Meno a Kwena | Boteti River - Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Meno a Kwena is located in an awesome location on the Boteti River overlooking the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park – a completely contrasting location, wildlife and habitat to the green and juicy Okavango Delta regions.

The canvas tented safari camp accommodates guests in 9 classic-style tents, these are perched on a 100-foot high clifftop overlooking the river and offering some of the best ‘armchair’ game viewing possible. You can enjoy the exciting wildlife activity that takes place at the river. Southern Africa’s largest zebra and wildebeest migration concentrates at the river during the dry season (May to November).

Each tent is classically-styled, with a few eccentricities thrown in here and there; think locally-woven fabrics mixed with colonial-style furniture, and simple fittings brightened by snippets of colour. All have fully-equipped en-suite bathrooms, and there are two family units, both with inter-leading tents (one with three beds for children, one with 2 beds), perfect for the kids.

The canvas lounge and dining tents are piled high with books and trinkets, and decorated with old-world artefacts, and the piece de resistance – a sculpted crocodile! And it’s not there for no reason – Meno a Kwena literally translates as “teeth of the crocodile.” Keep an eye on the river below from just about comfy chair in the living area, or plunge into the Flintstone-esque rocky swimming pool, and watch the animals doing the same below you.

Venture out on game drives in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, complete with bush picnics and chilled drinks. Enjoy cultural safaris and walks with the ancient Bushmen. Cruise along the Boteti River by boat (water levels permitting) Sleep-out under the stars in the heart of the Makgadikgadi Pans. View the wildlife at the river at eye-level from the floating game-viewing hide. There is so much to do at Meno a Kwena. (ITT)

Sable Alley | Khwai Private Reserve

Sable Alley is located on the banks of a lily-covered lagoon, home to hippo and a favourite drinking spot for elephant and buffalo, the big game often come close to camp.

Each canvas-walled suite is huge 55 square metres, and comes complete with mini-indoor seating area, writing desk, double bed, and Afro-chic décor. Slide open the screen doors at the front for uninterrupted views of the lagoon, or take a seat on the veranda for a closer inspection. At the back, you’ll find two basins, and indoor shower and a flush loo. And if you fancy washing off the dust from the day in the great outdoors, no problem – there’s an outdoor shower with a view too.

Just like the bedrooms, the communal areas are designed around the spectacular vistas. Watch the happenings at the lagoon from the bar, from the outdoor fire pit, or from a squashy sofa in the lounge. At night, dinner is served either in the indoor dining area, or alfresco on the deck, accompanied by twinkling stars and the rumblings and grumblings of the wildlife. There’s a swimming pool and sun deck, both unique spots from which to watch the hippo pods emerge from the lagoon, or simply for some chill-out time in the heat of the day.

Join morning, afternoon and evening game drives in the diverse landscapes of the 200,000 hectare Khwai Private Reserve. Pole through the tranquil waterways on a mokoro (dugout canoe) excursion or boat trip and marvel at the beauty of the area from a different perspective (water levels permitting). This area will offer an unforgettable African safari experience. (ITT)
