Ikuka Safari Camp | Ruaha National Park
Perched on a dramatic escarpment in Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park, Ikuka Safari Camp offers commanding views and a sophisticated, organic design. Managed by experienced guide Mark Sheridan-Johnson, the camp features six open-sided rooms built from local white quartz and natural thatch, strategically positioned to capture either the sunrise or sunset. The interiors blend rustic elegance with comfort, featuring super king-size beds, leather sofas, and natural elements like quartz boulders and indoor greenery. While the spacious en-suite bathrooms offer rainfall showers and twin stone basins with stunning vistas, the open-plan layout prioritizes an airy, connected feel over total privacy.

The communal areas are equally stylish, featuring a wood-and-thatch mess tent built around existing trees and boulders. This central hub includes a sociable dining area for group meals, a library of field guides, and a viewing scope for spotting game on the plains below. For relaxation, guests can transition from the comfortable lounge to a raised wooden veranda, where an oval swimming pool and shaded loungers provide a cool retreat served by attentive staff. A new sleep-out deck located a short distance from the main camp offers an additional layer of adventure for those wishing to spend a night under the stars.
Safari activities at Ikuka focus on 4x4 game drives in the wildlife-rich Mwagusi River area, renowned for frequent sightings of elephants, lions, and leopards. For a more intimate perspective, guests can book guided walking safaris led by expert guides to track wildlife and discover the park’s smaller wonders. These morning treks typically conclude with a full breakfast served in the bush, offering a seamless blend of adventure and traditional safari hospitality.
Guided walks are also available for an extra cost of US$50 per person, and need at least 24 hours’ notice, so that the necessary park rangers can be arranged. The walks are usually led by Ikuka’s owner Mark, a highly experienced guide. You will typically head out early in the morning to learn about the tracks and signs of the bush and discover some of Ruaha's lesser-known birds and animals. You’ll then normally end with a full breakfast out in the bush.
Conservation Safari Company recommends Ikuka as a slick, personally managed lodge with good food and hospitality. The rooms are charming and original. The 20 minute drive up and down the ridge is a little tiresome after a while but all in all and fantastic camp.
Rates include all meals, drinks and game drives - walks are additional.

We have both land cruisers and land rovers available for game drives. Drives can be morning or afternoon. We recommend departing as early as possible around 6.30am with a picnic breakfast and back to camp for lunch for a siesta and dip in the swimming pool before heading out again around 4pm for an afternoon drive, all our game drives return by dark.
We can walk directly from the camp, the hilly terrain from camp makes for stunning scenery while out walking as well as a chance to get some good exercise. We often see elephant, impala, kudu and giraffe on our walks as well as plenty more flora and fauna. A walk is a great opportunity do discover many of the smaller details of the bush that you might miss while on a game drive.
Chada Katavi | Katavi National Park
Little has changed at Chada Katavi since the Nomad Tanzania founders arrived 20 years ago. From the air you have to look carefully to spot it, you'll find your eyes are immediately drawn to such wide open spaces. That's the promise of Katavi, total absorption into the natural world.
Chada Katavi is a masterclass in classic, expedition-style safari, designed for those who value immersion over opulence. Tucked beneath a canopy of acacia and tamarind trees on the edge of the vast Chada Plain, the camp possesses a nostalgic, low-impact aesthetic that feels like a private outpost from a bygone era. Its six spacious Meru-style tents are elevated on wooden platforms, featuring wide mesh windows that invite the sights and sounds of the bush indoors. While the design is intentionally minimalist, it remains deeply comfortable, offering en-suite bathrooms equipped with traditional bucket showers and eco-flush toilets that honor the camp's commitment to the environment.
The social heart of the camp is an open-sided mess tent that houses a communal dining area, a library, and a bar, all designed to foster a sense of shared adventure. Most of the experience takes place outdoors, from fireside sundowners to alfresco dinners under the stars. The activities are equally immersive, focusing on the high-density wildlife of Katavi National Park. Guests can explore the plains via open-vehicle game drives or engage in world-class walking safaris. For a more visceral connection to the land, the camp also offers fly-camping, where guests spend a night in a remote, lightweight camp under the vast African sky.
Accessing this remote sanctuary involves a light aircraft flight—typically from Arusha or Dar es Salaam—landing at the nearby Ikuu airstrip. The camp operates seasonally during the dry months from June to October, a period when the surrounding rivers recede and the landscape teems with massive herds of buffalo, elephants, and some of Africa’s largest pods of hippos. It is a destination that rewards the effort of the journey with a level of solitude and raw wilderness that is increasingly rare to find.

Large, airy en-suite tents with a big verandah, twin or double beds with fresh linen and a pioneering style. There's a place to hang clothes, a bureau, chairs on the verandah on which to sit and enjoy the sounds and sights of the bush. Bathrooms are en-suite, and open to the canopy. Safari-style bucket showers lend a sense of adventure and help us keep our environmental footprint small in this area of scarce water. There's also an eco-flush toilet which is both convenient and uses 90% less water than a conventional toilet.
The tents are scattered among a grove of tall tamarind trees, which in turn attract monkeys, elephants and other wildlife. It's not uncommon to watch a herd of impala wonder by while you're enjoying a cup of tea on your verandah, or have an elephant walk past while you have a siesta.
Venture out for a night under the starry sky. Flycamping is a way of shedding amenities without being uncomfortable, and getting as close to nature as possible. The camp is set up by a small team, while you enjoy a guided bushwalk, arriving in time for sunset and a cold gin and tonic by the fire.
Tents are made of heavy duty netting, encasing a deep bedroll, made up with fresh sheets, cosy blankets and soft pillows, so quite comfy.
There's a safari style bucket shower and a short-drop toilet which is located a modest distance away. The camp is lit by paraffin lamps and there are torches and a scout who keeps any curious creatures at a distance.
You'll eat well. A three course dinner and good breakfast is standard (unless you're planning to walk back to camp in time for breakfast).
One night is the norm, and it's essential to pre-book if your interested in fly camping.

Bird Watching, Game Drives, Game Viewing, Game Walks, Night Drives, Safaris, Sleep Outs, Walks (Guided)
Set out to explore Katavi with Nomad Tanzania's expert guides. Game drives typically run in the early morning from dawn until late morning, and in the afternoon from 3:30pm to sunset. Full day game drives are also available but preferably as part of a privately guided safari as most activities are on a shared basis. Private guide and vehicle available if pre-booked and there is a supplement to be paid. Night drives are also possible from Chada Katavi and must be pre-booked.
There's walking and then there's real walking; bush walking in a good pair of boots where you want to keep going on and on. Katavi makes you feel like this, it might be something to do with the endless plains around you and vast open skies. Not to mention what you might see whilst you're out there.
With your guide, and an armed scout, along for the ride, you could find yourself watching elephants from up close marveling at how, despite their size, they can move so quietly; or be meandering along the river line seeing all the different birds around the pools, and crocs and hippos who are a big feature of Katavi life. Animals who would often take flight at the sound of a vehicle, won't even know you're there and that's what makes walking out here such an incredible experience.
Walk out from camp to your flycamp where you will spend a night out under the stars. You'll sleep in a mosquito netted tent, small but with enough room for a bedroll kitted out with soft mattress, sheets and a feather pillow. Nomad don't scrimp on the dining either; you'll sit down to a three-course candlelit meal and a glass of chilled wine. But, these are only the peripheral things, the backdrop to the main event. The whole point about flycamping is being out there at night, lying on your back looking up at the night sky through the roof of your netted tent; listening to the animal sounds, so different from those you hear during the day. Under the careful guard of your guide and armed ranger you can drift off to the bush lullaby and just take it all in.
Without sounding too dramatic, it is hard to imagine your life not being changed in even the smallest of ways after something like this.
Greystoke, Mahale | Mahale National Park
There are few places left on earth that might rightfully be called Eden, and the Mahale Mountains, on the edge of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, is one of them. Life at Mahale is easy in this barefoot paradise. Greystoke Mahale sits on a pristine, white sandy beach overlooking the turquoise water of Lake Tanganyika, with the forested slopes of the 8000 ft Mahale Mountains rising behind.
The main mess is the only structure on the beach and it's the focal point of camp. Here is where you can look out over the lake to the mountains of the Congo in the haze beyond.
The National Park is famous for the chimpanzees that can be visited in the mountains; clients are allowed to spend 1 hour a day with the chimps. Depending on the season the chimps feed at different altitudes on the mountains, so at certain times of year the days can be quite long to reach the chimps. People come here to visit the chimpanzees, but by all means this is not the only activity you can do, the beautiful lake is great for exploring by Kayak, or following streams up into the hills to hidden waterfalls. The environment boasts excellent bird life and its well worth taking a walk with a guide through the network of jungle tracks. The lake is incredible for swimming as well as snorkelling.
Your days can start in the main area, eating breakfast whilst waiting to hear news of the chimps and deciding what to do. Evenings end with sundowners on the rocks of the headland, where drinks are served around the lamp-lit bar whilst the mountains, rising behind camp, disappear into the darkness.
THE BANDAS: All are open-fronted, with heavy canvas curtains you can pull across if you choose. Made of old dhow wood, not one is the same, but all have a dressing room behind and then a short boardwalk to the bathroom with flush toilet, strong showers and hot and cold water on demand. There's a "chill-out" deck upstairs, accessible by a rather clever canoe-ladder around the side of the banda. This is the place to while away a long afternoon with a glass of wine and a good book.
HIGHLIGHTS: The magical forest of the Mahale Mountains and the chimps! Along with many other animals that include other primates, bushbuck, bush pig, leopard and a multitude of butterflies and amazing birds. Dinner on the beach under the stars and sundowners on the dhow; kayaking and fishing in the clear waters of the lake. This lodge doesn't drip with luxury [not surprisingly considering its remote location] but is super stylish and an exceptional experience.

Greystoke thatched rooms
The eight A-frame bandas at Greystoke are entirely in-keeping with the setting. When Roland Purcell established his camp here, he was conscious of the responsibility of ensuring a light footprint. Built of thatch and salvaged dhow wood, each of the open-fronted rooms is tucked into the treeline, almost invisible to the passing fishermen in their small canoes. The rooms all have verandahs and an upstairs chill-out lounge with views across the white sand to the vastness of Lake Tanganyika.
The rooms are open-fronted with great canvas drapes which can be closed in the event of a storm. The twin or double beds nestle beneath a canopied net. A dressing area leads on to an en-suite bathroom. There's running water here, with showers on demand 24/7 and a flush loo. The rich foliage that gives the camp such character can be enjoyed while you are showering in privacy.

Nomad share the mountains and the lake with so many animals, but it's the chimps that inspire; it's hard not to compare their daily lives, their movements, feeding, squabbling, foraging and grooming, with our own. Time spent with them is time away from everything else that is ordinary. The Greystoke guides have watched, over the years, as families have grown, alpha males have come and gone, bonds and friendships have been created and then broken, and then created again. They are not so different from us.
After tracking them, for an hour or two, maybe more, only aware of the sounds they are making ahead of you, you find them; suddenly they are everywhere. You sit quietly on the forest floor and take a deep breath, this is what it's all about. For the next hour it's as if you scarcely breathe, so wrapped up are you in watching them go about their daily life. You become aware of the subtleties of different relationships, through gesture, sound and expression. One dictating the pace, another courting favour, yet another perhaps plotting a coup. There is humour too as the young chimps fall about the floor and play remarkably human games.
It's all acted out on this natural chimpanzee stage, and witnessing it is a true privilege.
Hike the forest paths looking for birds and butterflies, as well as the other shy mammals who quietly live there. Swim in ice-cold pools up in the mountain waterfalls, take a kayak out for a dawn paddle towards the middle of the lake; drink your morning coffee there and enjoy the sunrise coming up over the mountains.
Go for sundowners on the old wooden dhow, lazily following the shoreline and stopping to fish along the way, or just relax on the warm sands of the beach with a drink in hand.
