The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara | Victoria Falls (Zambia)

The Royal Livingstone Hotel is an elegant 5 star hotel in an unrivalled setting overlooking the Victoria Falls in Zambia. It is actually situated within the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park so that guests staying here have unlimited access to the Victoria Falls less than five minutes walk away - great for budding photographers who want to get that perfect shot of the Falls. The Royal Livingstone Hotel has a stunning riverine setting right on the Zambezi river. A splendid wooden deck affords sweeping views of the falls, ideal for cocktails at sunset.

The overwhelming ambience at the Royal Livingstone is of colonial elegance with shaded verandas, cool lounges and pervading sense of space. Why not head back in time and enjoy the Royal Livingstone's traditional High Tea with all the trimmings?

The 173 luxurious rooms, with their hand-carved mahogany furniture, have an African feel with eastern overtones. They are decorated in the earthy tones of the bush offset by crisp white linen. Each has satellite television, air-conditioning, minibar, safe, telephone and tea/coffee facilities. The en suite bathrooms have both freestanding ball & claw bath and shower. All rooms are stretched along the river bank and each has a balcony or patio with views of the mature acacia trees, lawns and Zambezi River.

The Royal Livingstone has a superb restaurant which combines old-world formality with contemporary sophistication or you can opt for slightly more relaxed dining on the veranda where cool river breezes offer welcome relief from the African heat. Special dinners are offered for honeymooners. Breakfast and lunch are usually taken outside overlooking the manicured lawns and the Zambezi river. Other facilities at the Royal Livingstone include a large pool (which seems almost in the Zambezi) and pool bar. There are a range of excursions which can be booked by the hotel including sunset boat cruises, local Zambian village tours, game drives, helicopter flips and various adventure options.

Time + Tide Chongwe Camp | Lower Zambezi

Chongwe River Camp is appealingly situated on the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers, on the very edge of the Lower Zambezi park,. (The Chongwe River Camp is the boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park and the Chiawa Partnership Park.) Chongwe prides itself on its relaxed ambience. This is a place where you can curl up with a good book and not have to worry about dressing for dinner!

The main area at Chongwe River Camp comprises a convivial bar and simple lounge with reading books all under two flowing canvas roofs. However all meals take place on the large terrace in front which overlooks the Zambezi River, with views to the escarpment. Comfortable wooden chairs surround the camp fire which is a popular gathering spot after the day's safari activities. There is a facility for recharging camera and video batteries at the lodge.

Chongwe River Camp lies under a canopy of tall thorn trees with very pretty views to the escarpment in the north. Nine classic tents are large, airy and comfortably appointed with handcrafted local furniture and textules plus spacious en suite open air bathrooms. They are all under thatch to keep the rooms as cool as possible in summer. All the fixtures and fittings at Chongwe River Camp are made from organic natural materials found near the lodge. Each has a private veranda overlooking the Chongwe river.

Activities at the Chongwe River Camp include day and night game drives, walking safaris, sundowner boat cruises, canoeing on the river and tiger fishing on a catch and release basis. There’s also the option of a full day game drive into the Lower Zambezi National Park with a picnic lunch under the trees. Back in camp, the brand new wildlife hide is great for photography, especially rare nocturnal creatures.

Alternative Accommodation

Time + Tide Mchenja | South Luangwa National Park

Norman Carr Safaris operates four bush camps situated in remote areas of the South Luangwa National Park. Each of the Bushcamps are designed to be very different in style with different habitats so that the ideal is to combine the camps, perhaps walking from one camp to another. You leave early in the morning and arriving at the next camp for brunch to find your bags already waiting for you. Walking safaris from camp are not strenuous and are conducted at a pace determined by our guests but usually last 3 to 4 hours. They are led by a fully qualified guide and armed game scout.

Mchenja is a seasonal camp on the banks of the Luangwa River. Five walk-in safari tents nestle under a grove of ancient ebony trees and overlook the river. There is a main area under thatch, which houses the bar and lounge, although most meals are enjoyed under the canopy of the magnificent trees outside. The game activities of the camp are a combination of 4x4 game drives and bush walking. Usually you begin with a night or two at Kapani lodge before being driven into the more remote areas of the park. The transfer time from Kapani is 1½ hours but it's usually offered as a more leisurely game drive. This is the most luxurious of all the bushcamps and so is ideal as the end of a walking safari if you are combining more than one bushcamp.

Alternative Accommodation

Time + Tide Luwi | South Luangwa National Park

Luwi Bush Camp is a seasonal bush camp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a permanent lagoon in the South Luangwa National Park of Zambia. It is one of the more remote bush camps and focuses on walking safaris. It is run by Norman Carr Safaris, along with Kapani Safari Lodge in the central South Luangwa and three other bush camps, Nsolo, Kakuli and Mchenja.

Luwi Camp consists of four thatched bamboo chalets with polished mud floors. They are set in a beautifully shady grove of trees on the banks of the Luwi sand river. The rooms are rustic and simple yet comfortable with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. Luwi Camp offers a truly African bush experience.

A small thatched roof provides shade over the bar area but other than this there is no central covered area. Brunch is served in the shade of the trees above whilst dinner is taken under the stars accompanied by the many sounds of the Zambian night.

There is a hippo-filled lagoon close to Luwi Camp and walking safaris usually finish with sundowners at this spot. This is a small and intimate walking camp with no game drives on offer given the very limited road network in this remote area. However the wildlife in the area is prolific and to track it on foot is a memory that will last a lifetime. The Luwi area is famous for its lions and the thrill of tracking them on foot is an experience not to be missed. With voices hushed and hearts beating your mind starts to believe there's a lion behind every bush. This is a true African safari experience.

Usually you begin your safari with a night or two at Kapani Safari Lodge before continuing to Luwi Bush Camp. The transfer time from Kapani is one hour but it's usually offered as a more leisurely game drive. Each of the bush camps is designed to be different in style with different habitats (and therefore varied game) so that the ideal safari is to combine several of the camps perhaps walking from camp to camp.

The nearest camp to Luwi is Nsolo which is a comfortable three hour bush walk away. If you are transferring to Nsolo Bush Camp from Luwi then you pack your bags in the morning and set off on foot finishing your safari at Nsolo where you will find a cool drink waiting, brunch on the table and your bags in your room.

Luwi Camp is run by Norman Carr Safaris, along with Kapani Lodge & Chinzombo in the central South Luangwa and three other bush camps, Nsolo, Kakuli and Mchenja. Usually you begin your safari with a night or two at either Kapani or Chinzombo before continuing to Luwi Bush Camp. Each of the bush camps is designed to be different in style with different habitats (and therefore varied game) so that the ideal safari is to combine two or three of the camps perhaps walking from camp to camp. The nearest camp to Luwi is Nsolo Camp which is a comfortable three hour bush walk away. If you are walking to Nsolo, your bags are transferred by vehicle leaving you to set off on foot for Nsolo where you will find a cool drink waiting, brunch on the table and your bags in your room!
