Situated on the Kwazulu Natal coast just 60 kilometers south of Durban, in the lazy town of Umkomaas which derives its name from the Umkomazi river.

All six rooms are en-suite with modern bathroom facilities. Rooms either have king size, queen or single beds to suit your requirements. Rooms are fitted with air conditioners, flat screen TVs, DSTV, Wifi, bar fridge, coffee and tea facilities and hairdryers. For extra security and comfort all doors and windows have secure shutters. All rooms have their own private patio area and entrance. Choice of breakfasts: Full English, Continental or Packed (for early birds going out).

Sodwana is ideally suited to provide visitors with a base from which they can experience African wildlife, sea life and birdlife without traveling vast distances.

Within a radius of 100kms are to be found the Hluhluwe, Mkuze and Tembe Elephant Park game reserves: numerous private game and hunting ranches, including Phinda resource reserve; St. Lucia, Lake Sibiya, South Africa’s largest natural freshwater lake, and the warm Aghulas current with its unique coral reefs.

Bayala Private Safari Lodges each offer 24 rooms, accommodating up to 48 guests in each lodge. Decor is refreshingly simple, appealing and serene. The rooms have en-suite bathrooms with large walk-in showers, and are equipped with air-conditioning, guest amenities, quality linens, hot beverage facilities and hairdryers.

Superior rooms are only available at Founders Lodge and offer a patio with views out to the bush but secured by fencing. These are subject to availability and offer the interleading option as a family room. The rate is higher for interleading superior rooms

We have 4 standard rooms nestled in between the rondawels. Upgraded and spacious and ready for your visit!

Founders Lodge has 6 rondawels that are part of the original accommodation back in the day. Although a standard room, they are spacious and unique to Zululand!

With a maximum number of 8 guests, our trained, armed rangers will take you on a 2 hour walk through the reserve.

Spotting and locating game in their natural environment without them knowing you are even there is the challenge. The rangers will show you the little things you don't normally see on a vehicle and it is very interesting to read the signs, once you begin to recognize them.

The stillness also allows you to hear the calls of the different bird species, which the rangers will point out.

The reserve is home to one of the largest privately owned rhino populations in the world.
The Mun-ya-wana conservation team has been at the forefront of rhino conservation ever since the crisis started, and a few years ago it was decided to initiate a dehorning program. The Cycle of Life has been able to contribute to this expensive program.

When the weather is chilly, we serve dinner inside the main lodge building. This is a cozy, open plan area where you can enjoy a night cap next to the fire place after dinner.

Safari Lodge offers an area where you can watch the sun set while you enjoy sundowners. Meals can be served both inside and outside. The bar lends itself to both inside and outside guests. Firebowls keep you nice and cozy on cool evenings.

For an extra cost, a bush dinner or bush breakfast can be arranged for your group. Subject to availability. Please arrange directly with reception on check in.
