Travellers Rest Hotel is located just outside Kisoro, in the extreme south-western corner of Uganda on the borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The hotel is built in a somewhat colonial style and was entirely renovated in 1999. It has 12 rooms and provides a offers a cosy environment to relax in after gorilla treks or day visits to the surrounding volcanoes and forest.
The landscaped gardens are a haven for many bird species which can be viewed whilst relaxing on the terrace with the sweet smell of honeysuckle drifting over. In the evenings, as it becomes cooler, guests gather around the fireplace or in the lounge.
From far away the huge cones of the Virunga volcanoes dominate the landscape and beckon as you approach. The surrounding landscape is of astonishing beauty. The volcano mountains offer spectacular views on the Rift Valley and the emerald-green Lake Mutanda in the distance. In the sixties the famous American animal campaigner Dian Fossey visited Travellers Rest many times to complete paperwork and relax and meet with people. At Sine Camp (2,596m) there are wooden huts set between tall forest trees on a narrow ridge where you may sit and enjoy the beauty of the Afro Montane forest while you look down at a fantastic waterfall crashing over the rocks far below. Some guests prefer to sit outside enjoying the warmth of the campfire and chat to the guides about the mountains and life in their community. Sine is just below the bamboo zone and the area around has many different bird species. 150 meters from the camp is Enock falls which is set in livid green vegetation and hanging vine. Truly beautiful.

Bugata camp (4,062m) has good facilities with solar lights, decent toilets and bathrooms where the guides may prepare some warm water in a basin for you to wash. Bugata Camp is situated way up Bamwanjara Pass high above Bugata Lake with views across Lake Kopello to Weismann’s Peak, which is often covered with snow then down the valley views of Lake Africa and Lake Kanganyika and the many small peaks towards Mutinda Camp.

Papaya Lake Lodge is situated about 350 km away from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, in one of the country’s most scenic regions.
