Gorongosa Safaris - Chicari Camp | Gorongosa National Park
Deep within over a million acres of protected wilderness, Chicari Camp is one of just two safari camps in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park – a park celebrated for its biodiversity and inspiring conservation success. Formerly Gorongosa Wild Camp, this newly built seasonal camp offers exclusive access to a truly wild landscape.
Named after the traditional clay drinking pot, Chicari overlooks a year-round pan that draws a steady flow of wildlife. Surrounded by fever trees and woodlands, the camp blends low-impact design with understated comfort.
There are eight en-suite safari tents and two Treehide Tents at the base of a wooden treehouse. The Treehides share a deck and are ideal for families or two couples. Each tent has a private deck with front-row views of the pan’s daily wildlife parade.
Days are spent exploring Gorongosa on foot or by vehicle with expert local guides. Evenings centre around the bar, dining tent, and main campfire, where Chef Eddy and his team serve delicious meals and homemade treats. Guests flow through the space at their own pace, soaking up the stillness and spectacle of one of Africa’s most untouched parks.

Set out on an open game drive with our expert safari guides and explore over one million acres of protected wilderness in Gorongosa National Park. Traverse vast floodplains, wander through fever tree and palm forests, and encounter an extraordinary diversity of wildlife — from lion and elephant to the Park’s remarkable population of over 65,000 waterbuck. With no other vehicles in sight, it often feels like you have the entire park to yourself. Morning and evening drives include scenic coffee or sundowner stops, complete with homemade treats in unforgettable settings.
As the day winds down, there’s no better way to take it all in than with a sundowner in hand. Stop off at one of our carefully chosen spots — overlooking wide floodplains, watching hippos wallow as they settle in for the night, or facing the silhouette of Mount Gorongosa in the distance. With a fully stocked mobile bar and homemade snacks prepared by our camp chefs, sundowners in Gorongosa are less of an activity and more of a ritual — a daily celebration of nature’s beauty, unfolding in golden light.
Immerse yourself in the wilderness on a guided bush walk. Exploring Gorongosa on foot offers a deeper connection to nature as you follow animal trails, uncover hidden tracks, and discover the rich plant life that sustains the ecosystem. Led by our expert guides, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the smaller details of the bush while staying alert for glimpses of larger wildlife along the way.
Gorongosa is at the forefront of pangolin conservation, and guests have the unique opportunity to learn more about these elusive and endangered animals. All visitors can tour the Pangolin Conservation Centre at the Park’s headquarters, where rescued pangolins are rehabilitated and monitored. For guests staying five nights or more, there's the unforgettable chance to join a morning foraging walk — following the pangolins as they feed in a new location each day. Walking alongside them and hearing directly from the vets and rangers offers rare insight into what it takes to care for and protect one of Africa’s most threatened species.
Learn about Gorongosa’s unique approach to conservation. The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab is a modern scientific facility in the heart of the national park, one of the first of its kind in Africa. It offers long-term research and training opportunities in biodiversity documentation, ecology, and conservation biology to Mozambicans, visiting researchers, and students. The Lab’s work helps guide restoration efforts in Gorongosa National Park and other protected areas of Mozambique.
Connect with the vibrant culture and people of Mozambique through a guided visit to the communities surrounding the Park. Many of our team members come from these villages and will introduce you to daily life, traditional customs, and the powerful connection between Gorongosa and its people. Learn about the Park’s wide-reaching community initiatives, including Girls’ Clubs that empower young women through education, and early childhood development programmes that provide vital support to preschool children. A community levy is included in your stay, so your visit directly contributes to these life-changing projects and the long-term well-being of the communities you encounter.
A trip to Mount Gorongosa reveals a completely different side of the Park — with rainforest trails, hidden waterfalls, and sweeping views. Hike to the crystal-clear pools of Murombodzi Falls for a refreshing swim, savour a picnic lunch in nature, and visit the Gorongosa Coffee Project to learn how sustainable farming is helping restore the mountain’s fragile ecosystem. The day ends with a coffee tasting of their shade-grown Arabica.
Available at extra cost.
Explore Gorongosa from a different perspective — on the water. During the wetter months, when water levels are suitable, you can drift silently by canoe along the Park’s seasonal waterways, paddling past pods of hippo, crocodiles, and prolific birdlife. It’s an intimate, peaceful way to experience the landscape. Boat safaris on Lake Urema are also possible when conditions allow, offering sweeping views of the floodplains and Mount Gorongosa in the distance. These activities are seasonal and weather-dependent, but when available, they offer a truly unique and tranquil encounter with the Park’s wilder side.
Tented Dining Area and Bar
Meals at Chicari Camp are a highlight of the safari experience. Served in the relaxed main tented dining area, guests can enjoy fresh, wholesome dishes that celebrate local flavours and ingredients. From homemade treats at high tea to generous breakfasts and flavourful dinners, the menu is both nourishing and delicious. At the heart of it all is Head Chef Eddy and his talented team, who bring creativity and warmth to every plate.
The dining area is also home to the camp’s bar and central firepit – a natural gathering point where guests can unwind with a cocktail, share stories from the day, or simply soak in the sights and sounds of the surrounding wilderness. The space flows easily between eating, drinking, and relaxing, allowing each guest to settle in and enjoy the rhythm of camp life at their own pace.
