Bernacchi House | Maria Island
Bernacchi House is at the northern tip of Maria island in the World Heritage-listed settlement of Darlington. It was built in 1843 for Reverend Thomas Dove and his wife and was acquired by an enterprising 19th-century Italian settler, Diego Bernacchi in the mid-1880s. Bernacchi established a small cement works on the island and also planted a vineyard but that proved to be unsustainable.
Although it has since been restored, Bernacchi House still rests on a foundation of red bricks handcrafted by convicts on the island. Your last night is spent here.
