Umkumbe Safari Lodge Riverside is one of the most affordable lodges located in the heart of the Sabie Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger. The reserve is about 65000 hectares and shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park.

The accommodation sleeps 20 people at capacity. Rooms have two single beds, ensuite bathrooms and private patios, while each is fitted with an air-conditioner. Some of the chalets are connected via an inter-leading door, making them ideal for small groups and families. During the heat of summer, guests can relax around the swimming pool, which overlooks the Sand River and the open wilderness.

Dining in a traditional boma around a roaring fire is one of the most enjoyable African bush experiences. After dinner, rangers may even take guests out on a night drive to view the nocturnally active wildlife.

Umkumbe is in a prime position and there is almost always game to be seen from the deck and the main guest areas. Elephants, buffalo, antelope, baboons are regular visitors, while a pair of breeding fish eagles nests just in front of the lodge.

Superior Suites Standard Rooms

There are 8 Superior Suites, each of which sleep two people in either one king size bed or two single beds. Every suite also has two sleeper couches and an en suite bathroom, which includes a bath and outdoor shower. Two of the suites are inter-leading (Buffalo and Elephant), making it a good option for families or friends travelling together.

There are 3 Standard Rooms at Umkumbe, two of which are interleading. The Standard Rooms each sleep two people in either one king size bed or two single beds, and has an en suite bathroom with a shower only. All 3 Standard Rooms face the Sand River, which flows in front of the lodge.

Morning and Evening Game Drives Game Walks

At Umkumbe we offer two game drives per day, one in the morning that departs at approximately 06h00 and the afternoon drive at 16h00. On the morning drive there is a stop for coffee and on the afternoon drive you will stop for sundowners. After sundowners guests will get to experience a night drive on the journey back to the lodge.

The night drives allow guests the opportunity to see the nocturnal animals not encountered during the day. Your tracker uses a powerful spotlight during the night drives to search for nocturnal animals, which include hyenas, aardvarks, bush babies, genet cats and mongoose.

After a full breakfast guests have the option of going on morning bush walk. Walks are led by qualified and trained field guides. You will have the opportunity to track wildlife, learn about the surrounding vegetation and how to read the African bush. If you're lucky you will enjoy a few close encounters with large predators.

Game walks are upon request and do not form part of the standard, set daily itinerary. Game walks are in English only and are subject to guide availability and weather conditions. They are not guaranteed.

Outdoor Traditional Safari Style Dining

Guests dine together in the open-air boma when they stay at Umkumbe. The tables are centred around a campfire, which is often the hub of activity after dinner. Rangers will often come and sit with guests to answer questions about the day's safari.

Dinner is served at a set time after the evening game drive, and there is always a variety of deliciously prepared dishes available buffet-style.

Aloe House is a top quality, dedicated, 18-sleeper self-catering facility in a private corner of Mlilwane. The main house has 5 rooms and the 2 seperate cottages have two rooms each - all 9 rooms are en-suite, with either twin-share or double beds. A large lounge with a fire place and open-plan kitchen provide for super social interaction. Dining facilities are more than adequate on the wide undercover veranda while a spacious open-air braai area near the house enjoys fabulous views and a shelter.

There is nothing quite like sitting on an animal in nature! Chubeka Trails is our horse trails arm, with horses catering for beginners to advanced riders of all ages. Chubeka Trails offers hourly rides throughout the day, a half-day Rock of Execution Trail, and 1-4 night overnight camping trails for 2-8 people. Weight restrictions apply.

Departing from Mlilwane Rest Camp, your Guide will take you along trails focusing on your interest, be it birding or wildlife. The diverse habitats in close proximity allow for great sightings, including woodland, grassland, forest and aquatic species. Guided walk includes bottled water.

Embark on an open 4x4 vehicle with a trained Guide to explore Mlilwane. Game drives are a wonderfully relaxed opportunity to observe and take stunning pictures of the sanctuary. There are a number of variations on offer:

Sunrise Game Drive (2hr) – Take advantage of the early morning light, and watch nature wake to a new day. Tea/coffee and a snack are included.

Sunset Game Drive (2hr) – A short exploration of the plains before heading up Nyonyane Mountain (the infamous Execution Rock) in time to enjoy the sunset over the distant mountains. A drink is included.

Roan Drive (1.5hr) – A guided excursion visiting the Roan Antelope breeding project, excludes drinks/snacks.

Self Drive – Most of Mlilwane’s roads are suitable for normal sedans, with exception of the mountain roads. Don’t forget your map!

Mountain bikes may be hired by the hour for self-guided or guided adventures – or guests may bring their own at no extra cost. Dirt roads and certain single-track trails for a little more fun give cyclist a wide range of technical options, from the steep mountain to flat gentle game viewing. Cyclists are always reminded that wildlife has right of way and speeding is not an eco-activity. Our bikes are well maintained and available at Mlilwane Rest Camp Reception.

Mlilwane is also the home of the ever-popular annual Nedbank Swaziland's Imvelo MTB Classic which draws cyclists from afar in early June. The race offers 4 distances and is limited to 500 cyclists making it a “true family day out” and a race with real personality.

Visit Mlilwane's neighbouring Chief's Village for an informative and fun authentic traditional experience. Our guide will meet the group at our Sangweni Gate, and lead the short walk to the homestead, sharing the do’s and don’ts and facilitating interpretation. Hosted by our vibrant, energetic and interactive Chief, learn a little siSwati, try your hand at plaiting ‘Lutindzi’ grass or grinding maize. This is a group activity hosted by our local Chief, giving guests an insight to the way of life in rural Swaziland.

A 2-hour guided walk through the Esitjeni community alongside Mlilwane allows a glimpse of life on a day-to-day basis. Observe how architecture is changing and fields are tended, walk past the primary school and buy refreshments at the local grocer. For the rest, it is spontaneous and could include grinding maize, carrying water, building a wall or washing clothes in the stream. Guests meet our guide at Sangweni Gate, from where the circular walk commences into the Esitjeni Community. Please bring sun hat, sun block, change for the grocer. The group may be requested to carry a small sack of mealies or the like for interactive experiences.

Falaza Game Park and Spa offers Luxury Tented accommodation and an array of authentic bush experiences in a lush indigenous setting. Luxury tented accommodation provides true safari ambience, with every comfort catered for, including spacious dressing rooms, en-suite bathrooms and private sundecks. The lodge accommodates 30 guests in 15 Luxury, twin-bedded tents. Berghouse & Cottages dat op een 1.650 hectare groot estate gelegen is, heeft spectaculaire uitzichten op de bergen en zandsteen kliffen van de Noordelijke en Centrale Drakensbergen. Het uitzicht strekt van Monks Cowls, Cathkin Park en Cathedral Peak in het zuiden tot het Amphitheatre en de Maluti Mountains in het noorden.
De cottages zijn comfortabel ingericht en voorzien van een volledig ingerichte keuken, woonkamer met open haard en één of meerdere slaapkamers. De cottages zijn geschikt voor self-catering, maar kunnen ook op basis van ontbijt of half pension geboekt worden. Ontbijt en diner worden vers bereid door de chef en afgeleverd bij de cottage.
Op het eigen terrein kunnen gasten heerlijk wandelen, paardrijden, vissen of zwemmen in de rivier. Er zijn tevens diverse routes voor 4x4 en mountainbike.
In het Royal Natal Park zijn er diverse wandelmogelijkheden, waaronder de uitdagende wandeling naar de Tugela Falls, de op twee na hoogste waterval ter wereld. In de buurt zijn er mogelijkheden om te golfen en Bushmen Rock Art te bekijken.
