads and viewing loops, offer a smooth drive with less of the bumping around.
We don’t put more than 4 guests on a vehicle to ensure everyone has plenty of space and excellent vantage points. Of course, if there are more of you in a group or family, each vehicle has 3 benches so there is plenty of room should you all want to head out together.
Photographers of all levels will appreciate our camera rests, super-clamp stabilisers, dust covers and our guides expertise in positioning, timing and helping you get the best possible photo opportunities.

In groups of no more than 6, your guide and an armed scout will safely escort you across a variety of terrains and beautiful walking routes, sharing the secrets of tracking wildlife, Luangwa’s extraordinary flora and the smaller creatures that might be overlooked on a vehicle.
Walks are offered in the morning and usually last 3 – 3.5 hours including a tea and biscuit break. Shorter, afternoon walks can also be arranged and combined with a hide visit or evening drive.

With uninterrupted views stretching across the riverfront, River Song offers a sensory-rich wilderness experience unlike any other.

Situated at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwamba rivers, Kaingo's Hippo Hide allows you to safely get close to hippo, crocodile, elephant and general game visiting the river.
Throughout the season, hundreds of hippos congregate here in both bachelor and breeding pods. Carved into the actual banks of the river, the Hippo Hide offers its hidden inhabitants a breath-taking, eye-level perspective of the action.
A perfect midday activity, the shaded hide offers comfortable temperatures and is a great place to relax after brunch. Alternatively, guests can choose to visit the hide during their morning activity or even leave camp a little earlier in the afternoon, taking a packed tea to enjoy from the hide before heading off on drive
The Hippo Hide is available for guests staying at Kaingo Camp
Our towering Elephant hide is nestled between the shade of Ebony and Sausage trees overlooking an ancient elephant crossing point on the river.
For hundreds of years elders have led juvenile members of the herd to this beautiful spot where they gather for drinking, mud-bathing, socialising and to cross the river.
Game viewing opportunities from the hide are flexible and spontaneous. Just a 2 minute drive from the camp, guests can be whisked to the hide whenever we see the elephants approaching the crossing. The high platform provides an amazing vantage point to watch and photograph the endearing and playful interactions between these gentle giants.
Guests can also opt to enjoy this breezy and serene spot for general game viewing, calling by for a morning coffee break or in-between the main morning and afternoon activities
The Ele hide is available for guests staying at Kaingo Camp
An absolute must for birders, photographers and anyone who loves nature! The Carmine Bee-Eater Hide is available from early September once the Carmines have established their nesting sites.
Each year huge colonies of these beautiful, vibrant birds flock to the Luangwa bringing colour to the drying bush as they busily burrow, deep into the riverbanks to nest.
Every season the hide is modified and located at the best nesting site to allow you to get close and experience the noisy chatter and magnificent displays of colour as they swoop and soar across the skies.
The birds are usually most active in the mornings and afternoon so a trip to the hide will be incorporated into your game drive. Your guide and scout will escort you from the vehicle and into the hide which is typically anchored to our boat in front of the colony. Depending on the nesting site they’ve chosen, socks and shoes may need to be removed for a short wade through shallow waters!
The Carmine Hide is available to guests staying at both Kaingo and Mwamba
The Wild Dog Lagoon hide is so named on account of the incredible dog sightings we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy here. While the nature and habits of these elusive animals means we can’t guarantee you’ll see dogs, this busy lagoon welcomes a host of different species throughout the day and is particularly productive from May until August after which time the water begins to dry up.
This hide is a great spot to visit as one of your mid-day activities with an array of plains game gathering to quench their thirst. Birders will enjoy the variety of wallowers found here and its also a favoured place for elephant and buffalo to enjoy a good old mud bath.

We are fortunate to have beautiful herbs and seasonal produce from our plot which form the inspiration for all our meals. Menus are focused on fresh flavours, and classic dishes with a twist! Following the traditional ‘safari’ mealtimes of brunch, afternoon tea and 3-course dinner the focus is always homegrown and fresh! Although we do offer many indulgences (afternoon tea been a particular highlight), we pride ourselves on keeping up to date with international food trends, in particular, the demand for nutritious food that feeds the body and soul.
Conservation South Luangwa
Our Mission
Conservation South Luangwa was formed in 2003. CSL was created by a handful of like-minded safari operators and concerned stakeholders whose vision was to help protect South Luangwa. CSL is dedicated to protecting South Luangwa, it’s wildlife and habitat through a combination of law enforcement support (anti-poaching), human-wildlife conflict mitigation, veterinary work and community outreach.
Since CSL was created, there has always been a firm belief in keeping it a majority Zambian staffed organization, the most obvious reason being sustainability and ownership. What started as a team of 5 dedicated staff fifteen years ago, has now grown into a team of 85 wildlife conservationists.
CSL works in partnership with the Government Department of National Parks and Wildlife Services (DNPW) to conduct wide spread anti-poaching patrols in the national park and game management area. CSL provides a large portion of manpower (65 scouts) for anti-poaching patrols, transport deployments by vehicle and boats, rations, uniforms, equipment and refresher training.
Each month we support a minimum of 12 anti-poaching field patrols lasting 10 days each, 15 anti-snaring patrols and other rapid reaction responses.
Our Impact
Aerial Surveillance and Monitoring - CSL co-owns a light aircraft with the Zambian Carnivore Program used for aerial surveillance and monitoring of illegal activities such as carcasses, drying racks, bush fires, poachers and camps and long-term research monitoring of carnivores. The CSL / ZCP aircraft is a vital tool in the fight against poaching.
Detection Dog Unit - CSL has five detection dogs who work tirelessly with their eight handlers to reduce wildlife trafficking and poaching. The dogs are trained to detect ivory, bush meat, leopard, cheetah and lion skins, pangolin, firearms and ammunition and protected timber.
Wildlife Rescues - CSL employs a joint veterinarian with the Zambian Carnivore program to rescue wildlife that has been snared or has other human inflicted injuries in addition to collaring animals for research purposes. Over the past decade we have immobilized over 160 snared elephants, 30 lions, 10 giraffe, 15 hyaena, 20 wild dogs and many more.

Our Mission
Project Luangwa is a charitable organisation formed by a handful of Safari Operators of South Luangwa as a part of our commitment to responsible tourism. Their aim is to create an effective, coordinated approach to helping local communities improve their long-term economic prospects whilst avoiding a negative impact on the environment and wildlife.
We believe as a charity operating in Zambia that by developing and improving education in schools and creating training opportunities we can help families have the chance of a lasting and sustainable income.
Our Impact
Shenton Safaris and Project Luangwa are proud to partner with Pack for a Purpose, a non-profit organization that encourages travellers to pack much needed supplies requested by community based projects at their destinations around the globe.
Travellers visiting participating lodgings such as Kaingo and Mwamba are asked to use five pounds of space in their luggage to bring supplies for community projects. The online resource lists the specific needs requested by each project, such as pencils and books for schools, or bandages and cotton swabs in medical clinics.

Mwamba Bush Camp | South Luangwa National Park
Meaning ‘heaven’ in our local language, Mwamba is the quintessential African bushcamp. Our intimate camp features just 4 tranquil chalets, made from woven reed, thatch and other natural materials.
Each chalet is set along the banks of the dry, meandering Mwamba riverbed with comfortable, shaded verandas from which to enjoy the abundant birdlife and feeling of total serenity. Clean and silent solar power provides each room with lighting and cooling fans for the summer months. The ensuite, outdoor bathrooms elevate the bush experience with double basins complemented by stunning copper tapware, beautiful live-edge mirrors, and showers tucked into the trees for a gorgeous back-to-nature feel.
Delicious meals and stories of the day’s encounters are shared in our bush-style “chitenge”, set under the deep shade of huge ebony trees, while the spacious deck offers a relaxing space with breathtaking views of the Mwamba river. A spectacular sunset viewing point on top of a large termite mound and a glowing campfire under the stars completes the camp’s friendly and personal atmosphere.

Chalet
Mwamba's tranquil chalets are authentically recreated each year, and feature woven bamboo on the exterior and interior, with a layer of matting and a screen in between to keep out insects and other elements. With each location carefully chosen after years of observation, the hides offer phenomenal game viewing, photographic opportunities and the chance to simply just sit comfortably and quietly enjoy the moment.
At any one time across the season, we can have up to 6 hides available. Previously used for filming by the BBC, Africa Geographic and the Discovery Channel, these include our carmine bee-eater hide and the ever active, ‘Last Waterhole’ Mwamba Hide.
Just a short walk from the main camp, the last waterhole hide is built into the banks surrounding a permanent and active waterhole.
With several viewing levels, the hide offers its hidden inhabitants a breath-taking, eye-level perspective of the array of birds, mammals and reptiles that visit throughout the day.
An established source of water, the hide welcomes visitors across the season and becomes particularly productive as we head into the hotter summer months and other, in-land water spots dry up.
Exclusive to guests staying at Mwamba Bushcamp, the comfortable and shaded hide is a great spot to spend time between activities. The stage remains constant but the players change throughout the day. Amazingly addictive, many guests will forgo a drive or walk to remain at the hide and quietly enjoy the action!

This is the safest and most effective way to view big game. Drives are conducted in open 4wd vehicles that have been specially adapted for safari use with comfy seats, pockets to stow your gear and bean bags to steady your camera for those all important photos. Usually departing in the early morning, drives can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on what's seen and the requirements of the guests. In the late afternoon drives set off for an hour or so before stopping at a scenic point for sundowners.
Once the sun has set, night drives commence. Zambia is one of the few countries that permit night drives, perhaps the most interesting of all safari activities.
Using filtered spotlights, which do not interfere with the wellbeing and behaviour of the subject and which make it much easier on your eyes too, this is an opportunity to see nocturnal creatures such as civet, porcupine, genet, and also to see some of the larger predators on the move. It is not uncommon to see a pride of lions on a kill or a leopard stalking through the bush. These drives last as long as they need to.
Pioneered in Zambia, bush walks are essentially a "micro-safari". An armed ranger and qualified and experienced pro guide will guide you through the wilderness on foot, interpreting spoor, identifying the various flora and fauna, and highlighting conservation issues. However elephants and buffalo are seen on most walks and sometimes the big cats, so expect anything at anytime. The pace is leisurely and the duration is determined by guests' requirements – and what is seen on the walk. Typically, a few hours are sufficient.
One of the great aspects of a visit to Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro is the variety of activities offered by virtue of our presence on the Zambezi river.
These are two of the few camps permitted to conduct waterborne safaris within the National Park, and our custom built, motorized pontoons are ideal to take advantage of this.
Enjoy morning or afternoon cruises exploring numerous channels, viewing hippo, buffalo, elephant and prolific bird life.
Also on offer are sunset and sundowner cruises, often completed with a night drive back to camp.
