This is the only access route by vehicle into the Fish River Canyon. As you journey into the depths of the canyon, you will witness first-hand the millions of years of geological upheaval when the earth’s continents separated and tectonic movement resulted in the formation of the canyon. Petrified rippled mud and glacial deposits, dramatic fault lines, rough limestone and shiny quartzite are but a few of the features you will see along the way. Guides will point out evidence of rhino that once navigated the gorges and pairs of territorial klipspringers as they feast on succulents. The drive ends at the permanent rock pools. Lunch is served before heading back to the Lodge. The duration of the excursion is approximately 7 hours.
Departure time from the Lodge – between 06h00 and 07h00 after an early breakfast | Minimum 2 guests per excursion, maximum 9 per vehicle | 50% discount for children under 12.
These easy unguided walks along the rim of the canyon are best taken early in the morning and late afternoon when the canyon’s shadows and colours are at their most dramatic. Have a closer look at the plants and the birdlife and marvel at the vastness of the landscape and the skies. There are few places left in the world where you can truly be alone and have clean air to breathe and time to reflect. Alone on the rim of the canyon – seize the moment!
Guided walks are also available on request depending on availability of guides.
The late afternoon drive will take you along the top of the plateau with stops at two different viewpoints for you to take photographs and experience the canyon at its most dramatic. Our guide will also explain the geology, flora and fauna along the way before you catch a glimpse of the meandering Fish River below at the last stop. Drinks and snacks will be served.
Departure: 17h00 in winter, 18h00 in summer | Minimum 2 guests per excursion – maximum 9 per vehicle | 50% discount for children under 12.
Full Day Canyon Day Hike
Our guide will help you navigate ‘jelly legs’ gorge from the rim to the upper part of the canyon below. After traversing the rock strewn slopes there is a further descent to permanent rock-pools in the river. A refreshing swim through the craggy gorge gets you well and truly into the heart of the canyon. A picnic lunch is served before hiking back up to the Lodge.
This is a strenuous hike and requires a high level of fitness.
Departure time for this hike of 8-10 hours varies according to the season.
Trainers or hiking boots and a daypack are essential.
Half-Day Canyon Hike
The Half-Day hike takes hikers from the viewpoint into the canyon to a second view point and back up again.
Departure time for this hike of 4-5 hours varies according to the season.
Trainers or hiking boots and a daypack are essential.
The Rim to River Hike and the Canyon Day Hike can only be booked through res2@journeysnamibia.com or fishriver@journeysnamibia.com
The guided route through harsh terrain descends steeply into the canyon via ‘jelly legs gorge’ and up again to the rim. There are no demarcated tracks adding a sense of true adventure to the experience. Whilst this hike requires significant levels of fitness – there is no need to carry heavy backpacks; a canvas bag with your personal belongings will be delivered each day to either Camp Eternity or Camp Edge where you will overnight.
You will pass intriguing desert-adapted quiver trees standing solitary against a fascinating 500 million year old geological fault. Or you might want to stop and watch a herd of the rare Hartman’s zebra as they disappear into a side canyon. On hot days you can cool off in permanent rock pools and swim between the rock faces while a Pied Kingfisher watches from a ledge above.
Camp Eternity and Camp Edge are as evocative as their names suggest. Carefully designed stone gabion shelters merge with the landscape. Meals are served under a trillion stars and when you retire to the comfort of your tent, nature’s elements – either harsh or heavenly – are close by and keep you company through the night.
The Canyon Rim to River Hike includes:
An experienced guide for a minimum of 2 guests and a maximum of 8 guests per group

Anderssons At Ongava | Ongava Private Game Reserve
27 Oct 2017 - 30 Oct 2017
Nestled in mopane scrub on white calcrete soils, Andersson’s Camp is situated 4.5 km from Etosha’s Andersson Gate. The camp was named after Swedish explorer Charles Andersson – one of the first Europeans to “discover” Etosha, Africa’s largest saltpan. The resurrected former farmstead that stands on the site now forms the centre of a charming camp fronting onto a productive waterhole. The 18 tented en-suite units (including two family suites) are raised on decks. The camp is an exciting example of sustainable construction; this model of eco-sensitive lodging provides an authentic, safe and down-to-earth experience for small groups, families and independent travellers to the Etosha region and is easily accessible by either road or air. Activities include morning and/or afternoon game drives in Etosha National Park, and morning and afternoon/evening drives (on request) and nature walks on Ongava Reserve. The sunken hide at the waterhole in front of camp is an excellent place from which to watch wildlife coming down to drink.
Conservation Safari Company recommends Andersson's Camp for a good value Etosha and private reserve experience - combining the best of both.
Rates are fully inclusive of meals, drinks (excluding premium options), safari activities into Etosha and in Ongava reserve.

Every possible comfort has been created for – from full solar electricity and a private viewing deck, through to yoga mats!

Kanana | Okavango Delta
4 Nov 2017 - 7 Nov 2017
Kanana is located in the southwest of the Okavango Delta, an area that encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals. The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta. Guests are accommodated in spacious, twin-bedded safari tents (including a family tent), each with en-suite bathrooms with shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. The tents are well spaced, affording privacy whilst remaining within comfortable distance from the main camp area.
The annual floods transform parts of this concession into a true water paradise, offering guests the best of both worlds. At certain times of the year guests can experience magnificent game sightings during drives as well as the unique experience of exploring the delta’s beautiful waterways by boat. You may actually enjoy the breathtaking spectacle of the water visibly rising around the camp’s raised teak decks. The camp's activities vary with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta and include morning and late afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Alternatively you may explore the crystal clear waterways by Mokoro or motorboat, and enjoy the magnificent variety of birds, plant and reptile species found in the area. Birding is spectacular, and Kanana hosts a seasonal heronry that teems with activity, a Kanana highlight which converts all visitors to avid ‘twitchers’. Guided bush walks are highly recommended as is fishing for tilapia, African pike and sharptooth catfish.
Conservation/Botswana Safari Company recommends Kanana for its excellent staff and hospitality and for its traditional tented camp offering in a very beautiful part of the delta. A favourite for all clients who have been there! As part of its’ social responsibility program, your stay at the lodge supports Bana Ba Letsatsi. Bana Ba Letsatsi (which means Children of the sun) is a charity that was established in 2004 with the mission of supporting vulnerable, orphaned and at risk children living in Maun. There are over 200 children on the register; these children are registered as they have either never been to school or dropped out, suffer sexual or physical abuse, are orphaned or lack parental care, beg, work under-age, abuse drugs.
Rates include all meals and snacks, selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, game activities conducted by professional guides, daily laundry service, all taxes, park entrance fees and service charges, emergency evacuation insurance (to regional medical facility)

With only a small number of guests per boat and no set itinerary or departure dates, staying in one of the three Chobe Princesses is like being on your very own luxury houseboat. The entire boat can also be booked exclusively, giving you your very own private villa on the water. As you drift down the Chobe River and spot incredible wildlife scenes, you'll be able to completely relax in an intimate river safari experience.
Each houseboat has a minimum of three smaller "tender" boats for use on daily excursions that take your fancy: mark off over 450 bird species found in this wetland paradise, try your hand at landing a tiger fish, or capture Africa's unique beauty on a photographic safari. Whatever you choose to do, your day trips will be personal and flexible because you’ll be sharing the tender boats with a small number of guests. Alternatively, simply laze on a deck chair with an ice-cold drink in hand as you soak up the tranquility that surrounds you.
Each cabin on board the Chobe Princesses is tastefully decorated in a contemporary style, and each has its own private view onto the ever-changing landscapes beyond. As you lie on your king-sized bed, spot an elephant grazing on the riverbank nearby, or see a fish eagle diving for its prey. On the upper entertainment deck, a spacious lounge and bar area encourages you to take time out while there’s also a plunge pool that's perfect for a refreshing dip. After a day spent doing as you please, fall asleep with the calls of hyena or even a lion drifting through the open doors of your cabin.
Conservation Safari Company recommends Chobe Princesses for its access to the wildlife of the Chobe River without the masses of boats and vehicles that emanate from Kasane. The uniquely quiet time on the water is a wonderful compliment to your land-based activities and big game viewing.
Rates include Accommodation all meals, soft drinks, mineral water, coffee, tea, beer and wine, road transfers to and from Kasane International Airport and Kasane Immigration Office on arrival and departure, boat transfers between Kasane Immigration Office in Botswana and Namibia Immigration office, activities and excursions including guided game viewing by tender boat, guided fishing from a well-equipped fishing boat, guided birding, a guided walk on Impalila Island to see the ancient Baobab tree or a visit to a local village on the Namibian side of the Chobe River, all fuel, all equipment hire (eg fishing rods, lures etc, they reserve the right to charge for lost or damaged equipment), fishing licenses (if required), 15% Namibian VAT, 01% Namibian Tourism Levy

Game viewing on the Chobe River is most exceptional from March to November, when the weather is drier and the animals are more mobile in search of food and water. Winter offers particularly dramatic sightings, while the spring and autumn shoulder seasons provide excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife. During the summer rains, the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of life, creating unique wildlife and birdwatching experiences.
Each day, guests venture out by tender boat to observe large herds of elephants, buffalo, lions, crocodiles, zebras, and more, all drawn to the river. The guides maintain a respectful distance, monitoring animal behaviour and adjusting the boat as needed to ensure minimal disruption. Guests will also encounter an impressive array of birdlife and plant species along the way.
No trip to the Chobe is complete without experiencing the thrill of fishing. On the Chobe River, it's not just about the catch – it’s about the adventure. Hooking a Tiger fish, one of Africa’s most sought-after species, is an experience anglers dream of. Known for their strength and speed, Tiger fish offer an exciting challenge that leaves guests with unforgettable memories.
Fishing safaris are conducted on a catch-and-release basis, ensuring the sustainability of the fish populations. The knowledgeable guides are dedicated to safely returning the fish to the water, allowing them to thrive for years to come.
Rates include all conventional fishing gear, such as rods, lures, lines, and reels. For those interested in fly fishing, it’s recommended to bring personal gear, as preferences can vary. This ensures each guest enjoys a fishing experience tailored to their needs.
With over 450 species, diverse terrains, and a stunning African backdrop, the Chobe River provides the ideal setting for a highly rewarding bird-watching safari. Birding season begins in September, with the arrival of migratory birds boosting the population by up to 20% compared to the winter months.
The prime time for birdwatching is early morning before breakfast, as various species leave their roosts and venture into the National Park. Guests aboard any of the three Chobe Princesses enjoy access to knowledgeable guides and tender boats, ensuring a truly rewarding birding experience.
Uninterrupted access to wild animals, absolute silence, and golden light make the Chobe River an unforgettable photographic safari destination, and one of Africa's top spots for wildlife photographers. To help capture that perfect moment, a custom-designed photographic safari boat is available on request, accommodating up to four clients in individual photographic seats.
The boat features custom-designed swivel chairs, offering greater stability and 360-degree views for a wider range of subject matter. Each seat is equipped with a mount for resting SLR cameras, and an experienced safari guide will assist in finding the perfect shot.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own photographic equipment, as it is not provided onboard. The recommended lens is an 80-400mm zoom for optimal results.
Travel by tender boat to a local Namibian village on the floodplains of the East Caprivi and meet the elders and locals of the Subiya tribe. Gain a deeper understanding of life in this 100-year-old village as you learn about their daily challenges, farming practices, and traditions.
The tour concludes with a vibrant display of traditional dancing and singing, where guests are welcome to join in the fun.
As a memento of your visit, consider purchasing a woven basket, beaded jewellery, or a carved wooden animal. The sale of these crafts helps empower the village by providing a valuable source of income. If you wish to bring gifts for the village children, items such as school stationery, books, or clothing are always highly appreciated.
Dining on the Chobe Princess
Situated on the middle deck, the open-plan air-conditioned dining area offers panoramic views of the Chobe National Park. Dining is a communal experience, where all guests gather around a single table, creating an opportunity to connect with fellow travellers. With a maximum of 8 to 10 guests, the setting ensures an intimate and engaging atmosphere. Separate seating can be accommodated upon request.
Chobe Princess Cabins have beautiful big windows that slide open to let in those ever-changing river views. Listen to the soft grunt of hippo as you watch for elephant at the water’s edge – all from the comfort of your king-size bed. Cabin interiors have soft linens, and a soothing colour scheme of riverine greens and whites that blend with the natural landscape.
Instead of sliding windows, our Chobe Princess Superior Cabins each have their own private balcony. Imagine waking in the morning and stepping out onto your balcony facing Chobe National Park. Later, while the boat is sailing, you’ll have a front-row seat to the incredible landscapes and wildlife on the riverbanks. What’s more, the top cabin on the larger Chobe Princess, has an elevation that’s excellent for wildlife spotting.

She’s been sleeping guests, feeding strangers and quenching thirsts for almost two decades and as far as we can gather we are the fourth set of owners to open her doors. In doing so, we gave her a complete facelift. We not only re-christened the old bag, but also donned her in new colours. Known as a bit of a party animal, we enlarged the bar – and then added another one. We have re-vamped her from head to toe and decorated her with our eclectic mixture of art and collectibles that we have accumulated from around the world.

The tour will show you how a modern day working commercial farm operates.
Our tour guide, Koos, starts by telling you the fascinating story of how Oudtshoorn owes its history to the ostrich. Indeed the ostrich feather started it all … and the rest (as they say)… is history!
Koos, will take you for a drive around the farm to show you the adult ostriches. You will get a chance to meet the curious and friendly, young ostriches in the farm paddocks.
He then will show you how we breed the chicks. You will see how we use advanced farming methods to care for the eggs and provide the right environment for them to hatch into healthy young birds. Once hatched, our chicks then go into the nursery for their upbringing. As they grow, so they move into bigger paddocks along with all the other chicks they bonded with in the nursery.
If you want to do shopping, some of the local things that we recommend you buy as gifts or souvenirs are the following places. Mooiplaas Country Guesthouse also has an on site curio shop.

The landmark of Swellengrebel Street in Swellendam, better known as Swellendam's 'Historical Mile', the Drostdy Museum has been voted the best museum in South Africa and has become a landmark of South African heritage. Originally built in 1747 as headquarters for the town's magistrate after which various other outbuildings, a jail and a mill was added spanning over multiple hectare throughout the town all within walking distance from Schoone Oordt.
The creative colaboration between owners of the Bukkenburg Pottery Studio and Gallery, David Schlapobersky and Felicity Potter, started in 1973 and lead them to Swellendam in 1996 when they opened the studio. Bukkenburg Pottery Studio and Gallery is situated in Swellengrebel Street, a short stroll down the street from Schoone Oordt.
A superb family activity with plenty to do for the children and great coffee, meals and confectionery for every member of the family to enjoy. The nursery grows and stocks succulents, aloes and other rare plants.
Swellendam's 'berried' treasure - Wildebraam is a berry farm nestled in the Hermitage Valley just 2km outside town. The farm offers tastings of their unique liquers, syrups and other berry products farmed and manufactured on the estate. In berry season (November to December) the estate also offers berry picking - a wonderful family activity which you can end off with milkshakes, coffee and a light meal at the estate's coffee shop.
Situated on the banks of the Breede River the Bontebok National Park is just a 5km drive outside Swellendam. With a variety of wild life and birds a trip to the park will ensure excitement for young and old - pack a picnic basket (available from Schoone Oordt per request), drive all the way to the river bank and take in all the goodness of the great outdoors.

De Hoop Nature Reserve is a 50km drive from Swellendam where the Potberg Mountains meet the shore. The reserve makes the perfect location for a day-trip and has its own restaurant that is open daily. Activities at De Hoop Nature reserve are endless - you can hike through Fynbos plains, go mountain biking along the gravel backroads, laze on the beach or take a game drive through this scenic reserve.
Marloth Nature Reserve is named after the pioneer botanist who, together with a deputation of Swellendam residents, petitioned the Minister of Lands and Forestry in 1928 to set aside part of the mountain as a nature reserve. During 1981, the reserve was enlarged to include the rest of the State Forest and the Swellendam hiking trail was opened.
The reserve’s vegetation is predominantly mountain fynbos, with patches of forest. There are several species of Protea and more than 25 species of erica, most of which flower in November. Marloth, like the rest of the southern Cape, has hot summers and cold winters. The higher mountain peaks are occasionally dusted in snow during the cold winter months.
As riding horses is not natural to the horse, we strive to keep our approach as pleasant and ethical as possible. We strive for “Harmonious Horse-Human Handling” (Debra-Leigh Mohle)
Our training techniques are based on evidence based scientific research and the horse’s welfare and also the horse and the rider’s safety are paramount at all levels of interaction.
A lot of our techniques and principles of training come from the work of Dr Andrew Mclean and the work of the international Society of Equitation Science. These techniques are firmly rooted in learning theory. Amy also spent some time training in Classical Dressage in Spain.
We take into consideration how the animal lives, behaves, how it learns and how it socializes in order to develop an uncomplicated “language” or “method” of communication between horse and rider. This allows us to safely and pleasantly influence the horse to do all the strange things we as humans require them to do.
Diesel & Crème is a Vintage Diner & Motel (The Karoo Moon Motel, House & Cottage) situated on the scenic Route 62 in Barrydale.
This place is crammed full of memorabilia which is famous for it's milkshakes in enticingly different combos. There's more, a large breakfast and lunch menu, they make a mean variety of burgers, but prepared to queue, such it's fame. Caution, it closes at 5pm.
David and Rita Trafford discovered the future Sijnn land while on holiday in Malgas in 2000. The soil and landscape reminded them of Portugal and they were immediately intrigued. A purchase agreement and more than 200 soil profiles later, approximately ten hectares of vines were planted and the name Sijnn Wines was appropriated to the venture – fittingly so as the word 'sijnn' is derived from the Khoisan word meaning riverbank. Today Sijnn Wines has become well known for our interesting and bold choices of cultivars and award-winning blends.
Open every Saturday 10:00 – 15:00 or by appointment during the week.
Sixty-one years ago, Schalk-Willem Joubert left Wellington for the fertile Tradouw Valley to farm mainly with fruit and wine grapes. His son, Jacobus Joubert, Meyer’s father, realised the potential of growing premium grape cultivars for the production of wine. They delivered Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to the Co-operative Cellar in Barrydale, Cabernet Franc was planted on the farm in 1982. The fermentation cellar was built in 1998 out of stone from the rocky soils, characteristic of the farm. In 1999, the first grapes were harvested and crushed for the production of wine. The R62 Merlot/Cabernet Blend (60:40) was released after a 14-month ageing period in Burgundy oak barrels. The production is currently just below 3000 cases per year.

The Conservatory at Schoone Oordt
Food is our thing. Meals at Schoone Oordt are made with love and passion. Our country food is respectful of ingredients, unpretentiously fine dining, honestly delicious and served with true Schoone Oordt style and flair. We are particularly particular about ethically sourcing the best produce from small local artisans, suppliers and growers. Being in the Overberg, we sit in the ‘breadbasket’ of the country, so it’s easy.
Our meat comes from Jacques at WildKalahari, our eggs, fresh fruit & veg from Shantal at The Earth Centre, our salmon trout from Alicia at B’Bos Trout, our duck from Kim at Serendipity Homestead, our pork from Richard, Lowerland Farm. Our wines from all over the Overberg, but especially Sijnn, Olivedale, Silverthorn, Joubert-Tradauw, Springfield and we source artisanal rum from Dawid at Afrikanis, tequila from Tim at Three Agave in the klein karoo as well as a massive selection of gins… too many to name here. You’ll have to come and try them for yourself.
We handmake as much as we can (so that we know what’s in it) from our breads, the most delicious cheese biscuits and scones to our chocolate truffles that appear at evening turndown.
We pay particular attention to and are very conscious of dietary requirements. There are already vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free and gluten-free options on the menu and we can exclude nuts if necessary. Note that our kitchen uses a lot of these ingredients in daily practice, so please do mention any serious allergies beforehand though so that we may be properly prepared.
We are thrilled to say that The Conservatory at Schoone Oordt has grown from strength to strength over the years and we can proudly stand as one of the top Swellendam Restaurants.

Game Viewing
Game drives take place in the early morning and late afternoon when the animals are naturally most active. Key to the experience are your English-speaking local guide, working with a tracker from the local Shangaan community. This duo pool their knowledge, experience and fresh observations to maximise your wildlife sightings. Not only in terms of how much you see. But how rewarding, informative and fun the overall experience is. Your guide is often a keen photographer and will be conscious and considerate if your mission is to capture sightings on camera.
Your mode of transport, (or chariot as one of our guides likes to call it), is an open-sided 4×4 game vehicle with 3 rows of comfortable bucket seats in tiers. You generally head out with a maximum of 8 guests. This offers safe, yet close wildlife encounters. Guests sit up high for the best ‘spotting’ of birds and animals. There are no sides to inhibit your views and you naturally feel more in tune with nature. In the summer month, a shade top is added to protect against the African sun, but in winter it is open to the skies for the best bird-viewing and for stargazing.
Your guide helps you to interpret what you see. They also communicate with other vehicles by radio in order to keep in touch with sightings nearby.
Several times a week, dinner in the camps is a more hearty, campfire style meal served under the stars in a ‘boma’, a circular enclosure originally made from branches. The cosy, lantern-lit ambience recalls the early days of safari pioneers.
Another authentic safari experience is dining out under the star in a boma (an enclosed circular dining area) around the campfire. This usually takes place every 2nd night.
The gentle flicker of lanterns, candle-light and a welcoming open fire truly conjures up what is magical about a safari.
Dinner is a festive event which is alternatively served around the campfire in the open-air boma or in the thatched dining area. Dinner consists of an African and Western cuisine with exciting tastes for the more adventurous as well as various conventional options.
