More Information
There are two common currencies in Panama, the U.S. Dollar and the Panamanian Balboa that has a fixed ratio of 1:1 to the U.S. Dollar. It is advised to bring cash in small denominations. There are ATMs in banks and supermarkets in the larger towns of Panama but will most likely not be accessible in more remote areas or offshore islands so bring a sufficient amount of cash. Visa and MasterCard are generally accepted in most business establishments and some may also accept American Express cards. Tropic Star Lodge accepts cash as well as VISA and MasterCard.
In keeping with our policy, tips are a voluntary gesture on your part. We do however recognize that most Americans do tip their guides and lodge staff. Tipping in Panama is not compulsory but is appreciated, though you will find it to be generally less than the U.S. As a guideline, for restaurants and bars standard tip is about 10% and adjusted for level of service. A gratuity may be automatically added to your bill so check carefully before paying.
At Tropic Star the customary gratuities for the lodge staff (consisting of 8-12 people) is $150.00 for your stay. For your Captain and First Mate $100.00 - $150.00 per day per boat while it is recommended Dock Assitants be given $20.00 per person for your stay. For the Fishing Director, Albert Battoo, tipping is at your discretion.
