“Mzima,” meaning alive in Kiswahili, is a peaceful oasis at the heart of red-dusty Tsavo and this magical place is not to be missed. The pure water of the three Mzima pools filtered by the porous sponge-like soil of the Chyulu and the Shetani lava flow brings life to a unique ecosystem at only 40 kilometres away from the Chyulu Hills. With a daily supply of more than 250 million litres of fresh water, the pool provides an oasis of green. It’s a haven for fishes, birds, monkeys, crocodiles and hippos. The main attractions are the two nature trails leading to an underwater viewing tank built to allow visitors to watch hippos!
Once climbed, the Roaring Rocks will give you magnificent panoramic views, usually only seen by the eagles and buzzards that fly around these cliffs. Over the plain called Rhino Valley and the Ngulia, the Roaring Rocks, located near the Rhino Sanctuary, has long been an observation point for the protection of black rhinoceros and the fight against poaching. The eerie Roaring Rocks are named after the buzz of cicadas that inhabit them and the howl of wind that hits the bare rocks.
A black lava flow of eight kilometres, 1.6 kilometres wide and five meters deep, is the remains of volcanic eruptions. They were subject of tales among local communities who named the flow "shetani," meaning evil in Kiswahili, after it spewed from the earth when it was just 240 years old. Climbing the flow isn’t an easy task as the thick, black soil is composed of uneven chunks of solid magma.
Experience the daily drama that unfolds in the Kenyan Savannah!
Tsavo National Park consists of a diverse ecosystem where numerous species of wildlife are spotted on any game drive. From the tenacious elephant herds to buffalos and the big cats, a game drive in Tsavo is a must-have experience! Both night and daytime game drives are possible to give guests the opportunity to view both diurnal and nocturnal animals.
The watering hole is located adjacent to the main building, where you can wine and dine while taking in the great view of the green Chyulu Hills and watching a spectacular wide range of wildlife stop by to quench their thirst.
The ‘sun-downer’ is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920s when elegant cocktails were always served while watching the spectacle of the African sunset. Timed to begin as the sun starts its descent, the Sundowner opens with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at the site just as the evening sky turns a gold-pink.
The central dining room and the alfresco rock-built bar at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge were beautifully designed and decorated in the local style to offer an unforgettable dining experience. The dining room features a stone terrace overlooking the wildlife-filled water hole and the bar offers comfortable day beds with majestic views of the rolling Chyulu Hills.
Each dish is crafted from the finest meats, dairy products, fruits and vegetables sourced from the communities bordering Tsavo Park. Breakfast is complimentary to all hotel guests. In typical safari-style, we offer a ‘full English breakfast' as well as European options. Breakfast and lunch are presented in buffet-style and feature a wide range of international choices encompassing meat, poultry, fish and vegetarian selections.
Our table d'hôte dinner menus feature a salad buffet, soup, entrée, pudding, cheese and biscuits and tea or coffee. Guests may also enjoy theme nights with specialties ranging from pasta and Mongolian-style stir-fry, BBQ and spiced roast to Kenyan favourites like “Nyama Choma” (traditionally roasted meats), “Sukuma” (local kale cooked with tomatoes, onions, garlic and coriander), “Posho” (maize) and other local delicacies.
Kindly note that our restaurant caters to any special dietary requirements our guests may have.
A vast embankment of volcanic rock, which rises from the plains and offers unique views, Lion Rock is so-called because it used to be a favourite lion haunt, including the famous man-eating lions of Tsavo. Today, the rock is used exclusively by the Lodge as a breakfast spot. Setting off early from the lodge, guests can enjoy a gentle game drive en route to the rock, arriving to find that a full English breakfast has been laid out for them on its summit. (Simple bathroom facilities are provided.)
Dine in the wild and taste safari life at its best, accompanied by a group of scarlet-clad Maasai morans (warriors) or Akamba drummers. Located in a grove of acacia trees immediately adjacent to the lodge, your lantern-lit dinner begins with cocktails around the campfire. Dinner will then be cooked on a blazing BBQ, accompanied by a wide range of salads and vegetables. While dessert and coffee are served, our cultural entertainers will provide you with songs, chants and dance displays.

Amboseli Serena has taken a leading role in environmental protection and preservation with a comprehensive action programme, the Re-forestation Programme. This conservation scheme encourages guests at the Lodge to participate and plant “their” own trees. All the trees planted are indigenous species that consist of specifically drought resistant species such as Acacia spp., Mellia, Croton and Commiphora.

There's nothing quite as quintessentially "Safari" as a traditional bush dinner, especially when enlivened by the presence of scarlet-clad Maasai morans (warriors). Located in a grove of acacia trees adjacent to the lodge, your lantern-lit evening begins with cocktails around the campfire. A six-course dinner will then be prepared on a blazing BBQ, accompanied by a wide variety of salads and vegetables. As dessert and coffee are served, the Maasai will entertain you with songs, chants, and dance displays. Dine in the wild and experience the essence of safari life at its finest.
Few dining experiences are more memorable or as typically Kenyan as breakfast in the bush. Setting off after an early morning cup of tea, you can enjoy a fascinating game drive into the bush where, at one of our specially chosen breakfast sites, a full English breakfast will be cooked before you. Enjoy a glass of chilled ‘buck's fizz' while you savour the experience.
Timed to commence as the sun starts its descent, the Amboseli Serena Sundowner begins with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at Observation Hill just as the evening sky turns golden-pink. Safari chairs will be set up looking towards the mountain. There will also be a full bar service and cocktail snacks. Musical entertainment can also be provided. As night falls, you will be driven back to the lodge in time for dinner, passing the swamps at the ideal time to spot hippos out of the water.
This activity can also be enjoyed within the lodge's grounds.
